Prevalence and significance of family history of kidney disease in the electronic health record in three United States health systems.

INTRODUCTION: Family history is a key predictor of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and kidney failure, yet its documentation in electronic health records (EHRs) remains poorly characterized. Here, we examined the prevalence of kidney-related family history across three large United States. health systems and assessed associations with kidney disease outcomes. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 1,130,961 adults (age 18-80) receiving primary care at Geisinger, New York University Langone Health, and University of Utah Health from 2020-2023. Family history of CKD and kidney failure wa

Expanding Contracting Authorities Across the Department of Health and Human Services Family of Agencies to Address Critical Public Health Needs.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Increasing Community Access to Testing (ICATT) program rapidly expanded no-cost COVID-19 testing through commercial pharmacies in 2021, prioritizing rural and high Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) communities. Using public health emergency (PHE) authorities and Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) waivers, ICATT achieved its initial goal of 10,000 sites. However, a subsequent shift to FAR-based competitive contracting without waivers limited participation by key retail vendors, leading to the discontinuation of over 1,700 testing sites and cons

Translating policy into health outcomes: a mixed-methods health impact assessment of the family physician program in Bonab County, Iran.

BACKGROUND: The Family Physician Program (FPP) represents a crucial reform in the primary healthcare system. Assessing its impact is essential to inform evidence-based policy decisions and to enhance its effectiveness in improving population health. This study employed a Health Impact Assessment (HIA) framework to evaluate the influence of the FPP on key health outcomes in Iran and to generate actionable recommendations for optimizing its implementation. METHOD: A retrospective HIA using the Merseyside guidelines was conducted with a concurrent mixed-methods design across three phases. Phase

Family violence and mental health in a sample of Finnish health care professionals: the mediating role of perceived sleep quality.

BACKGROUND: Family violence (FV) is a prevalent health issue around the world and health care services have an important role in both recognizing and treating the consequences of violence. However, FV experiences among health care professionals themselves have not been investigated much. We also lack specific knowledge on the associations between FV and mental health. AIM: The purpose of the study was to investigate the prevalence and effects of FV in a sample of Finnish health care professionals. In addition to analysing direct connections between different types of FV and mental health, the

Effectiveness of family-provider communication interventions on family's psychological health, communication quality, and health care utilization in the ICU: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

OBJECTIVE: This review aims to assess evidence regarding the effectiveness of family-provider communication interventions. METHODS: We searched six databases (PubMed, PsycINFO, Web of Science, EMBASE, CINAHL and the Cochrane Library). Two researchers independently extracted data and assessed bias. Data were analyzed using Stata software and Review Manager. RESULTS: Nineteen studies were included. Communication interventions had a moderate effect on family needs (SMD = -0.43, 95 % CI: -0.81 to -0.06, P = 0.025), small effects on 6-month psychological distress (Overall: SMD = -0.14, 95 % CI: -

Health Without Barriers: Community-Engaged Adaptation of a Whole Family-Inclusive Intensive Health Behavior and Lifestyle Program in Rural Colorado.

Risk factors for type 2 diabetes (T2D) and cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are increasingly apparent in adolescence, and those in rural communities are disproportionately impacted. Intensive health behavior and lifestyle treatment (IHBLT) interventions have been shown to reduce risk factors for T2D and CVD; yet, for adolescents living in rural communities, these types of interventions are difficult to access and may be less effective due to unique barriers faced by rural adolescents. Tailoring IHBLT to the local rural context, particularly in ways that consider current and historical structural

Digital Inclusion and Women's Health Indicators Across Indian States: An Ecological Analysis of National Family Health Survey 2019-2021 Data.

BACKGROUND: Digital inclusion may influence how women access health information and health services, but state-level evidence linking women's digital inclusion with women's health indicators in India remains limited. This study examined ecological associations between women's internet use, women's own mobile phone use, and selected women's health indicators across Indian states and union territories. METHODS: This ecological cross-sectional secondary analysis used an uploaded aggregated National Family Health Survey 2019-2021 (NFHS-5) state-level dataset. The India aggregate was excluded, lea

Digital Health Engagement Behaviors in US Family Caregivers: Trend Analysis Using the Health Information National Trends Survey 2019-2022 Data.

BACKGROUND: Digital health has provided caregivers with access to supportive resources without space-time restrictions. Caregivers' digital health engagement behaviors can help them track their own health and that of care recipients as well as communicate with others. While digital health tools have become more prevalent since the COVID-19 pandemic, the trend in caregiver engagement has been less explored. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the trends and factors associated with selected digital health engagement behaviors in family caregivers in the United States, using the HINTS (Health Informa

Receiving support for mental health problems from family and friends: Measurement and impact on mental health, relationships, and help-seeking.

Mental health-related discrimination by friends, family members and intimate partners is especially common, particularly in the form of avoidance and dismissive reactions. In contrast, good quality initial support (mental health first aid) is thought to improve help-seeking and mental health outcomes, although there are few studies that have examined this. This study aimed to develop a measure of mental health support skills that could be self-reported by the recipient of help, and to use this measure to test whether better quality support was related to better outcomes. We recruited 1116 adul

[Domestic violence against children and prospects for intervention of the Family Health Program: the experience of the Family Doctor Program/Niterói (RJ, Brazil)].

This study seeks to estimate the prevalence of psychological and physical violence practiced against children in the family environment among clients of the Family Medical Program in Niterói (RJ). It also discloses some potential opportunities for action in the prevention, early detection and monitoring of families experiencing violence. This population-based survey was conducted with face-to-face interviews with parents or legal sponsors of 278 children registered in 27 teams of the Family Health Program. The population studied was randomly selected among children up to ten years of age. The

Working memory and decision-making biases in young adults with a family history of alcoholism: studies from the Oklahoma family health patterns project.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol misuse is more common in persons with a family history of alcoholism (FH+) than in those with no such history (FH-). Among FH+, behavioral disinhibition and male sex seem to signal the presence of an increased risk. METHODS: This study examined cognitive and behavioral characteristics of 175 nonabusing 18- to 30-year-olds, 87 FH+ and 88 FH-, who were further characterized by their degree of behavioral disinhibition using the Sociability scale of the California Personality Inventory. Working memory and decision making were tested using the Stroop Color-Word Test and the Iow

Associations between integrated family planning, maternal and newborn health, and immunization services and adoption of postpartum family planning and immunization services in Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Over the past 30 years, Ethiopia has significantly invested in its primary health care (PHC) system, improving access to health services and overall health outcomes. However, gaps persist in delivering comprehensive reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child health (RMNCH) services. Although Ethiopia's policy framework supports integrated PHC services, RMNCH programs often operate independently, resulting in fragmented care and missed opportunities, especially in rural and pastoral regions with limited access. This study examined current practices in integrated service delivery and

Defining the phenotype of young adults with family histories of alcohol and other substance use disorders: Studies from the family health patterns project.

Individuals with a family history of alcohol and other drug use disorders (FH+) are at increased risk for developing substance use disorders themselves relative to those with no such histories (FH-). Here we sought to identify key characteristics associated with FH+ status and alcohol and other drug use disorder status in a large cohort of FH+ and FH- young adults. We conducted principal component analyses on demographic, temperament, and cognitive measures differentiating 506 FH+ and 528 FH- young adults. Three principal components were identified, and these component scores were then used to

Bullying Victimisation and Mental Health: The Mediating Role of Peer and Family Social Support.

INTRODUCTION: Adverse childhood experiences have been consistently linked to a range of mental health related difficulties in adulthood. One such experience is bullying, which has been shown to predict psychotic symptoms. This study aimed to explore whether bullying victimisation in early adolescence is associated with certain mental health outcomes (psychosis, depression and cannabis abuse) and whether this is mediated by the individuals' perception of social support from peers and family. METHODS: This study performed secondary data analysis of a prospective cohort study, the Belfast Youth

Parental depressive symptoms link family income to preschool child mental health in Western China.

BACKGROUND: Child mental health represents a global public health priority. However, evidence regarding the association between family income and mental health among preschool children in Western China remains limited, and the potential indirect role of parental depressive symptoms has not been fully examined. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 21,366 preschool children (aged 3-6 years) and their parents in Western China. Family income was classified into low, middle, and high groups. Child mental health outcomes (total difficulties and prosocial behavior) were assessed using the St

Diversity, equity, and inclusion considerations for anti-racist, equity-focused NICU family mental health.

Families with infants hospitalized in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) experience high rates of perinatal mental health conditions, which are disproportionately experienced by families i) of minoritized racial identities; ii) with a primary language other than English (PLOE); and iii) of low socioeconomic status. Disparities in screening, diagnosis, and treatment for mental health conditions are complex. Multiple individual, interpersonal, institutional, and structural factors may negatively impact marginalized individuals. Multifaceted recommendations to address these challenges are in

Kinlessness, sole family survivorship, and the mental and physical health of U.S. older adults.

Limited family ties are increasingly common among U.S. older adults. Kinless individuals lack a family of procreation, namely a spouse/partner and children. Sole family survivorship refers to lacking family of origin kin, including parents and siblings. Familial ties are linked to health across the life course and, in line with socioemotional selectivity theory, play an increasingly salient role with age. Consequently, older adults who are kinless or sole family survivors may face worse health outcomes than their counterparts with kin. However, substitution of friends or relatives nearby may m
