Association of trauma from occlusion with localized gingival recession in mandibular anterior teeth.

BACKGROUND: There have been passing references in history that excessive occlusal forces might be a causative factor in gingival recession. The purpose of the present cross-sectional study was to explore the role of trauma from occlusion on the development of gingival recession. METHODS: Three hundred patients reporting to the department of Periodontics were screened for the presence of gingival recession in the lower incisors. A single trained examiner carried out clinical examination for signs of trauma from occlusion, such as fremitus test, presence of wear facets and mobility. The data we

Severe gingival recession caused by traumatic occlusion and mucogingival stress: a case report.

Gingival recession is displacement of the soft tissue margin apically leading to root surface exposure. Tooth malpositions, high muscle attachment, frenal pull have been associated with gingival tissue recession. Occlusal trauma is defined as injury resulting in tissue changes within the attachment apparatus as a result of occlusal forces. Trauma from occlusion may cause a shift in tooth position and the direction of the movement depends on the occlusal force. We present the clinical and radiological findings and the limitation of periodontal treatment of a severe gingival recession in a case

Current trends in gingival recession coverage--part I: the tunnel connective tissue graft.

The recession of the gingiva is increasingly becoming a more prominent condition in the oral health of many patients and should be treated at its earliest detection. The multifactorial etiology, decision modality, and current trends followed in the treatment of gingival recession are discussed in this presentation. The correction of Class I and II gingival recessions are presented as a means of minimizing surgical trauma and achieving predictable aesthetic results. Part II of this discussion will present alternative techniques in treating gingival recession.

Treatment of gingival recession: comparison of two techniques of subepithelial connective tissue graft.

BACKGROUND: The increasing interest in esthetics and the subsequent need to solve related problems such as hypersensitivity and root caries have favored the development of many surgical procedures that permit the coverage of exposed roots. This clinical study was conducted to examine the coverage of gingival recession defects, where two different subepithelial connective tissue graft (SCTG) techniques (Langer and Langer and modified tunnel) were used. METHODS: Thirty one patients (21 females and 10 males), each contributing Miller Class I and II gingival recessions, were selected. Recession d

Oral piercing and gingival recession: review of the literature and a case report.

A young adult developed severe gingival recessions and radiographic signs of trauma to the periodontium after wearing a tongue barbell and a lip stud. Oral body art (piercing) can be hazardous to the periodontium; nevertheless, patients inclined to such practices do not see them as health hazards and are very reluctant to remove them.

Treatment of gingival recession with titanium reinforced barrier membranes versus connective tissue grafts.

It was the aim of this study to compare barrier membrane therapy with connective tissue grafts in the treatment of recession defects. Fifteen patients with 2 paired vestibular recession defects participated in the study. After thorough scaling and root surface conditioning with tetracycline-HCl, defects were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 treatment modalities. In one of the defects, a trapezoidal mucoperiosteal flap was prepared, and a titanium reinforced expanded polytetrafluoroethylene membrane was adapted to the defect and secured by a sling suture. The membrane was subsequently covered by a c

Does orthodontic proclination of lower incisors in children and adolescents cause gingival recession?

In this investigation we sought to assess the effect of orthodontic proclination of lower incisors in children and adolescents with respect to the possible development of gingival recession. Ninety-eight children with a mean +/- SD start-of-treatment age of 12.8 +/- 1.4 years, treated with the Herbst appliance, were surveyed, for a total of 392 lower incisors. Lateral head films, dental casts and intraoral photographs were analyzed with respect to the degree of orthodontic proclination, crown height, and gingival recession. In all subjects, Herbst treatment resulted in varying degrees of lower

A novel approach to managing gingival recession in protruded roots: a case report.

This case report presents an innovative approach to managing severe isolated gingival recession associated with root protrusion beyond bone boundaries in a 28-year-old female patient. The patient, who had a history of orthodontic treatment for a 5-year-period, displayed significant gingival recession at the lower right central incisor. Conventional orthodontic repositioning was declined by the patient, leading to the adoption of an alternative treatment strategy. A combination of odontoplasty to trim the protruding root (~1 mm) and a connective tissue graft was employed. The procedure involved

Gingival Recession in a Case of Anterior Crossbite with Angle Class I Relationship.

Anterior crossbite is one of the most common orthodontic problems encountered during the dental eruption. Usually, the anomaly becomes evident during mixed dentition, as a result of the disharmony between the dental, skeletal and functional components of the orthognathic system. As complications, the presence of the anterior dental cross bite can lead to the thinning of the vestibular alveolar process of the lower incisors and gingival recession. Periodontal changes could recede spontaneously if orthodontic treatment is applied early, in the presence of good oral hygiene. In this case, gingiva

Collagen (Col) is a naturally available material and is widely used in the tissue engineering and medical field owing to its high biocompatibility and malleability. Promising results on the use of Col were observed in the periodontal application and many attempts have been carried out to inculcate Col for gingival recession (GR). Col is found to be an excellent provisional bioscaffold for the current treatment in GR. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to scrutinize an overview of the reported Col effect focusing on in vitro, in vivo, and clinical trials in GR application. A comprehensive lite

Quantitative measures of gingival recession and the influence of gender, race, and attrition.

BACKGROUND: Gingival recession in dentitions with otherwise healthy periodontium is a common occurrence in adults. Recession is clinically measured using a periodontal probe to the nearest millimeter. The aim of this study is to establish quantitative measures of recession, the clinical crown height, and a new measure the gingival margin-papillae measurement. The latter is seen as the shortest apico-coronal distance measured from the depth of the gingival margin to a line connecting the tips of the two adjacent papillae. METHODS: Measurements on all teeth up to and including the first molar w
