Deep fungal infections are endemic to tropical and subtropical regions and can occur in individuals who are both immunocompetent and immunocompromised. Clinically, these infections may present as verrucous plaques, subcutaneous nodules, abscesses or ulcerations. Common causative organisms in immunocompetent hosts include Sporothrix schenckii, Madurella mycetomatis and Fonsecaea pedrosoi. However, emerging evidence suggests that Trichosporon asahii and Candida parapsilosis are increasingly implicated in these infections. BACKGROUND: Chromomycosis, or chromoblastomycosis, is caused by cutaneous inoculation of dematiaceous fungi of telluric or plant origin. It is generally seen in tropical or subtropical zones. Treatment of the condition is known to be complex. Herein we report a case of chromomycosis contracted in a temperate region of Eastern Europe/Central Asia that was effectively treated with oral itraconazole and terbinafine in combination with cryotherapy.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A 44-year-old immunocompetent male subject consulted for a lesion on the buttocks that he had sustained 16 years earlier, and wh

The natural history of chromoblastomycosis was studied in Madagascar by analysing the characteristics of 1323 confirmed cases observed since 1955, including 45 patients receiving a new antifungic drug (terbinafine) during a multicentric study organized in 1995. The surveys data, conserved by the histopathology laboratory in the Institut Pasteur of Madagascar during 40 years, permit this retrospective analysis. The description of two ecosystems, one in the North with Fonsecaea pedrosoi evolving in the tropical rainforest and one in the South with Cladophialophora carrionii (41% of the whole sam

PURPOSE: We sought to illustrate the difficulty in managing uncommon, pigmented mold-related corneal ulceration and to highlight the role of itraconazole in treating these patients.
METHOD: We describe the management and clinical course of a patient with a recurring corneal infection caused by Fonsecaea pedrosoi and discuss this experience in the light of existing literature on management of cutaneous chromoblastomycosis.
RESULTS: A corneal ulcer caused by this organism healed initially on treatment with topical and systemic antifungal medication, but infection recurred in the deep stroma 4

Neurotropic dematiaceous fungi are primary agents of cerebral phaeohyphomycosis, a life-threatening brain infection with high mortality. However, the genomic basis underlying their virulence, stress tolerance, and antifungal resistance is poorly understood. In this study, we present high-quality hybrid genome assemblies of three major neurotropic dematiaceous fungi, Cladophialophora bantiana, Fonsecaea monophora, and Cladosporium cladosporioides, using Nanopore long-read and Illumina short-read sequencing platforms. The assembled genomes ranged from 31.5 to 39.9 Mb, with high completeness (>98

Chromoblastomycosis (CBM) is a chronic fungal infection of the cutaneous and subcutaneous tissues caused by brown pigmented fungi. Fonsecaea monophora is one of the most common pathogens of CBM in China. Most formal cases have been reported from Southern China, however, the infection is not uncommon in Eastern China where very few case series are available. To describe the clinical aspects of CBM, we report a series of 11 cases between 2018 and 2021 at a single medical center in Eastern China. The patients were predominately male (n = 9) and the disease duration ranged from 3 months to 20 year

BACKGROUND: The dematiaceous fungi cause numerous infections in both immunocompetent as well as immunocompromised individuals. The route of infection is either respiratory or subcutaneous/ocular implantation. Despite the rising incidence of these infections, very few studies have been conducted to decipher the seasonal and geographic variation of environmental burden of these fungi.
METHODS: We conducted environmental surveillance (both vegetation and air) to determine seasonal spore burden of dematiaceous fungi in urban and rural regions of North India, namely Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and

Chromoblastomycosis is one of the most frequent chronic infections caused by melanized fungi. In order to evaluate the clinical characteristics of chromoblastomycosis in Mainland China, we performed an evidence-based review of published literature. PubMed and Chinese-language database of CNKI, VIP and Wanfang data during January 1990-August 2011 were searched. Epidemiology, clinical features, laboratory findings, therapy and prognosis were analyzed. Cladophialophora carrionii was the most common causative agent in the north of the Mainland China, and Fonsecaea monophora and F. pedrosoi were th

This work was based on the analysis of digital images of histochemical profile from subcutaneous lesions in sporotrichosis (ST) and chromoblastomycosis (CM) patients. An additional aim was the detection of carbohydrate expression using lectin histochemical analysis of the different carbohydrates in the fungal cell wall from four different species (Sporothrix schenckii, Fonsecaea pedrosoi, Phialophora verrucosa, and Cladophialophora carrionii) associated with diseases mentioned earlier. Slides from tissue biopsies from ST and CM positive patients (n=10, each) were stained according to routine t

BACKGROUND: Chromoblastomycosis (CMB) is a chronic granulomatous fungal infection that affect the skin and subcutaneous tissues. It is clinically problematic due to limited treatment options, low cure rates, and high rates of relapse. This underscores the necessity for innovative treatment approaches. In this study, potassium iodide (KI) combined with Methylene Blue (MB) mediated antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (PDT) were assessed in the treatment of Fonsecaea monophora (F. monophora) both in vitro and in vivo. And the underlying mechanism that contributes to the efficacy of this treatment

INTRODUCTION: Verrucous plaques mimicking chromoblastomycosis are frequently seen in dermatology outpatient departments (OPD). However, no scientific evaluation has been carried out till date from eastern India. So this present endeavour is aimed at a thorough study of those cases to readdress the challenges in diagnosis and management in chromoblastomycosis from this part of the country.
AIM: The study is to observe the incidence of proved chromoblastomycosis cases from clinically mimicking conditions and to note therapeutic prospects by use of different antifungal agents.

Scytalidium dimidiatum is the leading cause of fungal foot diseases in Thailand, in contrast to similar studies in which dermatophytes have been identified as the predominant pathogens. By contrast, the prevalence of Candida albicans in our study was only 2.6 approximately 3.0%. Scytalidium fungal foot infection is clinically indistinguishable from that caused by dermatophytes and should be included as a possible cause of treatment failure in tinea pedis and onychomycosis. Without proper culture identification, clinically diagnosed patients would be treated with a standard antifungal regimen l

BACKGROUND: Chromoblastomycosis (CBM) is an implantation mycosis caused by dematiaceous fungi in the tropical and subtropical regions. It is a neglected tropical disease that primarily affects populations living in poverty. Although located in tropical and subtropical regions, Taiwan is a highly industrialized country with an advanced healthcare system that offers a unique perspective on CBM.
OBJECTIVES: To explore the epidemiology, clinical characteristics and treatment outcomes of patients with CBM in northern Taiwan.
METHODS: This study included 14 patients who were pathologically diagnos

In the present study, we examined prolonged infection after antigenic co-stimulation by inoculation of the fungus Fonsecaea pedrosoi at two different sites in three mouse strains (BALB/c, Swiss, and C57BL/6). Using this murine model of infection, we showed that antigen induction of infection at more than one site led to a local suppression of active lesions, which increased the time course of experimental chromoblastomycosis (CBM). Footpad infection with a simultaneous infection of the peritoneum or a mucosal site appeared to cause prolonged infection and frequent fungal disseminations. Using

BACKGROUND: Chromoblastomycosis (CBM) is a chronic subcutaneous mycosis caused by dematiaceous fungi that mainly affects rural workers in tropical and subtropical regions. The disease poses a treatment challenge due to its refractory nature and high relapse rate. To date, few cases have been reported in Peru. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed epidemiological, clinical, microbiological, and treatment data from CBM cases diagnosed between 2011 and 2024 at the Clinical Mycology Unit of the Instituto de Medicina Tropical Alexander von Humboldt (IMTAvH) in Lima, Peru. Diagnosis was confirmed by

BACKGROUND: Chromoblastomycosis is a subcutaneous mycosis, seen frequently in tropical areas, and caused by dematiaceous fungi. It produces nodulo-verrucous lesions in the arms and legs. There is no treatment of choice for this disease and sometimes a combination of chemotherapy and physical therapy is necessary.
METHODS: The study included 12 patients diagnosed with chromoblastomycosis by means of fungal and histopathologic tests. The patients were assigned to three treatment groups: patients with small lesions, not greater than 15 cm2 in area, were assigned to Group 1, in which the treatmen

Chromoblastomycosis (CBM) is a chronic, progressive, cutaneous and subcutaneous fungal infection following the traumatic implantation of certain dematiaceous fungi. The disease has worldwide prevalence with predominant cases reported from humid tropical and subtropical regions of America, Asia, and Africa. Diagnosis is often delayed or misdirected either due to poor degree of clinical suspicions or clinical simulation of dermatological conditions. The infection is not uncommon in India and several case reports from the sub-Himalayan belt and western and eastern coasts of India have been publis

BACKGROUND: If not diagnosed earlier, chromoblastomycosis has a chronic evolutional course that may cause several problems, such as difficulty in managing therapy because of the recrudescent character of the disease, potential association with the growth of epidermoid carcinoma in affected regions, and poor quality of life and work incapacity to the patient. Although infrequent, new cases are reported in the state of Rio Grande do Sul every year, ratifying the necessity for further studies on this disease.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to review clinical features and response to th

Several subcutaneous and deep-seated mycoses are either observed more frequently in the tropical areas or are restricted to certain regions within the tropics. These mycoses include sporotichosis, chromoblastomycosis, entomophthoromycosis, eumycetoma, lobomycosis, and paracoccidioidomycosis. In sporotrichosis and paracoccidioidomycosis, therapy often results in either complete resolution or marked improvement. For decades sporotrichosis has been treated successfully with potassium iodide, but recently the triazole compounds, especially itraconazole, have proved effective and free of major side
