Climate change intensifies mycotoxin contamination through rising temperatures, elevated CO2, and altered precipitation. Global surveys reveal a high and widespread prevalence of major mycotoxins in staple cereals, with low-income countries bearing the greatest burden. This escalating contamination poses a growing threat to global food security, compromising both food availability and safety. To mitigate these risks, we propose four actions: establish a predictive global surveillance system integrating climate-crop-fungal models, deploy field-ready biosensors, scale up climate-resilient agricu

Food insecurity occurs when household members experience a change in their diets due to limited resources. Compared with all households, food insecurity is more prevalent among those with children in the United States. In approximately half of those households, children did not directly experience food insecurity, indicating that coping strategies, or actions to manage food insecurity, may help prevent this situation by limiting changes to the quality and quantity of the diet. The aim of this scoping review is to summarize and examine documented coping strategies used by low-income households

The association of household food insecurity with symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and emotional dysregulation in children was examined in this study. We utilized baseline data from 134 children aged 6-12 years who were enrolled in a clinical trial investigating multinutrient supplementation as a treatment for ADHD and emotional dysregulation. Household food security status was assessed using the 18-item US Household Food Security Survey Module. The symptoms of ADHD and emotional dysregulation disorders (oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and disruptive mood dysregu

INTRODUCTION: Research has demonstrated that food insecurity during childhood is associated with worse physical and mental health in childhood. However, little is known about how food insecurity during childhood impacts health outcomes in young adulthood.
METHODS: This study analyzed data from the Future of Families and Child Wellbeing Study (2024), a longitudinal birth cohort study of children born in 1998-2000. Childhood food insecurity trajectory groups from age 3 to 15 years were identified using group-based trajectory modeling. Associations between childhood food insecurity trajectory gr

BACKGROUND: Post-harvest losses (PHL) of perishable vegetables have been a major problem that threatens food security and nutritional outcomes in sub- Saharan Africa. Smallholder farmers also incur heavy losses during the peak harvesting seasons in Rwanda, especially of fruits with high perishability. This research paper examined the extent of post-harvest losses of tomatoes, leafy greens, and carrots, as well as the role played by these foods in the household dietary deficiencies of Kamonyi District. METHODS: Measures: The cross-sectional study was done in all of the 12 sectors of the Kamonyi

Aging populations may be associated with increased nutritional risk, malnutrition, and food insecurity. This study aims to examine the relationship between food insecurity and nutritional risk, taking into account selected characteristics of the study group, and factors describing nutritional risk. It was conducted between May and July 2021, among 417 people aged 60 and older, in two regions of Poland. Questions from the SCREEN-14 questionnaire were used to assess nutritional risk. Selected questions from the HFSS questionnaire (U.S. Household Food Security Survey Module) concerning the elderl

Inadequate social protection, stagnant wages, unemployment, and homelessness are associated with Australian household food insecurity. Little is known about the recipients of food charity and whether their needs are being met. This cross-sectional study of 101 food charity recipients in Perth, Western Australia, measured food security, weight status, sociodemographic characteristics and food acquisition practices. Seventy-nine percent were male, aged 21-79 years, 90% were unemployed, 87% received social assistance payments, and 38% were homeless. Ninety-one percent were food insecure, 80% with

Women are the "guardians of the kitchen" and central to household food security, yet their role has never been studied across the Hindukush region or Pamiri Knot. This study explores the women's knowledge (specifically from the Khowar (Kho) and Wakhi linguistic groups) of local food systems and determines their role in ensuring household food security and sustainability in the mountain regions of northern Pakistan. Based on in-depth semi-structured interviews with female informants in the Rech and Broghil valleys of upper Chitral, 91 different types of food products were recorded, including wi

BACKGROUND: Recent commentary on the health consequences of natural disasters has suggested a dearth of research on understanding the antecedents prior to the disaster that are associated with health consequences after the disaster. Utilizing data from a two-wave panel survey of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, conducted just prior to and six weeks after the January 2010 earthquake, we test factors prior to the quake hypothesized to be associated with food insecurity after the quake.
METHODS: Using random Global Positioning System (GPS) sampling, we re-interviewed 93.1% (N = 1732) of the original 1,800

Smallholder dairy farmers in Ethiopia face low productivity and food insecurity, in part due to limited use of artificial insemination (AI) and overstretched extension systems. Artificial insemination (AI) requires accurate estrus detection, timely communication, and quick technician response, which are difficult to achieve in rural areas with limited service. This study analysed how ICT-based extension is associated with partial substitution for weak institutional service delivery to improve AI adoption and use, milk productivity, and food security in central Ethiopia. We use survey data from

Expectations of global crop yields, especially in major production countries, strongly influence crop-export policies and global food security, especially during national and global disruptions. Timely yield estimation remains difficult at the global scale because of large differences in crop phenology, environmental conditions and agricultural practices. Here we propose a framework that integrates yield statistics with multi-source remote-sensing and complementary geospatial data, and employs random forest models to estimate major crop yields in all production countries. We selected three cas

Nutrition and health are fundamental pillars of human development across the entire life-span. The potential role of non-timber forest products (NTFPs) in improving nutrition and health and reduction of poverty has been recognized in recent years. NTFPs continue to be an important source of household food security, nutrition, and health. Despite their significant contribution to food security, nutrition, and sustainable livelihoods, these tend to be overlooked by policy-makers. NTFPs have not been accorded adequate attention in development planning and in nutrition-improvement programmes in Gh

Hunger has been a concern for generations and has continued to plague hundreds of millions of people around the world. Although many efforts have been devoted to reduce hunger, challenges such as growing competitions for natural resources, emerging climate changes and natural disasters, poverty, illiteracy, and diseases are posing threats to food security and intensifying the hunger crisis. Concerted efforts of scientists to improve agricultural and food productivity, technology, nutrition, and education are imperative to facilitate appropriate strategies for defeating hunger and malnutrition.

BACKGROUND: Food insecurity occurs when access to food is limited by financial hardship. Yet, paradoxically, food insecurity is associated with overeating, with emerging evidence that it may be related to disordered eating. A recent report found that food insecurity was associated with binge-eating disorder (BED), but it is not yet known whether food insecurity is also associated with bulimia nervosa (BN).
METHODS: Participants were 873 respondents recruited online who completed a battery of established measures and were categorized into three study groups: healthy-weight (HW), BED, and BN. H

BACKGROUND: While the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) aims to reduce food insecurity among low-income households, nearly half of recipients remain food insecure. Increasing state minimum wages could help improve food security, but because SNAP benefits are income-dependent, net effects are unclear.
METHODS: Using the US Current Population Survey Food Security Supplement (2002-2019), we linked households interviewed in two consecutive Decembers to create a 2-year panel. The primary sample included SNAP recipient households with at least one adult working in year 1. The exposur
