BACKGROUND: To explore the potential of End-of-life discussion (EoLD) as alleviating bereaved caregiver's psychological distress after bereavement, this study aimed to examine the association between EoLD and bereaved family's psychological distress across five major illnesses of death; cancer, heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, pneumonia, and kidney failure.
METHODS: This cross-sectional, nationwide mortality follow-back survey selected participants from death certificates and received responses via postal mail. EoLD with either physician or patients and the understanding of illness was

Background: Most evidence on grief and bereavement interventions originates from Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic (WEIRD) populations, raising concerns about the generalizability and cultural relevance of existing findings in diverse global contexts. Individuals confronted with the death of a close person, particularly in cases of sudden or potentially traumatic loss, may be at increased risk of adverse psychological and physical health outcomes, highlighting the importance of effective interventions. This study aimed to synthesize evidence on the effectiveness of grief

CONTEXT: While most bereaved can navigate a death-related loss, some face persistent and disabling challenges, a condition known as Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD). Early identification of PGD can prevent adverse health outcomes. The effectiveness of healthcare providers' clinical intuition versus relatives' self-report surveys in estimating the risk of developing PGD remains uncertain.
OBJECTIVES: The study evaluates the accuracy of healthcare providers' subjective risk estimates and self-reported surveys from relatives, conducted close to the cancer patient's death, in predicting ICD-11 PGD

BACKGROUND: Anticipatory grief (AG) is a common experience that affects caregivers of patients with chronic illnesses, particularly Alzheimer's disease. Cognitive disorders leading to social death produce a greater impact on the relationship, and thus on AG, than physical disorders.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to examine the prevalence and severity of AG in caregivers of patients with major neurocognitive disorder due to Alzheimer's disease (MNCD-AD) compared to hematological malignancies and to identify the characteristics associated with AG.
METHODS: A total of 132 dyads (patie

We examined perceptions of individuals grieving the loss of a family member to incarceration. Participants (N = 1095) were randomized to a vignette that varied by race-ethnicity, crime type, and grief trajectory to assess their perceptions. Results indicated: (1) participants perceived prolonged grief as less appropriate than resilience; (2) Black family members grieving someone who committed a violent crime as more appropriate compared to White family members; and (3) women endorsed both grief trajectories as more appropriate and indicated greater comfort supporting the family member. Lastly,

The objectives of the present study were to adapt a grief intervention program to family caregivers of patients with dementia, and assess its effectiveness in improving the symptoms of grief and other health-related variables. The intervention was based on Shear and Bloom's grief intervention program, with the necessary adaptations for use in the grieving process for a family member's illness. A total of 52 family caregivers of individuals with dementia participated. They were evaluated using a battery of self-report measures assessing grief, overload, resilience, post-traumatic growth, experi

This study examined Swedish suicide bereaved individuals' use of different resources in their grief work and how they value these resources. The material consisted of a web-based survey, which was analyzed with quantitative methods. The results showed that the psychosocial ill-health was severe among the suicide bereaved participants and that a majority used digital resources in their grief work. The propensity to engage in online support groups or memorial websites was not predicted by the severity of psychosocial consequences following the suicide. However, multiple regressions showed that h

INTRODUCTION: Complicated grief (CG) has been the subject of increasing attention in the past decades but its relationship with separation anxiety disorder (SEPAD) is still controversial. The aim of the current study was to explore the prevalence and clinical significance of adult SEPAD in a sample of help-seeking individuals with CG.
METHODS: 151 adults with CG, enrolled in a randomized controlled trial comparing the effectiveness of (CG) treatment to that of interpersonal therapy, were assessed by means of the Inventory of Complicated Grief (ICG), the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-I

INTRODUCTION: Studies of effective psychotherapy for individuals suffering from the effects of prolonged grief disorder (PGD) are scarce. This paper describes the protocol for an evaluation of a metacognitive therapy programme designed specifically for PGD, to reduce the psychological distress and loss of functioning resulting from bereavement.
METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The proposed trial comprises three phases. Phase 1 consists of a review of the literature and semistructured interviews with key members of the target population to inform the development of a metacognitive therapy programme for P

Recent studies have suggested that the vulnerability to complicated grief (CG) may be rooted in insecure attachment styles developed in childhood. The aim of this study was to examine the etiologic relevance of childhood separation anxiety (CSA) to the onset of CG relative to major depressive disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, and generalized anxiety disorder in bereaved individuals. The Structured Clinical Interview for the DSM-IV, Inventory of Complicated Grief-Revised, and CSA items from the Panic Agoraphobic Spectrum Questionnaire were administered to 283 recently bereaved community-

BACKGROUND: Complicated grief has been described as a diagnosis candidate for DSM-V. On the basis of the stress response theory, Horowitz et al. [Am J Psychiatry 154 (1997) 904-10] characterized complicated grief as a combination of sustained intrusion, avoidance, and maladaptation symptoms following the loss of a close person. This study aimed at evaluating diagnostic criteria based on the stress response model of complicated grief.
METHODS: We administered a symptom list derived from Horowitz et al.'s operationalization to a sample of bereaved persons and evaluated the psychometric properti

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to understand how MAiDHouse's services shape the experiences of grief and bereavement.
DESIGN: This was a qualitative study with semi-structured interviews. Interview transcripts were coded in duplicate and then analysed with a content-analysis approach through MaxQDA. We developed themes deductively based on a previously published framework and inductively from the data.
SETTING: MAiDHouse is a community-based, national, non-profit organisation and registered charity that provides those eligible to receive medical assistance in dying (MAiD) with a suppo

OBJECTIVE: Complications in neurosurgery are virtually inevitable due to the specialty's high-stakes nature. The emotional impact of these events on neurosurgeons is profound, yet little is known about how surgeons cope across different healthcare and cultural systems. Understanding these coping mechanisms is critical to support well-being and reduce burnout. Hence, the authors aimed to characterize the emotional and behavioral responses of neurosurgeons to complications and to examine differences in coping strategies between practitioners in Europe and the US.
METHODS: The authors conducted

BACKGROUND: Early gestational loss is a common event, yet its emotional and social impact is often underestimated. From the earliest weeks of pregnancy, many women develop a psychological bond with the baby and an emerging maternal identity. When miscarriage occurs, the loss is often perceived as the death of a child rather than a minor clinical episode, resulting in disenfranchised grief.
AIM: To understand the emotional and social experiences of women following early gestational loss.
METHODS: An interpretative phenomenological qualitative design was employed with a purposive sample of 17

BACKGROUND: Attachment style is widely recognized as influential in shaping responses to bereavement and prolonged grief disorder (PGD). Although theorized extensively, empirical clarity regarding how attachment styles specifically impact PGD symptoms and therapeutic implications remains limited. This study aimed to identify cognitive-behavioral mechanisms linking attachment styles to PGD symptoms.
METHODS: Data were collected from a community sample of 695 bereaved adults. Network analysis explored interactions between attachment styles (anxious and avoidant) and various cognitive-behavioral

BackgroundApproximately 20% of hospice patients in the US are discharged alive, often due to Medicare regulations. Such discharges are frequently perceived by caregivers as abandonment or expulsion, especially when they occur without follow-up or planning for care transition.MethodsThis study explored caregiver experiences with live hospice discharge through 2 narrative interviews and institutional data from a Midwest medical center (January 2020 through December 2022). Caregiver stories were analyzed thematically to identify emotional and logistical challenges. Retrospective patient data were

INTRODUCTION: Grief associated with bereavement is a multidimensional psychological, physiological and behavioural response to the loss of loved ones. Bereaved individuals may experience physical distress, separation anxiety, intense yearning and cognitive confusion, with an increased risk of adverse physical and mental health outcomes, including death. Currently, various tools are used to measure grief in bereaved adults; however, these tools show significant differences in their cultural context and quality of development. Psychometric properties, including reliability, validity and responsi

Chronic pain and prolonged grief disorder (PGD) share emotional, cognitive, and motivational components related to significant loss. This cross-sectional study examines whether individuals with chronic pain present symptoms of PGD and whether time since diagnosis plays a role in psychological deterioration. Thirty patients with chronic primary low back pain (CPLBP) and thirty healthy controls were recruited. The Inventory of Complicated Grief-Revised, the Numeric Pain Rating Scale, the Beck Depression Inventory-II, the Beck Anxiety Inventory, and the 5-level EQ-5D version were used. The result

Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD) was recently added to ICD-11 and DSM-5-TR. Depression and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) are frequent comorbidities, but findings regarding comorbid somatoform disorder and personality disorders remain mixed and studies with severely impaired patients are scarce. It was therefore the objective of the present study to examine comorbidities of PGD in a bereaved inpatient psychiatric sample. We assessed N = 101 bereaved inpatients in a psychiatric hospital with clinical interviews and self-report questionnaires. We calculated differences between patients with
