A dual-functional fluorescent probe for biosystem imaging and food safety monitoring of HSO3- with high selectivity and sensitivity.

In the food field, HSO3- is commonly used as a beverage additive, antioxidant, enzyme inhibitor, and preservative to extend shelf life and freshness. However, excessive intake of exogenous HSO3- can lead to abnormal HSO3- concentration levels in the body, causing cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. This highlights the urgent need to develop a rapid and sensitive probe for the quantitative detection of HSO3- in foods and biosystems. In this study, we design and synthesize a novel HSO3- fluorescent probe named DCPD. Bioimaging experiments show that DCPD has good mitochondrial targeting and

Marine Oligo-Fucoidan as a Safe Functional Food for Managing Uterine Fibroids: Results from a Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.

Background: Uterine leiomyomas, commonly known as fibroids, are the most prevalent benign tumors in women of reproductive age and a major contributor to gynecological morbidity. Although surgery and hormonal therapies are standard treatments, their associated side effects have prompted the search for safer, non-hormonal alternatives. Oligo-fucoidan, a sulfated polysaccharide derived from brown seaweed, has demonstrated anti-fibrotic and estrogen-regulating effects in preclinical models, but its clinical potential remains largely unexplored. Methods: In this randomized, double-blind, placebo-co

Development of Moringa oleifera as functional food targeting NRF2 signaling: antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity in experimental model systems.

Pharmacological activation of nuclear factor erythroid 2 related factor 2 (NRF2) provides protection against several environmental diseases by inhibiting oxidative and inflammatory injury. Besides high in protein and minerals, Moringa oleifera leaves contain several bioactive compounds, predominantly isothiocyanate moringin and polyphenols, which are potent inducers of NRF2. Hence, M. oleifera leaves represent a valuable food source that could be developed as a functional food for targeting NRF2 signaling. In the current study, we have developed a palatable M. oleifera leaf preparation (hencef

Prospects of microgreens as budding living functional food: Breeding and biofortification through OMICS and other approaches for nutritional security.

Nutrient deficiency has resulted in impaired growth and development of the population globally. Microgreens are considered immature greens (required light for photosynthesis and growing medium) and developed from the seeds of vegetables, legumes, herbs, and cereals. These are considered "living superfood/functional food" due to the presence of chlorophyll, beta carotene, lutein, and minerals like magnesium (Mg), Potassium (K), Phosphorus (P), and Calcium (Ca). Microgreens are rich at the nutritional level and contain several phytoactive compounds (carotenoids, phenols, glucosinolates, polyster

Sargassum horneri as a Functional Food Ameliorated IgE/BSA-Induced Mast Cell Activation and Passive Cutaneous Anaphylaxis in Mice.

Sargassum horneri (S. horneri), an edible brown alga, has been proposed as a functional food with an improvement effect on abnormal skin immune responses. The present study investigates the anti-allergic effect of an ethanol extract from S. horneri (SHE) on immunoglobulin E (IgE)/bovine serum albumin (BSA)-mediated activation in bone marrow-derived cultured-mast cells (BMCMCs) and passive cutaneous anaphylaxis (PCA) reaction in mice. SHE markedly and dose-dependently suppressed the degranulation of BMCMCs by reducing the β-hexosaminidase and histamine release without cytotoxicity. In addition,

Cerebral activations during viewing of food stimuli in adult patients with acquired structural hypothalamic damage: a functional neuroimaging study.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Obesity is common following hypothalamic damage due to tumours. Homeostatic and non-homeostatic brain centres control appetite and energy balance but their interaction in the presence of hypothalamic damage remains unknown. We hypothesized that abnormal appetite in obese patients with hypothalamic damage results from aberrant brain processing of food stimuli. We sought to establish differences in activation of brain food motivation and reward neurocircuitry in patients with hypothalamic obesity (HO) compared with patients with hypothalamic damage whose weight had remaine

The interplay of central insulin and menstrual cycle on functional brain networks and neural food cue reactivity in women.

The menstrual cycle impacts food intake, peripheral metabolism, and brain function. One well-known central regulator of eating behavior is the hormone insulin. Here, we show that the responsiveness of functional brain networks to central insulin varies dynamically across the menstrual cycle in premenopausal women. Intranasal insulin (INI) administration increases functional connectivity within networks that support decision-making processes (namely the default mode and salience network) in the follicular compared to the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. In contrast, INI decreases functional

Optimization of Desalting Conditions for the Green Seaweed Codium fragile for Use as a Functional Food with Hypnotic Effects.

Codium fragile (CF) contains various bioactive compounds, but its high salt content (39.8%) makes its use as a functional food challenging. Here, we aimed to optimize the desalination process and verify changes in functionality based on variations in salt and total phenolic contents. To optimize the CF immersion conditions for the lowest salt content and monitor the total phenolic content, a response surface methodology was used. The optimal immersion conditions were as follows: X1 (immersion temperature) = 42.8 °C; X2 (immersion time) = 1.0 h. An inverse correlation was noted between salt con
