Overlooked but Serious Gallbladder Disease during Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation: A Retrospective Analysis.

Background: To date, there have been no reports assessing the incidence, risk factors, and clinical outcomes of GB disease in patients receiving ECMO for cardiorespiratory failure. Methods: The medical records of adults (aged > 18 years) who underwent ECMO between May 2010 and October 2019 were retrospectively reviewed. We investigated the prevalence and related factors of GB disease during ECMO therapy, compared clinical outcomes between patients with and without GB disease, and performed propensity-matched analysis. Results: In total, 446 patients were included, and symptomatic GB disease wa

Gallbladder Polyps Increase the Risk of Ischaemic Heart Disease Among Korean Adults.

Background: Gallbladder (GB) polyps and ischaemic heart disease (IHD) share some common risk factors. We investigated the longitudinal effects of gallbladder (GB) polyps, as a surrogate metabolic indicator, on IHD. Methods: We enrolled 19,612 participants from the health risk assessment study (HERAS) and Korean Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service (HIRA) database. The primary outcome was IHD, which consisted of angina pectoris (ICD-10 code I20) or acute myocardial infarction (ICD-10 code I21) that occurred after enrolment into the study. We calculated hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% con

Correlates of gallbladder stones among patients with sickle cell disease: A meta-analysis.

Sickle cell disorders are the most common hemoglobinopathies worldwide. Clinical variability of sickle cell disease (SCD) and susceptibility to its complications have been attributed to hematologic, genetic, and other influencing factors. This review aimed to provide further summary and analyses of the prevalence and factors associated with cholelithiasis among patients with SCD. A systematic database search was conducted in MEDLINE (PubMed), ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, World Health Organization Virtual Health Library, Cochrane Library databases, and System for Information on Gray Literatur

Prognostic value and risk stratification of residual disease in patients with incidental gallbladder cancer.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Given their poor prognosis, patients with residual disease (RD) in the re-resection specimen of an incidental gallbladder carcinoma (IGBC) could benefit from a better selection for surgical treatment. The Gallbladder Cancer Risk Score (GBRS) has been proposed to preoperatively identify RD risk more precisely than T-stage alone. The aim of this study was to assess the prognostic value of RD and to validate the GBRS in a retrospective series of patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A prospectively collected database including 59 patients with IGBC diagnosed from December 1996 to N

Big data and analysis of risk factors for gallbladder disease in the young generation of Korea.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Few studies have examined the risk factors for gallbladder (GB) disease in young adults. This study aimed to evaluate risk factors for GB disease in young adults based on big data in Korea. METHODS: All participants underwent routine checkup at the Korea Medical Institute from June 2014 to May 2015. After excluding 677 individuals with missing information in records, 724,114 individuals (435,635 men, 288,479 women) were finally included. The definition of abnormal GB finding included stones, sludge, polyps, and adenomyomatosis detected using ultrasonography. All statistica

Erectile Dysfunction in Men With Gallbladder Stone Disease: A Nationwide Population-Based Study.

We assessed the risk of erectile dysfunction after the diagnosis of gallbladder stone disease. We identified 9,362 men aged ≥20 years diagnosed with gallbladder stone disease between 2000 and 2011 from Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database as the study cohort, and we randomly selected 9,362 men from the nongallbladder stone disease population by 1:1 frequency-matching with the case cohort based on age, the index date for the diagnosis of gallbladder stone disease, and comorbidities as the control cohort. All subjects were followed until December 31, 2011, for measuring the erect

Is functional gallbladder disease truly increasing? Results from the Rochester Epidemiology Project.

INTRODUCTION: Reports from US administrative databases showed an increase in cholecystectomy rate for functional gallbladder disorder (FGBD), a disease is not well recognized elsewhere. We aimed to identify the incidence and cholecystectomy rate for FGBD in an epidemiologically well-defined and prospectively studied population and compare results to published data. METHODS: After IRB approval, we extracted data from the NIH funded Rochester Epidemiology Project. We used ICD-9 codes (575.8) and (575.9) to identify patients with FGBD from 2000 to 2014. RESULTS: Between 2000 and 2014 we identif

The prevalence of gallbladder stones is higher among patients with chronic kidney disease in Taiwan.

The pathogenesis of gallstone disease is multifactorial. Few studies have focused on gallbladder stones in the chronic kidney disease population in Taiwan. We conducted the current study to determine the prevalence of gallbladder stones in populations with and without chronic kidney disease. This was a hospital-based, cross-sectional study. We retrospectively analyzed the patients receiving periodic health examinations at 1 medical center in Taiwan from 2001 to 2004. In all, 4773 patients were enrolled in the study. Chronic kidney disease was defined as a glomerular filtration rate less than 60

Childbearing, breastfeeding, other reproductive factors and the subsequent risk of hospitalization for gallbladder disease.

BACKGROUND: While parous women are known to be at an increased risk of gallbladder disease, little is known about the effects of other reproductive factors such as breastfeeding, age at menarche and age at menopause. METHODS: The Million Women Study is a prospective cohort study of 1.3 million middle-aged women in England and Scotland recruited from 1996 to 2001. Participants were followed-up by record-linkage for a mean of 6.1 years for admissions to hospital. The adjusted relative risk of hospital admission for cholelithiasis, cholecystitis or cholecystectomy according to parity, breastfeed

Serum ascorbic acid and other correlates of gallbladder disease among US adults.

OBJECTIVES: This study examined the correlates of clinical gallbladder disease among US adults and whether serum ascorbic acid levels are associated with a decreased prevalence of gallbladder disease. METHODS: Cross-sectional analyses of data from the Second National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were conducted. RESULTS: A total of 384 women (8%) and 107 men (3%) reported a history of gallstone disease, and 347 women (7%) and 81 men (2%) reported a history of cholecystectomy. An inverted U-shaped relation was found between serum ascorbic acid level and clinical gallbladder disease

Gallbladder sensitivity to CCK in duodenal ulcer disease, highly selective and truncal vagotomy.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Following truncal vagotomy, a heightened contractile response of the gallbladder to cholecystokinin (CCK) has been reported in patients. We investigated whether the gallbladder responsiveness to the CCK analog cerulein is also affected in patients with a highly selective vagotomy (HSV) and in duodenal ulcer patients, since most patients had truncal vagotomy for recurrent peptic ulcer disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Gallbladder emptying (cholescintigraphy) and plasma cholecystokinin like immunoreactivity (CCK-LI) levels were studied during infusion of graded doses of the CCK a

Elevated serum triglyceride levels may be a key independent predicting factor for gallbladder cancer risk in gallbladder stone disease patients: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Gallbladder stone diseases (GSD) is a main risk factor of gallbladder cancer (GBC). This study aimed to reveal their bridge to metabolic syndrome. MATERIAL/METHOD: The clinical and experimental data of 2210 GBC patients, from 3524 Chinese patients, in our hospital from Jan. 2009 to Dec. 2020 were summarized. The metabolic syndrome indexes, influencing factors for both GBC and GSD, were analyzed by unconditional logistic regression in this case-control study. RESULT: There were significantly higher morbidity of GBC in the overall, GSD and non-GSD with hypertriglyceridemia patients
