Identification of a tissue-non-specific homologue of axonal fasciculation and elongation protein zeta-1.

Fasciculation and elongation protein zeta-1 (FEZ1) is a mammalian orthologue of the Caenorhabditis elegans UNC-76 protein involved in the axonal outgrowth and fasciculation and promotes neurite extension of PC12 cells through interaction with protein kinase C zeta (PKCzeta). The gene coding for FEZ2, a homologue of FEZ1, has also been reported in rat and human. In this study, we compared mRNA expression of FEZ1 and FEZ2 in adult rat tissues and mouse embryos by Northern blot and in situ hybridization analyses. In contrast to FEZ1 whose mRNA is expressed almost exclusively in rat brain and temp

Axon fasciculation and differences in midline kinetics between pioneer and follower axons within commissural fascicles.

Early neuronal scaffold development studies suggest that initial neurons and their axons serve as guides for later neurons and their processes. Although this arrangement might aid axon navigation, the specific consequence(s) of such interactions are unknown in vivo. We follow forebrain commissure formation in living zebrafish embryos using timelapse fluorescence microscopy to examine quantitatively commissural axon kinetics at the midline: a place where axon interactions might be important. Although it is commonly accepted that commissural axons slow down at the midline, our data show this is

ON direction-selective ganglion cells in the rabbit retina: dendritic morphology and pattern of fasciculation.

ON direction-selective (DS) ganglion cells were identified by electrophysiological recordings in DAPI labeled, isolated rabbit retinas. Their responses to a flashing spot were sustained. Their responses to moving stimuli were strong in the preferred direction and weak in the null direction. Injection of the recorded cells with Lucifer yellow revealed that the cells had a distinct dendritic morphology, consistent with that described previously (Buhl & Peichl, 1986; Amthor et al., 1989; Famiglietti, 1992a). When neighboring cells were injected, an extensive dendritic co-fasciculation was observe

Vicia villosa agglutinin inhibits the fasciculation of vomeronasal axons in fetal rat vomeronasal organ culture.

The vomeronasal organ of rat was cultured from embryonic 15-day littermates. During 4-8 days in vitro, vomeronasal axons originating from the explants of vomeronasal organ formed 2-3 large fascicles. When Vicia villosa agglutinin (VVA) was added to the culture medium, fasciculation of the vomeronasal axons was inhibited. The timing of addition and the duration of the presence of VVA were related to the inhibition of fasciculation of vomeronasal axons. Glycocojugates that bind with the VVA may therefore play an important role in the fasciculation of developing vomeronasal axons.

Pathfinding by neuronal growth cones in grasshopper embryos. II. Selective fasciculation onto specific axonal pathways.

In the previous paper (Raper, J.A., M. Bastiani, and C.S. Goodman (1983) J. Neurosci. 3:20-30) we showed that the growth cones of two sibling neurons, the G and C cells, follow the same route in the developing grasshopper neuropil until they reach a stereotypic choice point. Here their growth cones diverge from each other as G turns and extends anteriorly and C turns and extends posteriorly. In this paper we show that the G and C growth cones fasciculate and extend in opposite directions upon a specific bundle of four axons. This occurs even though many other axons are within filopodial reach

Effect of competitive myoneural blockade and fentanyl on muscle fasciculation caused by suxamethonium in children.

The effects of tubocurarine 0.06 mg kg-1, alcuronium 0.03 mg kg-1, pancuronium 0.01 mg kg-1, and fentanyl 1 or 2 micrograms kg-1 on the muscle fasciculations associated with suxamethonium were studied in 171 children undergoing otolaryngological surgery. The mean fasciculation index in all pretreatment groups was significantly smaller than in the control group. The most effective pretreatment was fentanyl 2 micrograms kg-1 followed, in order, by alcuronium, fentanyl 1 microgram kg-1, tubocurarine and pancuronium. The rate of the onset of the fasciculations after the injection of suxamethonium

Fenitrothion (Sumithion) Poisoning-Related Fasciculations Successfully Managed With Levetiracetam: A Case Report.

Fenitrothion is one of the most globally used organophosphorus pesticides, which can cause neurological symptoms, including involuntary movements. However, due to the limited number of case report, information on its treatment is also scarce. Here we presented a 74-year-old Japanese woman who was admitted to our hospital due to a persistent nausea and vomiting after ingesting 200 mL of 50% fenitrothion for a suicidal attempt. She received continuous intravenous infusion of atropine and 2-pyridine aldoxime methiodide under mechanical ventilation and continuous hemodiafiltration. However, she de

A simple and inexpensive laser dissection of fasciculated axons from motor nerve organoids.

Motor nerve organoids could be generated by culturing a spheroid of motor neurons differentiated from human induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells within a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) chip which guides direction and fasciculation of axons extended from the spheroid. To isolate axon bundles from motor nerve organoids, we developed a rapid laser dissection method based on localized photothermal combustion. By illuminating a blue laser on a black mark on the culture device using a dry-erase marker, we induced highly localized heating near the axon bundles. Moving the laser enabled spatial control o

Lingual Fasciculation as a Point of Call for the Diagnosis of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis: A Literature Review.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Dental surgeons often play a pivotal role in the initial detection of lingual fasciculations (LFs). These involuntary micro-movements of the tongue can serve as early clinical indicators of neurodegenerative diseases, with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) being the most concerning. Therefore, it is imperative to educate dental surgeons on identifying LF and understanding the potential underlying pathologies. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to pinpoint the pathologies in which LFs could emerge as an early clinical marker. Our review focused on articles delineating patient p

Identification of muscle fasciculations from surface EMG: comparison with ultrasound-based detection.

The clinical standard for the identification of muscle fasciculations is needle electromyography. However, both surface electromyograms (sEMG) and ultrasound imaging (US) have been recently proposed as alternative and more sensitive approaches. The aims of this study were to: (i) compare the sensitivity to muscle fasciculations of sEMG and US, (ii) assess the rate of agreement (RoA) between the two approaches, and (iii) investigate how much sensitivity and RoA are affected by the selectivity of sEMG detection. Surface EMGs were collected concurrently with US images using an array of 32 electro

Surface electromyogram and muscle ultrasonography for detection of muscle fasciculations in pediatric peripheral neuropathy.

A 12-year-old girl presented with talipes equinus of both legs, attenuation of upper and lower limb tendon reflexes, thermal hyperalgesia, and reduction of vibratory sensation. On clinical examination, muscle twitches of fingers of both hands, as well as the abductor halluces and the dorsal interossei muscles of the right foot were observed. Nerve conduction velocity was significantly declined in the upper and lower extremities. Needle electromyography (EMG) was not performed; however, ultrasonography revealed repetitive, semi-regular muscle twitches lasting 0.2-0.4s, concomitant with muscle d

Detecting fasciculations in cranial nerve innervated muscles with ultrasound in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

INTRODUCTION: Cranial muscle fasciculations may be difficult to detect in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Ultrasound (US) detection of fasciculations in these muscles may have clinical utility. METHODS: Patients with suspected ALS were prospectively enrolled. Nerve conduction studies, needle electromyography (EMG), and US examination of cranial muscles were performed. Controls were examined by US only. Fasciculations were counted and scored for each muscle after 10 or 30 seconds. RESULTS: There were 84 patients with ALS. Fasciculations were most frequently found in the genioglossus musc

Lewis-Sumner Syndrome Manifesting as Unilateral Vocal Fold Paresis and Laryngeal Fasciculations.

Lewis-Sumner syndrome (LSS) is a rare disease characterized by asymmetrical and multifocal mononeuropathy commonly located in the upper limbs. Some rare cases affecting cranial nerve have been described, but LSS is unknown to affect especially laryngeal nerves. This paper presents the first case of unilateral vocal fold paresis caused by an LSS in a 59-year-old man complaining of dysphonia, breathy voice, and vocal fatigue. Epidemiology, clinical features, diagnosis, and treatment will be described.

[Use of atracurium for the prevention of fasciculations and succinylcholine myalgia in athletes undergoing orthopedic surgery].

The Authors report their clinical experience about the use of atracurium besylate in preventing succinylcholine-induced fasciculations and postoperative myalgias in fifty athletes (ASA class 1), submitted to arthroscopic meniscectomy. The patients were pretreated with atracurium 5 mg i.v. or saline solution in a double-blind fashion. After 2.5 minutes, succinylcholine 1.3 mg/kg was administered, and fasciculations were recorded on a scale ranging from 0 to 3. Twenty-four hours after surgery all subjects were questioned about myalgias occurrence, scored by a 0-3 scale. Fasciculations occurred i
