Brachyspira hyodysenteriae detected in a dog with acute haemorrhagic diarrhoea: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Brachyspira hyodysenteriae is a well-known pathogen of swine dysentery, a severe mucohaemorrhagic colitis in pigs. While several Brachyspira species are reported in dogs, natural Brachyspira hyodysenteriae detection in dogs is extremely rare. This case report aims to provide insight into the pathogenic potential and clinical significance of Brachyspira hyodysenteriae in dogs. CASE PRESENTATION: A 5-year-old male mongrel dog was presented with acute haemorrhagic diarrhoea shortly after being adopted from a shelter, where he had a history of soft stools. The faeces were watery, cont

Antiparasitic practices in Portuguese animal shelters: A survey of veterinarians.

Animal shelters often operate under significant resource constraints while caring for large populations of dogs and cats, many of whom are affected by parasitic infections that impact animal health and pose zoonotic risks. These limitations hinder the implementation of standardized, evidence-based parasite control protocols. This study surveyed veterinarians working in Portuguese shelters to describe current antiparasitic treatment practices and identify key limitations. A structured questionnaire was distributed to veterinarians in shelters or kennels affiliated with ICBAS, University of Port

Determination of 18 veterinary antibiotics in environmental water using high-performance liquid chromatography-q-orbitrap combined with on-line solid-phase extraction.

The use of antibiotics and their occurrence in the environment have received significant attention in recent years owing to the generation of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Antibiotic residues in water near livestock farming areas should be monitored to establish effective strategies for reducing the use of veterinary antibiotics. However, environmental water contamination resulting from veterinary antibiotics has not been studied extensively. In this work, we developed an analytical method for the simultaneous determination of multiple classes of veterinary antibiotic residues in environmenta

Faecal egg count reduction test, deep amplicon sequencing of isotype-1 β-tubulin gene and in ovo larval development assay reveal susceptibility to benzimidazoles of porcine nematodes Oesophagostomum spp. and Ascaris suum in outdoor-reared pigs in Germany.

Oesophagostomum spp. and Ascaris suum represent the most common porcine nematodes and anthelmintic resistance (AR) to various anthelmintics has been reported for Oesophagostomum. However, the current AR status for worm populations on German farms and practical methods facilitating reliable AR detection are missing. Herein, the efficacy of benzimidazoles (BZ) (fenbendazole, 5 mg/kg body weight, single dose) was analysed on 13 farms with outdoor access. The Faecal Egg Count Reduction Test (FECRT) estimates for strongyles on the farms (range 99.8-100 %) exceeded the target efficacy (99 %) of the

Experimental life cycle of Lagochilascaris major leiper, 1910 (Nematoda: Ascarididae) in cats (Felis domesticus).

The life cycle of Lagochilascaris major was studied using eggs collected from a natural clinical case in a domestic cat. Twenty-seven white mice (Mus musculaus), 5 hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus), and 1 vesper mouse (Calomys callosus) were orally inoculated with 800-1,300 embryonated eggs. When examined from 73 to 246 days postinoculation (PI), encysted third-stage larvae were seen in skeletal muscles and less frequently in connective tissue, liver, and lungs. Twenty-two of the 23 cats orally inoculated with 40-430 encysted larvae from these rodents, and necropsied from 1 hr to 185 days PI, be

Unraveling the mechanisms of benzimidazole resistance in hookworms: A molecular docking and dynamics study.

BACKGROUND: Benzimidazole resistance is an emerging challenge among parasitic helminths. It is caused by single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in specific loci in helminths' β-tubulin genes. Field studies and laboratory investigations reported resistance-associated SNPs in 4 codon locations with 7 allelic variations among hookworms. This study aimed to determine the effects of these mutations on the binding efficiency and behavior of the β-tubulin protein in four hookworm species against four benzimidazole drugs. METHODS: β-tubulin gene coding sequences of Ancylostoma caninum, A. duodenale,

Biannual anthelmintic treatments in village Djallonke sheep in The Gambia: effects on productivity and profitability.

An on-farm deworming trial was conducted between 1991 and 1995 on traditionally managed Djallonke sheep in The Gambia to assess the impact on productivity and profitability of prophylactic biannual anthelmintic treatments- Fifteen private flocks with an average of 25 animals per flock participated in the experiment. Half of each flock was dewormed twice a year while the other half served as the control group. The two productivity traits that were significantly improved by the treatment scheme tested were the number of lambs per lambing which increased from 1.11 +/- 0.31 (Mean +/- S.D.) to 1.19

Isolation and characterization of a naturally occurring multidrug-resistant strain of the canine hookworm, Ancylostoma caninum.

Soil-transmitted nematodes infect over a billion people and place several billion more at risk of infection. Hookworm disease is the most significant of these soil-transmitted nematodes, with over 500 million people infected. Hookworm infection can result in debilitating and sometimes fatal iron-deficiency anemia, which is particularly devastating in children and pregnant women. Currently, hookworms and other soil-transmitted nematodes are controlled by administration of a single dose of a benzimidazole to targeted populations in endemic areas. While effective, people are quickly re-infected,

Pseudocapillaria tomentosa (Nematoda: Capillariidae) in fish and its significance in comprehending host-parasite relationships: A review.

Helminth parasites, including capillariids, pose a significant health risk to animals, including fishes, birds, and mammals. Pseudocapillaria tomentosa is a widespread, but poorly studied parasite primarily infecting freshwater cyprinid fishes in the northern hemisphere. However, despite controlled laboratory procedures, the parasite is also prevalent in many zebrafish (Danio rerio) research facilities due to inadequate measures to ensure biological security and the ability of the nematode to endure chlorine treatment. Pseudocapillaria tomentosa typically causes chronic disease in fish, leadin

Clinical co-parasitic infections in a cat imported from Thailand.

Animal welfare benefits associated with international pet rescue and adoption are somewhat offset by increased potential for introduction and spread of foreign pathogens. This report describes clinical and parasitological findings in an adopted stray cat imported from Thailand. The cat was presented to a veterinary clinic for veterinary care 5 d after arrival in Canada. The cat was dewormed and passed a large mass of tapeworms on the following day. Fecal and blood samples were submitted to Diagnostic Services at the Atlantic Veterinary College (Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island). Eggs of Mam

Comparative study of Hot-Melt Extrusion, spray drying, and KinetiSol® processing to formulate a poorly water-soluble and thermolabile drug.

Fenbendazole (FBZ), a benzimidazole-carbamate anthelmintic, shows promising chemotherapeutic properties. However, it is a poorly water-soluble molecule, leading to low and variable oral bioavailability. This study investigated hot-melt extrusion (HME), spray drying, and KinetiSol processing (KSD) using Soluplus (SOL) to enhance FBZ's solubility. Formulating FBZ as an amorphous solid dispersion (ASD) by HME at a barrel temperature of 120 °C led to extensive chemical degradation of FBZ, generating the degradation product fenbendazoleamine. On the other hand, spray-drying (SD) generated an ASD, b

Antibiotic Residues in Cattle Reported to Be Raised Without Antibiotics.

In 2019, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) provided revised guidance for labeling claims of "raised without antibiotics" (RWA) and similar terms for meat and poultry produced in the US. In 2022, Price et al. published a study reporting that 15% of RWA-labeled cattle contained antibiotic residues in urine samples. In 2023, the USDA embarked on the project reported herein to independently determine the extent of antibiotic drug residues present in kidney and liver tissues from slaughtered cattle purported to be RWA. In this study, FSIS inspecto

The use of ITS-2 rDNA nemabiome metabarcoding to enhance anthelmintic resistance diagnosis and surveillance of ovine gastrointestinal nematodes.

A lack of quantitative information on the species composition of parasite communities present in fecal samples is a major limiting factor for the sensitivity, accuracy and interpretation of the diagnostic tests commonly used to assess anthelmintic efficacy and resistance. In this paper, we investigate the ability of ITS-2 rDNA nemabiome metabarcoding to enhance fecal egg count reduction testing by providing information on the effect of drug treatments on individual parasite species. Application of ITS-2 rDNA nemabiome metabarcoding to fecal samples from ewes from over 90 flocks across western

Field efficacy of four anthelmintics and confirmation of drug-resistant nematodes by controlled efficacy test and pyrosequencing on a sheep and goat farm in Denmark.

We describe a case of anthelmintic resistance on one of the largest organic small ruminant farms in Denmark. The flock was established in 2007 by purchase of animals from other Danish farms and had history of clinical parasitism, high mortality of young stock and anthelmintic treatment failure. In October 2011, 40 lambs and 40 kids were selected for a faecal egg count reduction test (FECRT) with fenbendazole (FBZ), ivermectin (IVM), moxidectin (MOX) and levamisole (LEV). Lambs were treated with the recommended sheep dose of each product while kids received the sheep dose of IVM, 1.5× sheep dos
