Predicting Shoulder Force to Prevent Injury: Body Fat Mass Increases Shoulder Stress among Pitchers.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between whole body and throwing arm composition and length with throwing shoulder distraction and anterior force. Literature shows a relationship between shoulder force and pain; therefore, as well as between body mass and pain, it was hypothesized that pitchers with greater body fat mass would display increased throwing shoulder force during the acceleration phase of the softball pitch. METHODS: Thirty-eight high school softball pitchers from southern United States agreed to participate (1.69 ± 0.07 m, 74.71 ± 16.36 kg, 15.2

Body fat change and 8-year incidence of hypertension: Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study.

Hypertension is strongly correlated with an increased risk of cardiovascular events. Recent studies have demonstrated that body fat percentage (BF%) is associated with cardiometabolic risk factors. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between a change in BF% and body mass index (BMI) and the incidence of new-onset hypertension in a normotensive Korean cohort. At baseline (2001-2002), 8848 participants aged 40-70 years were recruited for the study; follow-up surveys were completed in the year 2012. A total of 3902 adults (1866 men and 2036 women) were included in the final a

Plasma steroids, body composition, and fat distribution: effects of age, sex, and exercise training.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Plasma steroid hormone levels vary between men and women, but their associations with BMI and adiposity are controversial. Furthermore, little is known about the role of exercise programs on the relationship between steroid hormones and adiposity. This report evaluates these relationships for plasma levels of adrenal, gonadal, and conjugated steroids with body composition and fat distribution in sedentary men and women, aged 17-65 years, and their responses to an exercise program. SUBJECTS/METHODS: In the sedentary state, 270 men (29% Blacks) and 304 women (34% Blacks)

Examining the Associations among Fibrocystic Breast Change, Total Lean Mass, and Percent Body Fat.

Fibrocystic breast change (FBC) is extremely common and occurrs in 90% of women during their lives. The association between body composition and risk of breast cancer is well established. We hypothesized that the effect might exist during the development of FBC. Our aim was to examine the relationships of total lean mass (TLM) and percent body fat (PBF) with FBC in a general female population. In total, 8477 female subjects aged 20 years or older were enrolled in the study at the Tri-Service General Hospital in Taiwan from 2011 to 2016. Comprehensive examinations including biochemical data, me

Association between Body Fat and Bone Mineral Density in Normal-Weight Middle-Aged Koreans.

BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis and osteopenia are characterized by reduced bone mineral density (BMD) and increased fracture risk. Although the risk of fractures is higher in underweight people than in overweight people, the accumulation of body fat (especially abdominal fat) can increase the risk of bone loss. This study aimed to evaluate the association between body fat percentage and BMD in normal-weight middle-aged Koreans. METHODS: This study included 1,992 adults (mean age, 48.7 years; 52.9% women). BMD and body fat were measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Multiple linear regress

Adipokines, hormones related to body composition, and insulin resistance in HIV fat redistribution syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Lipodystrophies are characterized by adipose tissue redistribution, insulin resistance (IR) and metabolic complications. Adipokines and hormones related to body composition may play an important role linking these alterations. Our aim was to evaluate adipocyte-derived hormones (adiponectin, leptin, resistin, TNF-α, PAI-1) and ghrelin plasma levels and their relationship with IR in HIV-infected patients according to the presence of lipodystrophy and fat redistribution. METHODS: Anthropometric and metabolic parameters, HOMA-IR, body composition by DXA and CT, and adipokines were eva

Body fat mass and serum leptin levels influence epoetin sensitivity in patients with ESRD.

BACKGROUND: Dose requirements of epoetin vary considerably among patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD), whereas determinants of epoetin sensitivity are poorly understood. Fat mass is an important source of adipokines, including interleukin 6 (IL-6), which is associated with decreased epoetin sensitivity. Furthermore, the adipokine leptin stimulates human erythroid development in vitro. In the present study, we investigate the impact of fat mass and leptin level on epoetin sensitivity in patients with ESRD. METHODS: One hundred sixty-six patients with ESRD (107 men; 64%) with a mean age

[Assessment of nutritional status and the incidence of excess body fat mass under normal body mass index in female rhythmic gymnasts].

UNLABELLED: One of the priority goals of sports medicine is maintaining athletes' health, both throughout their athletic careers and afterward. Identifying athletes with excess body fat under normal body mass index (BMI) is important for sports medicine, as excess body fat predicts the development of metabolic disorders, as well as the development of overweight and obesity after retirement. The aim of this study was to assess nutritional status using a method combining BMI and body fat percentage criteria, to identify the incidence and timing of the manifestation of excess body fat under norma

Full-body resistance training promotes greater fat mass loss than a split-body routine in well-trained males: A randomized trial.

While significant progress has been made in understanding the resistance training (RT) strategy for muscle hypertrophy increase, there remains limited knowledge about its impact on fat mass loss. This study aimed to investigate whether full-body is superior to split-body routine in promoting fat mass loss among well-trained males. Twenty-three participants were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 groups: full-body (n = 11, training muscle groups 5 days per week) and split-body (n = 12, training muscle groups 1 day per week). Both groups performed a weekly set volume-matched condition (75 sets/week, 8-

Short-term high-fat diet consumption increases body weight and body adiposity and alters brain stem taste information processing in rats.

Diet-induced obesity is known to develop whether exposed to a high-energy diet (HED) or a high-fat diet (HFD). However, it is still not clear whether the elevated energy content or the macronutrient imbalance is the key factor in early disease progression. Therefore, this study compared the short-term effects of 2 widely used rodent obesogenic diets, an HFD with 60 kcal% fat content and a carbohydrate-based HED, on the body weight, body fat content, glucose tolerance, and neuronal taste responses in rats. We found that only HFD induced an early significant body weight increase compared with th

Body Composition and Metabolic Assessment After Motor Complete Spinal Cord Injury: Development of a Clinically Relevant Equation to Estimate Body Fat.

Background: Obesity is at epidemic proportions in the population with spinal cord injury (SCI), and adipose tissue (AT) is the mediator of the metabolic syndrome. Obesity, however, has been poorly appreciated in SCI because of the lack of sensitivity that body mass index (BMI) conveys for obesity risk in SCI without measuring AT. Objectives: The specific objectives were to compare measures of body composition assessment for body fat with the criterion standard 4-compartment (4C) model in persons with SCI, to develop a regression equation that can be utilized in the clinical setting to estimate

Fat body CLOCK restrains innate immunity and maintains survival under dietary stress in Drosophila.

Both aging and a high-fat diet (HFD) dampen circadian gene transcription rhythms and promote chronic inflammation. How aging and HFD interact to affect peripheral molecular clocks and circadian behavior remains unclear. Using Drosophila melanogaster, we showed that aging and HFD additively dampened circadian behavior, with their adverse effects converging on the fat body (FB), a tissue that regulates systemic metabolism and innate immunity. Applying longitudinal in vivo bioluminescence recording in small, genetically defined cell populations, we found that molecular clocks in the FB were uniqu

Spatiotemporal Patterns of Fat Replacement in SELENON-Related Myopathy: A Whole-Body Imaging Study.

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: Variants in the SELENON gene cause a myopathy with axial weakness, scoliosis, and respiratory failure. This study aimed to characterize the temporal and spatial distribution of fat replacement across the whole body in patients with SELENON-related myopathy. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of genetically confirmed SELENON-related myopathy patients at a single center who had available whole-body skeletal muscle computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging data. The degree of fat replacement in 47 skeletal muscles was scored using the modified Mercuri score (m

Mapping organ fat distribution and body composition: towards precision profiling of cardiometabolic disease risk.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Adiposity exerts multisystem insults that influence multiple organs and physiological pathways. This underscores the need for a systems-level framework integrating key organ fat measurements to disentangle the heterogeneous pathways through which adiposity shapes differential cardiometabolic risk profiles. Such an approach could advance mechanistic understanding and enable more precise risk stratification. METHODS: In the UK Biobank, 24 935 participants without overt cardiac disease were studied. Six adiposity phenotypic groups were identified using unsupervised clusterin
