Effects of selected serotonin 5-HT(1) and 5-HT(2) receptor agonists on feeding behavior: possible mechanisms of action.

Serotonin (5-HT) receptor agonists with high affinity for the different subtypes (i.e. 5-HT(1A-1F), 5-HT(2A-2C)) of the 5-HT(1)- and 5-HT(2) receptor families have been shown to affect ingestive behavior. It has been assumed that: (1) stimulation of hypothalamic 5-HT(2C) or 5-HT(1B) receptors leads to a behaviorally specific hypophagic effect by accelerating satiety processes; (2) stimulation of 5-HT(2A) receptors leads to a disruption of the feeding cascade; and (3) stimulation of 5-HT(1A) and 5-HT(2B) receptors leads to a hyperphagic effect. The present paper reviews studies performed with t

Developmental Toxicity of n-Butanol in Chick Embryos: Dose-Dependent Effects on Morphology, Behavior, Oxidative Stress, Tissue Integrity, and Post-Hatching Feeding and Locomotor Behavior Disruption Induced by n-Butanol.

n-Butanol is extensively used in industrial, food, pharmaceutical, and petrochemical sectors, raising concerns about environmental and developmental exposure. However, evidence regarding its developmental toxicity remains limited. This study investigated the teratogenic and toxicological effects of n-butanol using a chick embryo (Gallus gallus domesticus) model, with emphasis on dose-dependent morphological alterations, feeding, and locomotory behavioral outcomes, oxidative stress responses, and histopathological damage. Fifty fertilized eggs were randomly assigned to five groups (n = 10 per g

Evaluating a novel automatic feeding device for hay provision in horses: behavioral outcomes in group and individual housing.

INTRODUCTION: This study evaluated a novel Automatic Feeding Device (AFD) for hay provision in group-housed and individually housed horses. METHODS: In Phase 1 (P1), behavioral responses to ground hay feeding (Control-Hay) and to hay delivery through the AFD were assessed in three group-housed mares under two conditions: AFD continuously open (O-AFD) and AFD alternating between open and closed periods (OC-AFD). In Phase 2 (P2), four individually housed horses were used to evaluate the behavioral effects of three AFD opening-closing schedules: long opening (LO-OP), medium opening (ME-OP), and

Chicken or the Egg: The Reciprocal Association Between Feeding Behavior and Animal Welfare and Their Impact on Productivity in Dairy Cows.

Feeding behavior in dairy cattle has a significant impact on feed efficiency, which is important for increasing the profitability of livestock and, at the same time, reducing the environmental impact. Feeding behavior can be measured by feeding time, meal duration, meal frequency, feeding rate, and rumination time. Higher feed intake is related to lower feed efficiency; whereas, an increase in feeding time facilitates chewing, reduces feed particle size and increases its digestibility. More frequent and shorter meals are usually associated with a more efficient use of feed due to improvement o

Feast or flee: bioelectrical regulation of feeding and predator evasion behaviors in the planktonic alveolate Favella sp. (Spirotrichia).

Alveolate (ciliates and dinoflagellates) grazers are integral components of the marine food web and must therefore be able to sense a range of mechanical and chemical signals produced by prey and predators, integrating them via signal transduction mechanisms to respond with effective prey capture and predator evasion behaviors. However, the sensory biology of alveolate grazers is poorly understood. Using novel techniques that combine electrophysiological measurements and high-speed videomicroscopy, we investigated the sensory biology of Favella sp., a model alveolate grazer, in the context of

Dietary zinc status reversibly alters both the feeding behaviors of the rats and gene expression patterns in diencephalon.

Nutritional status influences feeding behaviors, food preferences, and taste sensations. For example, zinc-deficient rats have been reported to show reduced and cyclic food intake patterns with increased preferences for NaCl. Although some impairments of the central nervous and endocrine systems have been speculated to be involved in these phenomena, the effects of short-term zinc deficiency on the brain have not been well examined to date. In this study, we performed a comprehensive analysis of the gene expression patterns in the rat diencephalon, which is a portion of the brain that includes

Increasing sodium bicarbonate level in high-concentrate diets for heifers. II. Effects on chewing and feeding behaviors.

Four Holstein heifers (264 ± 12 kg initial BW) were used in a 4 × 4 Latin square design with 21-day experimental periods to determine the effect of increasing levels of sodium bicarbonate (BICARB) (0%, 1.25%, 2.5% and 5%, of concentrate dry matter (DM) basis) on chewing and feed intake behavior when fed high-concentrate diets. Concentrate (13.41% CP, 13.35% NDF) and barley straw were fed once a day at 0830 h ad libitum. Feed bunks placed on scales and video recording were used to measure 24-h feed intake and chewing behavior, respectively. The patterns of feeding behavior (feed intake, meal si

A typical Y1 receptor regulates feeding behaviors: effects of a potent and selective Y1 antagonist, J-115814.

Neuropeptide Y (NPY) is a potent feeding stimulant. The orexigenic effect of NPY might be caused in part by the action of Y1 receptors. However, the existence of multiple NPY receptors including a possible novel feeding receptor has made it difficult to determine the relative importance of the Y1 receptor in feeding regulation. Herein we certified that the Y1 receptor is a major feeding receptor of NPY by using the potent and selective Y1 antagonist (-)-2-[1-(3-chloro-5-isopropyloxycarbonylaminophenyl)ethylamino]-6-[2-(5-ethyl-4-methyl-1,3-thiazol-2-yl)ethyl]-4-morpholinopyridine (J-115814) an

Field Experiments, Behavioral Analyses, and Digestive Physiology Reveal the Selective Oyster-Feeding Strategy of Thais luteostoma.

Pearl oyster aquaculture is severely constrained by biofouling organisms, particularly fouling oysters, which substantially impair pearl oyster growth and farming efficiency. This study investigated the selective oyster-feeding behavior of the predatory gastropod Thais luteostoma and evaluated its potential as an ecological biofouling control agent in pearl oyster culture. Field co-culture experiments showed that T. luteostoma did not adversely affect the survival of Pinctada fucata martensii, while effectively reducing biofouling loads and significantly improving pearl oyster growth performan

A Quasi-Experimental Study on Feeding Behaviors and Related Outcomes by Provision of Molded Puree in Aged-Care Facilities.

INTRODUCTION: Texture-modified diets are commonly used in the management of dysphagia in older adults. Conventional pureed diets, although safe, are often visually unappealing, potentially leading to reduced intake and negative feeding behaviors. Molded purees are created using food molds and gelling agents and aim to improve mealtime experiences through enhanced presentation. This study evaluated the effects of molded puree on feeding behaviors and intake amount in residents of aged-care facilities and whether any factors were associated with more favorable outcomes. METHODS: A quasi-experim

Early life access to hay does not affect later life oral behavior in feed-restricted heifers.

Dairy cattle are often raised in environments that lack natural feeding opportunities, and they perform abnormal repetitive behaviors (ARBs) as a result. Early life restriction can affect later life behavior. We evaluated whether access to hay in the milk-fed period would affect later life behavior in heifers experiencing short-term feed restriction and whether individuals were consistent in behavioral expression over time. We had 2 competing ideas about how this would unfold. First, being raised with hay, which reduced early life ARBs, could lead to fewer ARBs later in life. Alternatively, he

Does Singular and Stacked Corn Affect Choice Behavior for Oviposition and Feed in Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)?

Little is known about the effects of genetically modified corn plants on the foraging of Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith). Therefore, this study examines whether singular herbicide-tolerant and insect-resistant plants and their stacked events interfere with food preference and oviposition of S. frugiperda. Two non-Bt corn hybrids and three Bt-hybrids, some of them with glyphosate tolerance (GT), were evaluated. Food preference of larvae and biological parameters were assessed. Oviposition preference bioassays involved choice and no choice condition in plants uninfested and previously infeste

Paternal postnatal depressive symptoms, infant sleeping and feeding behaviors, and rigid parental regulation: a correlational study.

Paternal postnatal depression (PND) is now recognized as a serious and prevalent problem, associated with poorer well-being and functioning of all family members. Aspects of infant temperament, sleeping and feeding perceived by parents as problematic are associated with maternal PND, however, less is known about paternal PND. This study investigated depressive symptoms (Edinburgh postnatal depression scale (EPDS)) in 219 fathers of infants aged from 1 to 24 weeks (median 7.0 weeks). Infant predictor variables were sleeping problems, feeding problems and both mother and father reported temperam

Effect of subcutaneous injection of estradiol on feeding and drinking behaviors and body weight in basolateral amygdaloid lesioned rats.

BACKGROUND: Estradiol is known to inhibit food intake (FI), water intake (WI) and body weight (BW) across the species including women and it is most evident in rats. Ovariectomy in rats and menopause in women produce hyperphagia and obesity. Estradiol substitution in ovariectomized (OVX) rats and hormone replacement in women reverses these changes suggesting that lack of estradiol causes eating related disorders. However, the neurobiological target/s for estradiol mediating effects remains largely unknown. While lesions of basolateral amygdala (BLA) also produce hyperphagia, polydipsia and obe

Restless behavior increases over time, but not with compressibility of the flooring surface, during forced standing at the feed bunk.

Interest in the use of rubber flooring in freestall barns has increased, but little is known about which design features of these surfaces are important for cattle. In 2 experiments, we evaluated how the type and compressibility of the flooring surface in front of the feed bunk influenced the behavioral response to 4 h of forced standing after morning milking. Two flooring types were compared: rubber and concrete. Rubber was tested at 3 levels of compressibility: 2, 4, and 35 times as compressible as concrete. Four hours of forced standing was evaluated because it mimicked conditions that can
