Identifying neuroimaging biomarkers for psychogenic erectile dysfunction by fusing multi-level brain information: A resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging study.

BACKGROUND: Psychogenic erectile dysfunction (pED) patients who are under their 40s in China consist of a major component of erectile dysfunction. Existing neuroimaging studies have demonstrated that pED is a functional disorder with aberrant neural representations on the local level, the regional level, and the global level, respectively. Therefore, it is reasonable to incorporate brain information from all these levels simultaneously into consideration when identifying neuroimaging biomarkers for pED. However, no such endeavors have been made in previous studies to fully disclose the central

An instrument for visual cue associated craving of HEroin (IV-CACHE): A preliminary functional neuroimaging-based study of validity and reliability.

BACKGROUND: Craving is the subjective experience of desire for specific drugs. Lack of reliability and untested construct validity are limiting factors for the existing questionnaires to assess craving. AIM: The aim of the study was to design and test the validity and reliability of an instrument to assess visual cue-induced craving for heroin dependence. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the first stage of the study, a set of forty images (twenty each of heroin and neutral cues-) were captured and validated by expert consensus. Thirty male participants with heroin dependence rated their cue-induced

Prediction of Differential Pharmacologic Response in Chronic Pain Using Functional Neuroimaging Biomarkers and a Support Vector Machine Algorithm: An Exploratory Study.

OBJECTIVE: There is increasing demand for prediction of chronic pain treatment outcomes using machine-learning models, in order to improve suboptimal pain management. In this exploratory study, we used baseline brain functional connectivity patterns from chronic pain patients with fibromyalgia (FM) to predict whether a patient would respond differentially to either milnacipran or pregabalin, 2 drugs approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of FM. METHODS: FM patients participated in 2 separate double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover studies, one evaluating milnacip

Assessing combinatorial effects of HIV infection and former cocaine dependence on cognitive control processes: A functional neuroimaging study of response inhibition.

Individuals with a diagnosis of co-morbid HIV infection and cocaine use disorder are at higher risk of poor health outcomes. Active cocaine users, both with and without HIV infection, show clear deficits in response inhibition and other measures of executive function that are instrumental in maintaining drug abstinence, factors that may complicate treatment. Neuroimaging and behavioral evidence indicate normalization of executive control processes in former cocaine users as a function of the duration of drug abstinence, but it is unknown to what extent co-morbid diagnosis of HIV affects this p

Disrupted topological properties of brain networks in erectile dysfunction patients owing predominantly to psychological factors: a structural and functional neuroimaging study.

INTRODUCTION: Human brain was a complex network of interconnected regions. Recent neuroimaging studies had showed that the disruption of brain connectivity was associated with psychological disorders. Abnormal rich club and robustness of brain networks might have a key role in the pathophysiology of psychogenic erectile dysfunction (pED). METHODS: Both diffusion and functional magnetic resonance imaging were performed in pED patients and healthy controls (HC). Measures of rich club organization and robustness under targeted attack were explored. RESULTS: Both pED and HC showed structural and

Combining Disrupted and Discriminative Topological Properties of Functional Connectivity Networks as Neuroimaging Biomarkers for Accurate Diagnosis of Early Tourette Syndrome Children.

Tourette syndrome (TS) is a childhood-onset neurological disorder. To date, accurate TS diagnosis remains challenging due to its varied clinical expressions and dependency on qualitative description of symptoms. Therefore, identifying accurate and objective neuroimaging biomarkers may help improve early TS diagnosis. As resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI) has been demonstrated as a promising neuroimaging tool for TS diagnosis, previous rs-fMRI studies on TS revealed functional connectivity (FC) changes in a few local brain networks or circuits. However, no study explored the disrupted topol

Altered resting-state brain function in diabetic retinopathy: a meta-analysis of combined transcriptome-neuroimaging study.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with diabetes may develop cognitive dysfunction, particularly at advanced stages of the disease, manifested by impairments in learning, memory, language, and judgment. Previous studies have reported abnormal brain functional alterations in patients with diabetic retinopathy (DR), which may be associated with cognitive impairment in diabetes; however, the molecular correlates of these brain alterations remain poorly understood. METHODS: In this study, we performed a coordinate-based neuroimaging meta-analysis to identify convergent resting-state brain functional alterati

Impaired Glymphatic Function and Post-stroke Cognitive Decline after Intracerebral Hemorrhage: A Serial Neuroimaging Study.

After an intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), impaired glymphatic function (GF) can result in neurotoxin buildup in the brain. In this serial MRI imaging study, we investigated the association between impaired GF and post-stroke cognitive impairment (PSCI). The glymphatic system is a waste clearance mechanism in the brain, consisting of the perivascular space (PVS) formed by astroglial end-feet surrounding arteries and veins. Glymphatic dysfunction has been associated with cognitive decline in patients with neurodegenerative diseases. The diffusion tensor imaging along the perivascular space (DTI-A

Effects of computerized cognitive training on brain function in children with ADHD: A longitudinal neuroimaging study based on fALFF.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental condition characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Emerging evidence suggests that ADHD is linked to hypofunction of the prefrontal-parietal attention network, accompanied by compensatory hyperactivation in the cerebellum and brainstem. However, the underlying neural mechanisms remain insufficiently understood. In recent years, computerized cognitive training has gained attention as a promising non-pharmacological intervention for alleviating ADHD symptoms, though its m

Neuroimaging Metrics of Drug and Food Processing in Cocaine-Dependence, as a Function of Psychopathic Traits and Substance Use Severity.

Previous studies suggest that psychopathic traits commonly present as comorbid with substance use disorders. Moreover, neuroimaging and psychometric findings suggest that psychopathic traits may predispose individuals to a sensitized reward response to drugs. Given that substance use disorders are characterized by a neurocognitive bias toward drug-reward relative to non-drug reward, it is possible that heightened psychopathic characteristics may further predispose to this processing bias. To evaluate this possibility, we assessed psychopathic traits (measured using the PCL-R; Hare, 2003) in 10

Executive Function in Adolescence: A Commentary on Regulatory Control and Depression in Adolescents: Findings From Neuroimaging and Neuropsychological Research.

This commentary addresses the manner in which executive control processes and their development is impacted by major depressive episodes during adolescence. Strengths of the articles within this special issue include the breadth of executive functions that were examined, incorporation of biological probes to understand neural mechanisms involved in observed impairments, the use of longitudinal paradigms to assess developmental timing, consideration and modeling of comorbid conditions, and the identification of individual difference factors that may serve as both liabilities and resilience fact

Neuroimaging evidence of altered fronto-cortical and striatal function after prolonged cocaine self-administration in the rat.

Cocaine addiction is often modeled in experimental paradigms where rodents learn to self-administer (SA) the drug. However, the extent to which these models replicate the functional alterations observed in clinical neuroimaging studies of cocaine addiction remains unknown. We used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to assess basal and evoked brain function in rats subjected to a prolonged, extended-access cocaine SA scheme. Specifically, we measured basal cerebral blood volume (bCBV), an established correlate of basal metabolism, and assessed the reactivity of the dopaminergic system by mapping

'Munchausen's syndrome by proxy' or a 'miscarriage of justice'? An initial application of functional neuroimaging to the question of guilt versus innocence.

'Munchausen's syndrome by proxy' characteristically describes women alleged to have fabricated or induced illnesses in children under their care, purportedly to attract attention. Where conclusive evidence exists the condition's aetiology remains speculative, where such evidence is lacking diagnosis hinges upon denial of wrong-doing (conduct also compatible with innocence). How might investigators obtain objective evidence of guilt or innocence? Here, we examine the case of a woman convicted of poisoning a child. She served a prison sentence but continues to profess her innocence. Using a modi

Mapping brain synergy dysfunction in heart failure patients with reduced and mildly reduced ejection fraction using multimodal neuroimaging: Functional and molecular insights.

BACKGROUND: Heart failure (HF) is frequently accompanied by cognitive and affective impairments, yet the underlying neural mechanisms of altered brain information processing in HF remain poorly defined. METHODS: We applied an integrated information decomposition framework to resting-state fMRI from 48 HF patients (including HFrEF and HFmrEF, with LVEF < 50 %) and 33 matched healthy controls, quantifying synergistic and redundant information across 246 brain regions. Group differences were assessed at global and regional levels and correlated with cardiac function, cognitive performance, and a

A multimodal neuroimaging study of youth at risk for substance use disorders: Functional magnetic resonance imaging and [18F]fallypride positron emission tomography.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent alcohol use is the norm, but only some develop a substance use disorder. The increased risk might reflect heightened mesocorticolimbic responses to reward-related cues but results published to date have been inconsistent. METHODS: Young social drinkers (age 18.5 ± 0.6 y.o.) who have been followed since birth were recruited from high- versus low-risk trajectories based on externalizing (EXT) behavioral traits. All had functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans to measure mesocorticolimbic responses to alcohol, juice, and water cues (High EXT: 20F/10M; Low EXT: 15

Modulation of Brain Activity and Functional Connectivity by Acupuncture Combined With Donepezil on Mild-to-Moderate Alzheimer's Disease: A Neuroimaging Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Functional brain imaging changes have been proven as potential pathophysiological targets in early-stage AD. Current longitudinal neuroimaging studies of AD treated by acupuncture, which is one of the growingly acknowledged non-pharmacological interventions, have neither adopted comprehensive acupuncture protocols, nor explored the changes after a complete treatment duration. Thus, the mechanisms of acupuncture effects remain not fully investigated. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the changes in spontaneous brain activity and functional connectivity and provide evidence

Is formal thought disorder in schizophrenia related to structural and functional aberrations in the language network? A systematic review of neuroimaging findings.

Formal thought disorder (FTD) is a core feature of schizophrenia, a marker of illness severity and a predictor of outcome. The underlying neural mechanisms are still a matter of debate. This study aimed at 1) reviewing the literature on the neural correlates of FTD in schizophrenia, and 2) testing the hypothesis that FTD correlates with structural and functional aberrations in the language network. Medline, PsychInfo, and Embase were searched for neuroimaging studies, which applied a clinical measure to assess FTD in adults with schizophrenia and were published in English or German in peer-rev

Functional Neuroimaging as a Biomarker of Non-Invasive Brain Stimulation in Upper Limb Recovery After Stroke: A Systematic Review and Narrative Discussion.

Introduction: Stroke is a leading cause of adult-onset disability. Non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) techniques such as repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), and transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (tVNS) are promising adjuncts to upper limb rehabilitation. The use of functional neuroimaging through task functional MRI (fMRI) or functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) allows the visualisation of cortical activation patterns associated with stroke-related impairment and recovery. The present study comprehensively review

Towards a neurodevelopmental model of bipolar disorder: a critical review of trait- and state-related functional neuroimaging in adolescents and young adults.

Neurodevelopmental mechanisms are increasingly implicated in bipolar disorder (BD), highlighting the importance of their study in young persons. Neuroimaging studies have demonstrated a central role for frontotemporal corticolimbic brain systems that subserve processing and regulation of emotions, and processing of reward in adults with BD. As adolescence and young adulthood (AYA) is a time when fully syndromal BD often emerges, and when these brain systems undergo dynamic maturational changes, the AYA epoch is implicated as a critical period in the neurodevelopment of BD. Functional magnetic
