Tungiasis (caused by the sand flea Tunga penetrans) is hyperendemic in many resource-poor communities in Brazil. To understand transmission dynamics of this parasitic skin disease in a typical endemic area, a longitudinal study was carried out in a slum in Fortaleza in northeastern Brazil. In a door-to-door survey, the population of a randomly selected area (n = 1,460) was examined on four occasions for the presence of embedded sand fleas. Prevalence rates were 33.6% in March (rainy season), 23.8% in June (end of the rainy season), 54.4% in September (peak of the dry season), and 16.8% in Janu

BACKGROUND: The Junggar Basin plague focus was the most recently identified natural plague focus in China. Through extensive field investigations, great gerbils (Rhombomys opimus) have been confirmed as the main host in this focus, and the community structure of their parasitic fleas is associated with the intensity of plague epizootics. The aim of this study is to provide an indicator that can be surveyed to evaluate the risk of plague epizootics.
METHODS: Between 2005 and 2016, rodents and fleas were collected in the Junggar Basin plague focus. The parasitic fleas on great gerbils were harv

We collected Oropsylla montana from rock squirrels, Spermophilus varigatus, and infected a subset of collected fleas with Yersinia pestis, the etiological agent of plague. We used bar-tagged DNA pyrosequencing to characterize bacterial communities of wild, uninfected controls and infected fleas. Bacterial communities within Y. pestis-infected fleas were substantially more similar to one another than communities within wild or control fleas, suggesting that infection alters the bacterial community in a directed manner such that specific bacterial lineages are severely reduced in abundance or en

A variety of fungal, bacterial and parasitic infections may affect the skin of both humans and animals. Streptococcal and staphylococcal infections may be transmitted from animals to man. Although lice are host-specific, fleas may leave the preferred animal host and cause local allergic reactions when they bite humans. Ticks and mites commonly infest both humans and animals. A canine variety of Sarcoptes may occasionally cause human scabies.

The presence of ectoparasites is very common in stray dogs worldwide. So far there are limited data on the spread of external parasites of dogs in Greece. Due to the potential risk of human infestation and/or transmission of zoonotic agents, knowledge of their abundance and distribution is essential in order to better define preventive measures. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of external parasites of stray dogs from the area of Thessaloniki Greece. Out of a total of 242 stray dogs (85 males and 157 females) tested, the greatest percentages of infestation of 46.28

Rickettsia spp. are zoonotic pathogens and mainly transmitted by various arthropod vectors, such as fleas, ticks, and lice. Previous epidemiological studies indicated that ectoparasites infested on dogs or cats may be infected by Rickettsia spp., and transmit them to human beings accidentally. In this study, the prevalence of Rickettsia infection was evaluated using fleas and ticks from stray dogs and cats in Taiwan. A total of 158 pools made by 451 cat fleas (Ctenocephalides felis) from 37 dogs and 4 cats were used for analysis. Besides, 386 Rhipicephalus ticks collected from the other 62 str

Data relating to Rickettsia typhi infection in Spain are scarce. The seroprevalence of canine infection with this species has now been investigated, in dogs from the central province of Soria. The results of indirect immunofluorescence assays indicated that nine (12.3%) of the 73 dogs checked were carrying antibodies against R. typhi. The gender, age and breed of the dog, and whether it was used for hunting, shepherding, guarding or simply as a pet, apparently had no significant affect on the probability of it being seropositive. Being infested with fleas or having a history of such infestatio

Vultures are key species in ecosystems, limiting the spread of infectious diseases while scavenging carcasses. However, they are also the most threatened avian group with several conflicts with livestock farming, hunting, poisoning and intoxication with pesticides, lead and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Still, they represent a understudied group related to parasitological surveys, particularly in the Neotropics. This study aimed to characterize the metazoan parasitic fauna in three species of New World vultures (NWV): Turkey vulture (Cathartes aura), Black vulture (Coragyps atratus) a

California voles (Microtus californicus Peale) harbor fleas and ticks, may be infected with vector-borne pathogens, and could themselves suffer from disease and serve as a source of infection for people and other animals. Here we summarize publications, museum archives, and recent records of ticks and fleas from California voles. There have been 18 flea species reported on California voles with geographic locations reported for 13. During recent statewide surveys, we found six flea species, with the highest species richness in Humboldt County. We found three of five previously reported tick sp

In Brazil tungiasis is endemic in many resource-poor communities, where various domestic and sylvatic animals act as reservoirs for this zoonosis. To determine the role of animal reservoirs in human tungiasis, a cross-sectional study was performed in a traditional fishing community in northeast Brazil. The human and the animal populations were examined for the presence of embedded sand fleas and the prevalence and the intensity of infestation were correlated. The overall prevalence of tungiasis in humans was 39% (95% CI 34-43%). Of six mammal species present in the village, only cats and dogs

BACKGROUND: Bartonella henselae, Bartonella clarridgeiae and the rare Bartonella koehlerae are zoonotic pathogens, with cats being regarded as the main reservoir hosts. The spread of the infection among cats occurs mainly via fleas and specific preventive measures need to be implemented. The effectiveness of a 10% imidacloprid/4.5% flumethrin polymer matrix collar (Seresto®, Bayer Animal Health), registered to prevent flea and tick infestations, in reducing the risk of Bartonella spp. infection in privately owned cats, was assessed in a prospective longitudinal study.
METHODS: In March-May 20

BACKGROUND: The oriental rat flea (Xenopsylla cheopis), which infests several mammals, primarily rats (Rattus spp.), is the most notorious vector of human plague. In this study, we measured the genetic differentiation among populations of fleas from the Asian house rat (Rattus tanezumi) and the brown rat (R. norvegicus) using microsatellite markers in order to investigate the extent of host-switching in this parasite.
RESULTS: We developed 11 polymorphic microsatellite loci for our study, nine of which showed high potential for inbreeding. AMOVA showed that the majority (84.07%, P < 0.001) of

BACKGROUND: Fleas and ticks are common and harmful ectoparasites in dogs. They feed on blood, cause irritation, and transmit various pathogens. In Poland, the primary species Ctenocephalides felis (fleas), Ixodes ricinus, and Dermacentor reticulatus (ticks) pose a year-round threat. Veterinary organizations recommend continuous year-round protection against ectoparasites. However, actual owner compliance with this recommendation remains unknown.
METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed medical records from 2021 to 2023 across 45 veterinary practices in Poland. A total of 44,140 ectoparasiti

BACKGROUND: Dipylidium caninum is a common tapeworm of dogs contracted from ingestion of fleas containing the infective cysticercoid stage. Fluralaner is a systemically distributed isoxazoline class insecticide that delivers highly effective activity against fleas and ticks for up to 12 weeks after a single oral or topical treatment. This study evaluated the impact of this flea insecticidal efficacy on the transmission of D. caninum to dogs.
METHODS: Dogs were weighed and treated with a cestocide and then randomly assigned to 3 groups of 8. Fluralaner was administered topically (at the commer

BACKGROUND: Ticks and fleas are considered amongst the most important arthropod vectors of medical and veterinary concern due to their ability to transmit pathogens to a range of animal species including dogs, cats and humans. By sharing a common environment with humans, companion animal-associated parasitic arthropods may potentially transmit zoonotic vector-borne pathogens (VBPs). This study aimed to molecularly detect pathogens from ticks and fleas from companion dogs and cats in East and Southeast Asia.
METHODS: A total of 392 ticks and 248 fleas were collected from 401 infested animals (
