Different target-discrimination times can be followed by the same saccade-initiation timing in different stimulus conditions during visual searches.

The neuronal processes that underlie visual searches can be divided into two stages: target discrimination and saccade preparation/generation. This predicts that the length of time of the prediscrimination stage varies according to the search difficulty across different stimulus conditions, whereas the length of the latter postdiscrimination stage is stimulus invariant. However, recent studies have suggested that the length of the postdiscrimination interval changes with different stimulus conditions. To address whether and how the visual stimulus affects determination of the postdiscriminatio

A computational workflow for assessing drug effects on temporal signaling dynamics reveals robustness in stimulus-specific NFκB signaling.

Single-cell studies of signal transduction have revealed complex temporal dynamics that determine downstream biological function. For example, the stimulus-specific dynamics of the transcription factor NFκB specify stimulus-specific gene expression programs, and loss of specificity leads to disease. Thus, it is intriguing to consider drugs that may restore signaling specificity in disease contexts, or reduce activity but maintain signaling specificity to avoid unwanted side effects. However, while steady-state dose-response relationships have been the focus of pharmacological studies, there ar

Widespread, perception-related information in the human brain scales with levels of consciousness.

How does the human brain generate coherent, subjective perceptions-transforming yellow and oblong visual sensory information into the perception of an edible banana? This is a hard problem. According to the standard viewpoint, processing in groups of dedicated regions-identified as active "blobs" when using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI)-gives rise to perception. Here, we reveal a new organizational concept by discovering that stimulus-specific information distributed throughout the whole brain. Using fMRI, we found stimulus-specific information across the neocortex, even in voxe

Breathing rhythm-generation mechanism in the adult lamprey (Lampetra japonica).

To examine the breathing rhythm-generating mechanism, effects of brain sectioning, immobilization, and electric stimulation on medullary respiratory activities were investigated in adult lampreys. The rostral part of the medulla (rostrally to the level of the caudal border of "internal acoustic pore") is not indispensable for breathing rhythm-generation. The rostral part itself, however, was also capable of driving periodic movement of only the first branchial baskets. After immobilization, respiratory discharges continued without changing their pattern, indicating that respiratory afferents d

Generalisation of ethanol with drug mixtures containing a positive modulator of the GABA(A) receptor and an NMDA antagonist.

Ethanol is thought to produce its discriminative stimulus effect by actions on two or more neurotransmitter systems. To test this idea further, rats were trained to discriminate mixtures of two drugs from vehicle in two-lever procedures with food reinforcers presented on a tandem variable-interval fixed ratio schedule. After drug-appropriate responding with the training mixtures reached 85%, generalisation to ethanol was examined in extinction tests. Rats trained to discriminate a mixture of chlordiazepoxide (5.0 mg/kg, s. c.) plus dizocilpine (0.08 mg/kg, i.p.) yielded a mean of 76% drug-appr

Visual evoked responses in multiple sclerosis: comparison of two methods for pattern reversal.

Visual evoked responses have been elicited by reversal of a black and white checkerboard pattern and also by a display of light-emitting diodes (LED) generating a reversal of a pattern of illuminated red circular areas. In a control group the LED display produced responses of lower amplitude and shorter latency compared to responses to checkerboard stimulation. In patients with a definite or probable diagnosis of multiple sclerosis the stimulators were equally effective in evoking pathological responses; in patients with a possible but less certain diagnosis abnormal responses were found in a

Generating Natural Neural Response in Visual Neuroprosthetics Using the Artificial Bee Colony Algorithm.

A significant challenge that hampered visual prosthetic systems is its ability to produce a meaningful perception of vision. It is hypothesised that mimicking the natural spiking pattern of the visual cortex would lead to a more natural perception of vision. In this study, an optimisation algorithm, namely the Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) algorithm, is utilised to automatically generate a stimulus waveform to produce a response that best matches a target neural pattern. An in silico model of realistic retinal ganglion cells (RGC) was used to simulate neural responses in a visual prosthesis and

Neuronal correlates of inferred motion in primate posterior parietal cortex.

For many types of behaviours, it is necessary to monitor the position or movement of objects that are temporarily occluded. The primate posterior parietal cortex contains neurons that are active during visual guidance tasks: in some cases, even if the visual target disappears transiently. It has been proposed that activity of this sort could be related to current or planned eye movements, but it might also provide a more generalized abstract representation of the spatial disposition of targets, even when they are not visible. We have recorded from monkey posterior parietal cortex while the ani

Synthesis and perceptual scaling of high-resolution naturalistic images using Stable Diffusion.

Naturalistic scenes are of key interest for visual perception, but controlling their perceptual and semantic properties is challenging. Previous work on naturalistic scenes has frequently focused on collections of discrete images with considerable physical differences between stimuli. However, it is often desirable to assess representations of naturalistic images that vary along a continuum. Traditionally, perceptually continuous variations of naturalistic stimuli have been obtained by morphing a source image into a target image. This produces transitions driven mainly by low-level physical fe

Physiological response to ECT stimulus dose.

For a physiological effect to be useful to regulate the electrical stimulus dose used in electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), it must show sensitivity to the stimulus dose. In the analogy of using blood drug concentration to regulate drug dosage, this concentration must be sensitive to the dose. Accordingly, we examined the sensitivity of several physiological effects to ECT stimulus dose. Previously no substantial sensitivity of physiological effects was found when generally effective ECT methods were used. EEG post-ictal suppression, recruitment phase duration, wave form regularity and spike-and

Greater Movement-Type Selectivity in the Striatum Than in the Cerebellum during Rhythm Processing.

During rhythm perception, accurate processing of temporal structure is essential for predicting when a stimulus will occur and for preparing appropriate actions. Subcortical circuits, particularly the cerebellum and basal ganglia, are known to play central roles in temporal processing, yet how neuronal activity in these structures supports sensory prediction and action preparation remains unclear. Specifically, it is unknown whether timing-related signals during rhythm perception are linked to specific movements or are movement invariant. To address this issue, we recorded single-neuron activi

Modulation of perceived time caused by stimulus clarity in object recognition.

This study explored the modulation of perceived time based on subjective visual perception, mainly focusing on object recognition. Unlike physical time, psychological time is subject to various influences, such as attention and stimulus characteristics. We conducted two experiments using images comprising dots to systematically vary stimulus clarity and visual recognizability. Experiment 1 revealed that perceived time was longer when an object was identifiable within the stimulus. Experiment 2 extended this finding by offering three response options related to object recognition and naming. Th

Object comparison in the lateral intraparietal area.

We can search for and locate specific objects in our environment by looking for objects with similar features. Object recognition involves stimulus similarity responses in ventral visual areas and task-related responses in prefrontal cortex. We tested whether neurons in the lateral intraparietal area (LIP) of posterior parietal cortex could form an intermediary representation, collating information from object-specific similarity map representations to allow general decisions about whether a stimulus matches the object being looked for. We hypothesized that responses to stimuli would correlate

The discriminative stimulus properties of zolpidem, a novel imidazopyridine hypnotic.

Zolpidem is a non-benzodiazepine hypnotic drug which displaces benzodiazepines from their binding sites in different brain structures. Previous work has demonstrated several differences between zolpidem and benzodiazepines, including differences between the stimulus properties of zolpidem and chlordiazepoxide. In the present study the discriminative stimulus properties of zolpidem were analysed by training rats to discriminate between this drug and saline. It was found that stimulus control developed readily with 2 mg/kg but not with 1 mg/kg zolpidem. The effect was dose-related, had a short d

Frequency of headache is related to sensitization: a population study.

Central sensitization is thought to play an important role in the chronification of tension-type headache and in the maintenance and exacerbation of the migraine attack. It has, however, almost exclusively been studied in highly selected patients from headache clinics. The aim of the present study was to evaluate pain perception in primary headaches in the general population. Stimulus-response functions for pressure versus pain, tenderness and pressure pain thresholds were studied in a random sample of 523 adults from the general population. All results were controlled for the effects of age a

Identifying pain perceptual biases related to fear of pain and threat in a pain-free sample.

BACKGROUND: The association between fear of pain (FOP) and pain intensity has remained unclear. This study aimed to examine whether highly pain-fearful participants showed pain perceptual biases to general painful stimulus or to specific threatening painful stimulus. METHODS: Fifty-nine undergraduates were recruited into low (n = 30) and high (n = 29) FOP groups and completed a threatening pain perception task with two tasks. Task 1 assessed pain perceptual biases by calculating the percentage of near-threshold pain stimulus judged as painful and assessing the average pain intensity ratings t

The Effect of Otoacoustic Emission Stimulus Level on the Strength and Detectability of the Medial Olivocochlear Reflex.

OBJECTIVES: Previous work demonstrates the importance of a high signal to noise ratio (SNR) when using transient evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAEs) to assay the medial olivocochlear reflex (MOCR). Increasing stimulus level provides one means to increase TEOAE SNR. However, this may come at the expense of a smaller MOCR effect. It is not clear whether the gain in SNR associated with the use of higher stimulus levels outweighs the disadvantage of a potentially smaller MOCR effect. The present study investigated the strength and detectability of the MOCR when assayed using TEOAEs at different

The effects of general anesthetics on norepinephrine release from isolated rat cortical nerve terminals.

UNLABELLED: Intravenous and volatile general anesthetics inhibit norepinephrine (NE) release from sympathetic neurons and other neurosecretory cells. However, the actions of general anesthetics on NE release from central nervous system (CNS) neurons are unclear. We investigated the effects of representative IV and volatile anesthetics on [(3)H]NE release from isolated rat cortical nerve terminals (synaptosomes). Purified synaptosomes prepared from rat cerebral cortex were preloaded with [(3)H]NE and superfused with buffer containing pargyline (a monoamine oxidase inhibitor) and ascorbic acid (
