Gastrointestinal motility in microgravity: a critical review of multi-level mechanisms and model-dependent effects.

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal motility disturbances rank among the most frequently reported medical complications of spaceflight. Astronauts experience delayed gastric emptying, erratic small intestinal transit and reduced colonic propulsion. The underlying mechanisms are multifactorial. Microgravity alters intra-abdominal physical mechanics, disrupts autonomic and enteric neural circuits, shifts gastrointestinal hormone secretion profiles, inflicts oxidative stress upon effector cells, and perturbs gut microbial communities. Cross-model comparisons reveal substantial disagreement, suggesting t

Mechanosensing and mechanochemical transduction: how is mechanical energy sensed and converted into chemical energy in an extracellular matrix?

Gravity plays a central role in vertebrate development and evolution. Gravitational forces acting on mammalian tissues cause the net muscle forces required for locomotion to be higher on earth than on a body subjected to a microgravitational field. As body mass increases during development, the musculoskeleton must be able to adapt by increasing the size of its functional units. Thus mechanical forces required to do the work (mechanical energy) of locomotion must be sensed by cells and converted into chemical energy (synthesis of new tissue). Extracellular matrices (ECMs) are multicomponent ti

Investigating the orthotic effect of a passive gravity-compensated exoskeletal device on upper-limb function in people with multiple sclerosis: a pilot cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a neurodegenerative disorder causing lower and upper-limb (UL) impairments and significantly affecting independence. Current assistive technologies for UL rehabilitation in People with MS (PwMS) rely on actuated robotic systems, which present high costs and complexity. Passive gravity-compensated exoskeletons represent a promising alternative; however, their functional benefits remain underexplored. This study aimed to redesign and evaluate the orthotic effect of a passive gravity-compensated exoskeleton device in supporting upper-limb function in PwMS.

Subdiaphragmatic venous hemodynamics in patients with biventricular and Fontan circulation after diaphragm plication.

OBJECTIVE: Diaphragm paralysis owing to phrenic nerve injury can result in significant morbidity in children undergoing surgical management of congenital cardiac defects. Diaphragm plication is the accepted therapy for diaphragm paralysis. We have investigated subdiaphragmatic venous hemodynamics in patients with biventricular and Fontan circulation after diaphragm plication. METHODS: Doppler ultrasound was used to evaluate flows in the hepatic vein, portal vein, and subhepatic inferior vena cava under respiratory monitoring and with a tilt table. Twenty-nine patients with biventricular circu

Stretching and Compressing Capillary Bridges on Hydrophilic, Hydrophobic, and Liquid-Infused Surfaces.

Aqueous capillary liquid bridges are ubiquitous in nature and in technological processes. Here, we comparatively investigate capillary bridges formed between three distinct types of surfaces: (i) hydrophilic glass, (ii) hydrophobic dichlorodimethylsilane (DMS)-functionalized glass, and (iii) liquid-infused (LIS). We combine experimental measurements and computer simulations of the capillary bridges' evolution upon changes in the gap size between the surfaces, deriving in each case the bridge geometry and the resulting capillary force. The results, also compared with predictions from the existi

Impact of Chronic Pain on Use-Dependent Plasticity: Corticomotor Excitability and Motor Representation in Musicians With and Without Pain.

Long-term musical training induces adaptive changes in the functional representation of the motor cortex. It is unknown if the maladaptive plasticity associated with chronic pain, frequently affecting trained musicians, may alter the use-dependent plasticity in the motor cortex. This study investigated the interaction between adaptive and maladaptive plasticity in the motor pathways, in particular how chronic pain influences long-term use-dependent plasticity. Using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), corticospinal excitability was assessed by measuring the amplitude of the motor-evoked p

The wavy growth 3 E3 ligase family controls the gravitropic response in Arabidopsis roots.

Regulation of the root growth pattern is an important control mechanism during plant growth and propagation. To better understand alterations in root growth direction in response to environmental stimuli, we have characterized an Arabidopsis thaliana mutant, wavy growth 3 (wav3), whose roots show a short-pitch pattern of wavy growth on inclined agar medium. The wav3 mutant shows a greater curvature of root bending in response to gravity, but a smaller curvature in response to light, suggesting that it is a root gravitropism-enhancing mutation. This wav3 phenotype also suggests that enhancement

Digital Twin Modeling for Landslide Risk Scenarios in Mountainous Regions.

Background: Rainfall-induced landslides are a widespread and destructive geological hazard that resist precise prediction. They pose serious threats to human lives and property, ecological stability, and socioeconomic development. Methods: To address the challenges in mitigating rainfall-induced landslides in high-altitude mountainous regions, this study proposes a digital twin framework that couples multiple physical fields and is based on the spherical discrete element method. Results: Two-dimensional simulations identify a trapezoidal stress distribution with inward-increasing stress. The s

Levodopa-induced dyskinesia provokes inflexible head-pelvis coordination during standing in Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: To achieve postural control, individuals must orient their body segments to each other and maintain equilibrium with gravity. However, levodopa, the standard and most effective medication for the symptomatic treatment of Parkinson's disease (PD), also increases postural sway and head instability in people with levodopa-induced dyskinesia (LID). LID is characterized by involuntary, uncontrollable movements occurring after levodopa intake. This study investigated the effect of LID on body segment coordination while standing in PD. METHODS: People with PD (13 with LID, 12 without LID

Toward self-sustaining membrane filtration via manipulating the membrane-surface ecosystem.

Biofouling-induced membrane contamination severely limits the application of membrane filtration systems. Regulating biofilm formation on membrane surfaces can facilitate the development of water channels and help establish a dynamic balance between foulant deposition and biodegradation. In this study, an activated carbon fiber (ACF) barrier and a biofiltration-integrated ACF barrier (BF_ACF) were employed to evaluate their effects on the performance of a gravity-driven membrane (GDM) ultrafiltration (UF) system. The results showed that ACF and BF_ACF, significantly improved dissolved organic

Iron deficiency anemia: an early clinical presentation of cytomegalovirus-induced hemorrhagic colitis in chronic myeloid leukemia patients under dasatinib treatment.

Dasatinib is a second-generation tyrosine kinase inhibitor employed for chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) treatment that achieves high rates of prolonged and complete molecular responses (MR). Among the adverse effects reported, it has been associated with hemorrhagic complications, mainly due to its inhibiting effects on platelet functions. In addition, immune alterations induced by dasatinib may elevate the risk of bleeding and cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection, particularly in the gastrointestinal tract, thus contributing to the development of hemorrhagic colitis. In this case report, we highlig

Use of an anti-gravity treadmill in the rehabilitation of the operated achilles tendon: a pilot study.

Achilles surgical patients were evaluated using an "anti-gravity" Alter-G (AG) treadmill that allows for reduction of weightbearing pressure on the lower extremity. We studied our hypothesis, which was based on our prior clinical findings, that being able to run on the AG treadmill at 85% of body weight is sufficient to clear patients to run with full body weight outside. Patients undergoing Achilles tendon rupture or insertional repair surgery were prospectively studied. They were compared with a control group that had similar surgeries and a similar rehabilitation program during the same tim

Evaluation of 99MTC-diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid renal scintigram curves in normal dogs after induction of diuresis.

The normal 99mTc-diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) renal scintigram curve has 3 distinct phases; an arterial phase followed by progressive uptake and subsequent excretion from the kidney. In dogs with X-linked hereditary nephritis, a distinct flattening of the renal scintigram curve has been observed prior to any decline in glomerular filtration rate (GFR). The cause of this shape change is not known, however, it coincided with decreased urine-specific gravity and thus might be related to polyuria. To further evaluate this possibility, we assessed whether diuresis without concurrent re

[Maternal perception of dehydration in children with diarrhea. A study on agreement with clinical diagnosis].

The mother's perception of signs and symptoms of dehydration in children under three years of age was studied and compared with the medical classification. The study was carried out in a children's hospital in the city of Rio de Janeiro, among children hospitalized with diarrhoea between January, 1987 and February, 1988. The number of excretions and of vomitings, thirst and condition of eyes constituted the signs and symptoms most frequently reported by mothers. However, they had difficulty in judging the amount of urine, humidity of mouth and tongue and turgidity of the skin. These signs were

Soviet experiments aimed at investigating the influence of space flight factors on the physiology of animals and man.

Results are given of biological experiments on space ship-satellites II, III, IV and V, and of scientific investigations made during the flights of Cosmonauts Gagarin and Titov aboard space ships Vostok I and Vostok II. Physiological reactions to the action of the flight stress-factors are not of a pathological character. In the post-flight period no alterations in health conditions of either cosmonauts or animals were observed. At the same time some peculiarities which were revealed while analyzing physiological reactions and a number of biological indices require further investigations. The

EMG-activity and muscular performance of lower leg during stretch-shortening cycle after cooling.

To test the effect of cooling on EMG-activity of muscles working as an agonist and antagonist in the lower leg, 12 men dressed in shorts and jogging shoes performed a drop-jump exercise after 60 min exposures to 27 degrees C and 10 degrees C. Cooling decreased mean skin temperature 5.6 +/- 0.4 degrees C (mean +/- SD, P < 0.001), whereas rectal temperature was unaffected. The muscle temperature measured from m. gastrocnemius medialis decreased 4.1 +/- 0.3 degrees C (P < 0.01) at the depth of 30 mm below skin surface. To find the optimal stretching velocity for potentiation of elastic energy, th

Variations in Urinary Microbiota on a Short-Duration Space Mission to the International Space Station.

INTRODUCTION: Space travel exposes crew to substantial stressors, which may potentially alter their microbiome and be detrimental to their health and safety. We hypothesize that urinary microbiota is altered during a short-duration spaceflight to the International Space Station (ISS). METHODS: Urine samples were collected from 4 male crew members. One crew member provided samples while on orbit on the ISS using a urine collection kit (UCK) designed for low-gravity environments. This crew member also provided paired mid-stream and UCK samples on Earth prelaunch and on return for direct compari
