Sexual and domestic violence enquiry: A national exploratory survey of asking and telling in sexual health services in the UK.

BACKGROUND: Gender-based violence in the form of domestic and sexual abuse represent a worldwide public health and civil rights issue. Healthcare and sexual health have a central role to play in prevention, particularly in the identification of sexual and domestic violence/abuse within a frontline service in which it often presents. Survivors of sexual violence and abuse commonly pass through sexual health services without being asked about their victimisation. Healthcare should be able to identify survivors, provide first line support, refer to specialist services and link to comprehensive po

Pride-based violence, intoxicated sex and poly-drug use: a vocational school-based study of heterosexual and LGBT students in Bangkok.

BACKGROUND: In Thailand, drug use is widely observed, especially among vocational-school students, who are more inclined to use various types of drugs and to experience pride-based violence (violence based on institutional pride, honor, or on seniority status) than any other groups of students. Drug use contexts differ based on sexual orientation and gender identity (e.g., clubs). This study aims to examine the prevalence and correlates of poly-drug use (the use of at least three types of drugs) among vocational-school students, with a focus on sexual orientation and gender identity. METHODS:

Accelerators to reduce violence, HIV risk, and early pregnancy among adolescents and young people in Namibia: A cross-sectional analysis of the Violence Against Children & Youth Survey.

Our study applied the INSPIRE Framework - the WHO's 2016 technical package of evidence-based interventions for addressing violence against children - to identify accelerators for youth in Namibia. Accelerators are protective factors that contribute toward achieving multiple SDG targets. Using nationally representative data from the 2019 Namibia Violence Against Children & Youth Survey (n = 5167), three hypothesised accelerators (food security, parental support, and gender-equitable attitudes) were investigated for their impact on 12 adolescent outcomes. Associations between the hypothesised ac

Childhood Histories of Family Violence and Adult Intimate Partner Violence Use Among U.S. Military Veterans.

OBJECTIVE: There is ample evidence for associations among childhood family violence and adult intimate partner violence (IPV) use. This study was designed to examine potential differential associations between childhood physical abuse, childhood sexual abuse, witnessing parental IPV, posttraumatic stress symptom (PTSS) severity, and IPV use for men and women veterans. METHOD: Survey data from 825 veterans who participated in a longitudinal multisite investigation of post-9/11 veterans who completed measures of childhood family violence history, PTSS, IPV use and experiences were used. Moderat

The associations of everyday and major discrimination exposure with violence and poor mental health outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Research on discrimination and risks for violence and mental health issues under the pandemic is notably absent. We examined the relative effects of perceived everyday discrimination (e.g., poorer service, disrespectful treatment in a typical week) and major experiences of race-based discrimination (e.g., racial/ethnic discrimination in housing or employment at any point in the lifetime) on experiences of violence and the PHQ-4 assessment of symptoms of depression and anxiety under the pandemic. We analyzed state-representative cross-sectional survey data from California adults (<I>N</I> = 211

Exploration of Experiences and Perpetration of Identity-Based Bullying Among Adolescents by Race/Ethnicity and Other Marginalized Identities.

IMPORTANCE: Race-based discrimination represents an ongoing public health crisis in the US, manifested by wide-ranging disparities in youth health, mental health, and violence exposure. However, studies of racial discrimination often neglect experiences of identity-based bullying (IBB) stemming from other marginalized identities, such as gender identity and sexual orientation. OBJECTIVE: To examine associations between experiences of IBB based on race/ethnicity/national origin and other social identities and youth health, mental health, and violence outcomes. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANT

The effects of husband's alcohol consumption on married women in three low-income areas of Greater Mumbai.

Gender-based violence rooted in norms, socialization practices, structural factors, and policies that underlie men's abusive practices against married women in India is exacerbated by alcohol. The intersection of domestic violence, childhood exposure to alcohol and frustration, which contribute to drinking and its consequences including forced sex is explored through analysis of data obtained from 486 married men living with their wives in a low-income area of Greater Mumbai. SEM shows pathways linking work-related stress, greater exposure to alcohol as a child, being a heavy drinker, and havi

Structural violence: A concept analysis to inform nursing science and practice.

This analysis is meant to elucidate the concept of structural violence and its implications for nursing science and practice. The concept of structural violence, also known as indirect violence, was first identified in the literature by peace researcher Johan Galtung. According to Galtung, structural violence broadly represents harm done to persons and groups through inequitable social, political, or economic structures. Such inequitable structures, such as systemic discrimination based on race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, etc. create conditions within society that directl

Marital violence and women's reproductive health care in Uttar Pradesh, India.

OBJECTIVE: Although the impact of marital violence on women's reproductive health is recognized globally, there is little research on how women's experience of and justification of marital violence in developing country settings is linked to sexually transmitted infection (STI) symptom reporting, and seeking care for the symptoms. METHOD: This study analyzes data on 9,639 currently married women from India's 2006-2007 National Family Health Survey-3 from the Central/Northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. The likelihood of currently married women's reporting STIs or symptoms, and the likeliho

Experiences of Young Women Living in Kibra, Kenya, on HIV Risk and Sexual Violence: A Descriptive Study.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Kenya had seen a significant decline in new HIV infections among most age groups except for young people aged 15-24 years. Young women residing in urban areas are significantly affected by gender-based violence. Guided by the theory of gender and power and postcolonial theory, our descriptive qualitative study sought to understand young women's experiences with HIV risk and the impact of sexual violence before the COVID-19 pandemic. We conducted individual and focus group interviews with 73 young women residing in Kibra, Kenya. Using thematic analysis, interviews

Are experiences of sexual violence related to special needs in patients with substance use disorders? A study in opioid-dependent patients.

A history of sexual violence has been related to more complex treatment needs in patients with substance use disorders (SUD). Most of the existing studies, however, included patients with various types of SUD, did not examine gender differences and focused on a small range of clinical domains. Our sample consisted of opioid-dependent outpatients treated during a three-year period in a German metropolitan region. The analysis was based on a local case register and included all patients for whom information on lifetime sexual violence was available (N=3531; 68.3% males). In a case-control design

Client-Initiated Violence Against Zambian Female Sex Workers: Prevalence and Associations With Behavior, Environment, and Sexual History.

Violence against women is a known risk factor for HIV and affects female sex workers (FSW) in sub-Saharan Africa. Little is known about the magnitude and determinants of violence against FSW in Zambia, where HIV and gender-based violence prevalence are high. We conducted a cross-sectional study, using multivariable logistic regression, to determine the prevalence and correlates of client-initiated physical violence among 419 FSW in Lusaka and Ndola. The prevalence of client-initiated physical violence was 39%. The odds of violence were higher for FSW who: lived in Lusaka, recruited clients fro

Relationship Satisfaction among Plurisexual Young Adults: Understanding the Unique Role of Identity Abuse.

Understanding the link between intimate partner violence and relationship satisfaction is important because of prospective links between this type of satisfaction and mental and physical health. The need to better understand experiences of intimate violence among plurisexual people (those who experience sexual and/or romantic attraction to more than one gender) is highlighted by the fact that they disproportionately experience higher levels of intimate partner violence and report poorer romantic relationship quality than both heterosexual and lesbian/gay people (i.e., monosexual people, or peo

Causal attributions of impulsive and compulsive behaviors.

INTRODUCTION: Aggression, and therefore gender-based violence, can be an impulsive or compulsive behavior, depending on the consumption of alcohol and/or drugs. In Europe, the prevalence of gender-based violence is 16 to 23%. This prevalence shows that there is a need to make further progress in the treatment of aggression against women. Qualitative techniques allow us to understand perceptions and attributions holistically by analyzing what people who commit the crime say, why they say it and how they say it. AIM: To explore the experience of physical and verbal aggression by a partner, depe

Negative consequences of conflict-related sexual violence on survivors: a systematic review of qualitative evidence.

BACKGROUND: Conflicts exacerbate dynamics of power and inequalities through violence normalization, which acts as a facilitator for conflict-related sexual violence. Literature addressing its negative outcomes on survivors is scant. The aim of this systematic review was to analyze the qualitative evidence reported in scientific literature and focusing on the negative consequences of conflict-related sexual violence on victims' physical, psychological, and social dimensions of health in a gender-inclusive and disaggregated form. METHODS: A literature search was conducted on January 13, 2023 on

[Psychological violence against women: What factors increase the risk of this kind of intimate partner abuse?].

Using data from Argentina's National Study on Violence Against Women [Estudio nacional sobre violencias contra las mujeres] carried out in 2015, the article identifies the risk factors that increase women's vulnerability to psychological abuse. Findings show that women who are more prone to be victims of this kind of partner violence are those who are less educated, older, do not earn a wage for their work, live with children at home, are involved in less "formal" long-term relationships, as well as those whose male partners have a lower educational level than their own and/or have alcohol pro

Social network analysis to characterize women victims of violence.

BACKGROUND: In Europe, it is estimated that one third of women had experienced at least one physical or sexual violence after their 15. Taking into account the severe health consequences, the Emergency Department (ED), may offer an opportunity to recognize when an aggression is part of the spectrum of violence. This study applies Social Network analysis (SNA) to ED data in the Lazio region with the objective to identify patterns of diagnoses, within all the ED accesses of women experiencing an aggression, that are signals for gender-based violence against women. We aim to develop a risk assess
