[CONTRIBUTION TO THE UNDERSTANDING OF THE HEALTH SITUATION WITHIN THE POPULATION IN SLAVONIA AND SRIJEM DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR WITH AN EMPHASIS ON INFECTIOUS DISEASES].

During World War II, the population of agricultural areas of Slavonia and Srijem lived in privation, but there was no famine. A more serious threat was infectious diseases, such as malaria, typhoid fever, and dysentery, which were also present within the population in the post-war period. Major epidemics broke out mostly in areas under partisan control, especially in the areas of western and central Slavonia, where major epidemic typhus contagious broke out. Venereal diseases, less common in the Slavonian area before the war, were also on the rise. Two factors had an impact on the health situa

Factors affecting food security and poverty analysis among rural households in the North-Eastern Highlands of Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Ethiopia frequently experiences food insecurity due to recurrent droughts, food shortages, and famine. Understanding the determinants of food security and the extent of poverty is crucial for effective intervention. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to identify key factors influencing food security and analyze poverty levels among rural households in the North-Eastern Highlands of Ethiopia. METHODS: A mixed-methods research design was employed, utilizing both probability and non-probability sampling techniques to select 382 households, focus group discussants, and key informants. Quan

Molecular Epidemiologic and Geo-Spatial Characterization of Staphylococcus aureus Cultured from Skin and Soft Tissue Infections from United States-Born and Immigrant Patients Living in New York City.

(1) Background: With increasing international travel and mass population displacement due to war, famine, climate change, and immigration, pathogens, such as Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), can also spread across borders. Methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) most commonly causes skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs), as well as more invasive infections. One clonal strain, S. aureus USA300, originating in the United States, has spread worldwide. We hypothesized that S. aureus USA300 would still be the leading clonal strain among US-born compared to non-US-born residents, even though risk

Prenatal factors contribute to the emergence of kwashiorkor or marasmus in severe undernutrition: evidence for the predictive adaptation model.

BACKGROUND: Severe acute malnutrition in childhood manifests as oedematous (kwashiorkor, marasmic kwashiorkor) and non-oedematous (marasmus) syndromes with very different prognoses. Kwashiorkor differs from marasmus in the patterns of protein, amino acid and lipid metabolism when patients are acutely ill as well as after rehabilitation to ideal weight for height. Metabolic patterns among marasmic patients define them as metabolically thrifty, while kwashiorkor patients function as metabolically profligate. Such differences might underlie syndromic presentation and prognosis. However, no fundam

Is Anorexia Truly a Contemporary Disease?

BACKGROUND: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is reported to be on the rise. However, instances of fasting have been noted since antiquity. Can modern diagnoses be applied to circumstances very different from our own? Is there a continuum of symptoms whose meanings have evolved over centuries, or is AN a recent development? SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A literature review was conducted. Twelve articles were found to be pertinent to the study, including several by Jacques Maître, who also published a book on the subject that was utilized. RESULTS: Few instances of fasting and no deaths from AN are reported in W

Evolutionary psychiatry: foundations, progress and challenges.

Evolutionary biology provides a crucial foundation for medicine and behavioral science that has been missing from psychiatry. Its absence helps to explain slow progress; its advent promises major advances. Instead of offering a new kind of treatment, evolutionary psychiatry provides a scientific foundation useful for all kinds of treatment. It expands the search for causes from mechanistic explanations for disease in some individuals to evolutionary explanations for traits that make all members of a species vulnerable to disease. For instance, capacities for symptoms such as pain, cough, anxie

Escherichia coli Leucine-Responsive Regulatory Protein Bridges DNA In Vivo and Tunably Dissociates in the Presence of Exogenous Leucine.

Feast-famine response proteins are a widely conserved class of global regulators in prokaryotes, the most highly studied of which is the Escherichia coli leucine-responsive regulatory protein (Lrp). Lrp senses the environmental nutrition status and subsequently regulates up to one-third of the genes in E. coli, either directly or indirectly. Lrp exists predominantly as octamers and hexadecamers (16mers), where leucine is believed to shift the equilibrium toward the octameric state. In this study, we analyzed the effects of three oligomerization state mutants of Lrp in terms of their ability to

Seasonality and predictors of childhood stunting and wasting in drought-prone areas in Ethiopia: a cohort study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Over centuries, Ethiopia has experienced severe famines and periods of serious drought, and malnutrition remains a major public health problem. The aims of this study were to estimate seasonal variations in child stunting and wasting, and identify factors associated with both forms of child malnutrition in drought-prone areas. METHODS: This cohort study was conducted among a random sample of 909 children in rural southern Ethiopia. The same children were followed for 1 year (2017-2018) with quarterly repeated measurements of their outcomes: height-for-age and weight

Living through the war in Gaza: An autoethnographic account of psychological, humanitarian, and physical suffering of Gaza's inhabitants during the war in Gaza.

INTRODUCTION: This paper presents an autoethnography from a Gaza-based scholar who documents, in real time, the war's effects on himself and his family. It situates a personal trajectory-bombardments, repeated displacement, injury, bereavement, and the collapse of essential services-within the broader humanitarian emergency, arguing that first-person evidence is indispensable to grasp lived experience and cumulative harm. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using an autoethnographic case-study design, the author combines contemporaneous field notes, direct observations across hospitals and shelters, and f

Hyperemesis gravidarum and risk of cancer in offspring, a Scandinavian registry-based nested case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Hyperemesis gravidarum is a serious condition affecting 0.8-2.3% of pregnant women and can be regarded as a restricted period of famine. Research concerning potential long-term consequences of the condition for the offspring, is limited, but lack of nutrition in-utero has been associated with chronic disease in adulthood, including some cancers. There is growing evidence that several forms of cancer may originate during fetal life. We conducted a large study linking the high-quality population-based medical birth- and cancer registries in Norway, Sweden and Denmark, to explore whet

Fertility decline driven by poverty: the case of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Demographic transition theory states that fertility declines in response to development, thus wealth and fertility are negatively correlated. Evolutionary theory, however, suggests a positive relationship between wealth and fertility. Fertility transition as a result of industrialization and economic development started in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in Western Europe; and it extended to some of the Asian and Latin American countries later on. However, economic crises since the 1980s have been co-incident with fertility decline in sub-Sahara Africa and other developing countries lik

Lifestyle risk factors for oral cancer.

The "style of life is the unique way in which individuals try to realize their fictional final goal and meet or avoid the three main tasks of life: work, community, love" (Alfred Adler, founder of the Individual Psychology). Lifestyle refers to the way individuals live their lives and how they handle problems and interpersonal relations. The lifestyle behaviours associated to oral cancer with convincing evidence are tobacco use, betel quid chewing, alcohol drinking, low fruit and vegetable consumption (the detrimental lifestyle is high fat and/or sugar intake, resulting in low fruit and/or veg

A role for suppressed skeletal muscle thermogenesis in pathways from weight fluctuations to the insulin resistance syndrome.

An impressive body of epidemiological evidence suggests that a history of large perturbations in body weight earlier in life, independently of excess weight, is a risk factor for later development of insulin-related complications, namely central obesity, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Such an increased risk has been reported in men and women who in young adulthood experienced weight fluctuations that involved weight recovery after weight loss caused by disease, famine or voluntary 'yoyo' dieting, and is particularly strong when the weight fluctuations occurred much earlier in life

The indirect association of lactation with subsequent perimenopausal body weight.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to estimate the relationship of prior breastfeeding to perimenopausal body mass index (BMI) (kg/m2). While most long-term studies of women's body weight after reproductive experience have found a negative relationship between lactation and body weight, most short-term studies found either no impact of lactation on body weight, or decelerated postpartum weight loss among breastfeeding women. DESIGN: We performed a retrospective cohort study. SETTING: The study was done in The Netherlands between 1987 and 1990. SUBJECTS: The 1067 singleton females who were born around the

Pancreatic exocrine function and morphology following prior malnutrition in Asian and African cohorts: a multi-cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Studies of survivors of large 20th-century famines suggest persistent after effects on metabolism and nutrient handling, including abnormal endocrine and exocrine pancreatic functions, which play key roles in nutrient digestion and absorption. OBJECTIVES: We tested the hypothesis that severe wasting malnutrition in childhood or adulthood leads to long-term exocrine pancreatic insufficiency and/or structural abnormalities. METHODS: We followed up participants from 6 cohorts of previously malnourished (PM) and not previously malnourished (NPM) adults and children in India, the Phil

Neoplasia in the dromedary camel: a review (Camelus dromedarius).

BACKGROUND: Dromedary camels are a source of milk, meat, wool, and income in poor societies and play an important role in social events. Tumors have devastating effects on the health, production, reproduction, and marketing value of dromedaries. Reviews on neoplasia in dromedaries are scarce, making it pertinent to present this comprehensive study. AIM: This review provides insights into the epidemiology, pathology, future diagnosis, and treatment of camel tumors. METHODS: The literature on tumors in dromedaries is reviewed with a focus on tumor types in different body systems, epidemiology,

Impact of food insecurity and malnutrition on the burden of Non-communicable diseases and death in Ethiopia: A situational analysis.

BACKGROUND: Currently, Ethiopia is undergoing an epidemiological transition. Consequently, NCDs are becoming an increasingly important public health problem in the country. Furthermore, the country has faced a high level of food insecurity. METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive review based on published articles from 2010 to 2018 and WHO reports on food insecurity, malnutrition and their impacts on the burden of NCDs death in order to obtain a deeper understanding of the seriousness of the NCDs cause of deaths in relation to food insecurity and malnutrition. In addition, policy for protecting

The environment and susceptibility to schizophrenia.

In the present article the putative role of environmental factors in schizophrenia is reviewed and synthesized. Accumulating evidence from recent studies suggests that environmental exposures may play a more significant role in the etiopathogenesis of this disorder than previously thought. This expanding knowledge base is largely a consequence of refinements in the methodology of epidemiologic studies, including birth cohort investigations, and in preclinical research that has been inspired by the evolving literature on animal models of environmental exposures. This paper is divided into four

Demographic and Clinical Characteristics of Migrant Patients Visiting the Emergency Department.

Introduction Disasters, war, violence, and famine have driven people to migrate in search of a better life, resulting in an increasing number of health issues related to migration. Turkiye has historically been a host country for migration due to its geopolitical location for economic and educational reasons, among other reasons. Migrants frequently visit emergency departments (EDs) regarding their chronic or acute diseases. Understanding the characteristics and admission diagnosis in EDs can help healthcare providers identify areas that require attention. This study aimed to determine the dem
