INTRODUCTION: Simultaneous bilateral fractures of the neck of femur is rare. Hypocalcemia, epilepsy, osteoporosis and electrical injuries are known to cause similar injuries.
CASE REPORT: We report a case of a 43-year-old male who sustained an electrical shock injury following which he fell from a height of around 4 feet. Radiological studies confirmed bilateral transcervical neck of femur fracture. Laboratory investigations revealed the patient had extremely low levels of vitamin D (11.1ng/ml). Patient was treated with three 6.5 mm cannulated cancellous screws on each side. Patient had good

BACKGROUND: Modular necks in hip arthroplasty allow variations in neck-shaft angles, neck version and neck lengths and have been introduced to improve accuracy when reconstructing the anatomy and hip joint biomechanics. Periprosthetic bone resorption may be a consequence of stress shielding in the proximal femur after implantation of a femoral stem. The purpose of this study was to investigate the deformation pattern and load transfer of an uncemented femoral stem coupled to different modular necks in human cadaver femurs.
METHODS: A cementless femoral stem was implanted in twelve human cadav

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Owing to the high prevalence of osteoporosis and falls, elderly people are at risk of developing hip fractures. The objective of the current study is to assess the quality-of-life (QOL) of elderly (>60 years) with untreated hip fractures in a rural developmental block in Southern India.
METHODOLOGY: Twenty-one elderly with an untreated fracture neck of femur were identified with the help of community level health workers. EuroQol (EQ-5D) was administered to assess the QOL before and after the event. QOL was also assessed among a comparison group, matched for age and

BACKGROUND: 15-25% of general hospital admissions tend to involve patients that have had a short-term indwelling urinary catheter (IDC) inserted some time during their stay. There is little data on the specific incidence and complications of short-term urinary catheterization in elderly patients with neck of femur fractures.
METHODS: Data was collected from the notes of 50 patients at Hemel Hempstead General Hospital with neck of femur fractures retrospectively from 31 August 2007. Specific information on patient demographics, premorbid status, record and reason for urethral catheterization,

Reconstruction using a free vascularized fibula was performed on a long bony defect after osteomyelitis of the proximal femur. For this type of bone defect, a double-barrel fibular graft is recommended. The authors used this procedure for a 58-year-old male who had osteomyelitis of the left proximal femur. As osteotomy through a transplanted fibula can be safely performed, abduction osteotomy should be considered when coxa vara remains after reconstruction with a free vascularized fibula transfer.

The goal for surgical treatment of femoral neck fractures is achieving union through an anatomic reduction and stable fixation while avoiding osteonecrosis. This report describes the case of a 50-year-old male who presented with pain and swelling in his right hip and inability to bear weight over his right lower limb following a road traffic accident. The X-ray revealed a right-sided femoral neck fracture (Garden Type IV and Pauwels Type III). The patient was surgically treated with the GS Kulkarni (GSK) controlled dynamic hip screw. On follow-up, the bone healing time was 14 weeks and the pat

BACKGROUND: The anterolateral thigh (ALT) free flap is one of the most commonly used donor sites in head and neck reconstruction, however, it is not typically considered when an osseous component is needed.
METHODS: Soft tissue harvests, cadaveric study, and retrospective analysis of a series of 10 patients undergoing angiography were performed to assess vascular supply to the femoral cortex. In 6 patients, corticocancellous split-femur was incorporated into the ALT to reconstruct bony defects of the head and neck.
RESULTS: There is a consistent blood supply to the femur from the lateral fem

Background Delays between medical readiness for discharge and actual hospital discharge are a common challenge after neck of femur fracture surgery. These delays can prolong hospital stay, increase exposure to hospital-associated complications, occupy acute beds unnecessarily, and create additional distress for older patients and their families. Although hip fracture pathways often focus on time to surgery and orthogeriatric review, the discharge phase is less frequently examined as a target for local quality improvement. Methods We performed a retrospective before-and-after quality improvemen

The pathological progression and prognosis of traumatic femur head necrosis (TFHN) after femoral neck fracture (FNF) in children and adolescent is relatively unknown and has never been specifically characterized. As we speculated, the prognosis in such population would be poor and characterized as the high risk of femoral head collapse, hip deformity and degeneration in a short term. This retrospective case series enrolled 64 children and adolescent with TFHN who treated with observational treatment from 2000.1 to 2018.1. The primary outcomes, the progression of femoral head collapse, hip defo

INTRODUCTION: Bilateral, simultaneous, non-traumatic, pathological femur neck fractures due to renal osteodystrophy (RO) in chronic renal failure cases are uncommon but are increasingly being reported in the literature. Seizure episodes due to uremic encephalopathy could lead to such fractures.
CASE REPORTS: We describe three cases of patients with end-stage renal disease and RO, who presented with bilateral, non-traumatic femur neck fractures after episodes of grand mal con-vulsions. We also review the literature for all such similar cases and briefly discuss the path-ophysiology of RO and t

INTRODUCTION: Antiretroviral drugs are known to cause osteoporosis making the bones susceptible to fracture. Osteoporotic fractures are majorly seen in the vertebral bodies. Pathological fractures need to be fixed without much delay to start mobilization of the patients.
CASE REPORT: The present case describes a 72-year-old male who was diagnosed to be human immunodeficiency virus-positive 11 months back for which the patient was on a combination of antiretroviral therapy for 11 months. The patient was a farmer by occupation. The patient presented to us with left sided hip pain for1 week with

BACKGROUND: In 2018, Femoral Neck System (FNS), a dedicated fixator for femoral neck fractures, was introduced. This device has been in increasing use because it provides excellent rotational and angular stability. However, the shortest bolt of FNS is 75 mm long. Thus, it is not usable when the axial length of the proximal femur (ALPF), the distance between the innominate tubercle and the surface of the femoral head, is less than 80 mm. In this study, we investigated the incidence and associated factors of small ALPF (< 80 mm) in femoral neck fracture patients.
METHODS: We measured the ALPF o

The current protocol used to determine if an individual is osteoporotic relies on assessment of the individual's bone mineral density (BMD), which allows clinicians to judge the condition of a patient with respect to their peers. This, in essence, evaluates a person's fracture risk, because BMD is a good surrogate measure for strength and stiffness. In recent studies, the authors were the first to produce fracture toughness (FT) data from osteoporotic (OP) and osteoarthritic (OA) patients, by using a testing technique which basically analyzes the prerequisite stress conditions for the onset of

The incidence of geriatric hip fractures continues to rise in our aging population and has become a major public health concern globally. The primary outcome of this study was to determine whether Age-adjusted Charlson Comorbidity Index (ACCI) is associated with increased fracture-related complications in neck of femur fractures treated by internal fixation. This was a cohort study between January 2014 to June 2018. All patients ≥ 50 years old with an acute neck of femur fracture after low-energy trauma fixed with cannulated hip screws were included and followed-up for 1 year at a tertiary cen

Hip fracture is one of the most common injuries in the elderly population. Delay in operating on patients with hip fracture is associated with greater mortality and morbidity. A retrospective review of medical charts of patients who underwent primary total hip replacement (THR) for neck of femur fractures at our tertiary care level 1 trauma was carried out. Data was collected from the patients' charts and analysed for 30-day mortality and morbidity. A total of 96 patients were included in the study. Out of the 36 patients in the delayed THR group, mortality within 30 days was observed in 4 (11

Background Fractured neck of femurs is common, serious injuries usually requiring operative management. Red blood cell transfusions are often required to treat perioperative anaemia, but these are not without adverse effects. Aims and objectives The aim of this study is to identify subgroups of fractured neck of femur patients more likely to require red blood cell transfusions. We try to identify targeted strategies to reduce blood transfusion-associated adverse effects and thus improve outcomes. Design and methods A retrospective cohort study of 324 patients. Patients were divided into cohort

Neck of femur fractures have often been termed as "The Unsolved Fractures", since they have a guarded outcome even after improved understanding of biomechanics and biology of this area. Gap-nonunion is one such dreaded complication of this fracture, especially in younger (<60 years) population, where arthroplasty may not be the best go-to option. We have earlier described "The AIIMS BOX" technique to manage such cases of gap non-union in neglected neck femur fractures [1]. Here we intend to describe a more successful modification of this technique. We operated 7 cases of gap non-union with our

INTRODUCTION: Fragility fractures are a significant public health challenge often occurring as a result of frailty. Identifying patients who have increased risk of adverse outcomes can aid treating teams in managing these patients appropriately. We hypothesise that the appearance of the patient's head overlapping the lung fields (named Chin on Chest in Neck of Femur sign (COCNOF)) in the admission chest radiograph was a predictor of increased mortality at 3, 6 and 12 months.
METHODS: All consecutive patients admitted with hip fracture between 1st January - 31st December 2019 were analysed. We
