Impact of mild versus moderate intensity aerobic walking exercise training on markers of bone metabolism and hand grip strength in moderate hemophilic A patients.

BACKGROUND: Patients with hemophilia A have low bone density than healthy controls. It is now widely recognized that physical activity and sports are beneficial for patients with hemophilia. OBJECTIVE: To compare the effects of mild and moderate intensity treadmill walking exercises on markers of bone metabolism and hand grip strength in male patients with moderate hemophilia A. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fifty male patients with moderate hemophilia, and age range from 25 to 45 years. The subjects were randomly assigned into 2 equal groups; the first group (A) received moderate intensity aerobic

Antibodies to cyclic citrullinated protein and erythrocyte sedimentation rate predict hand bone loss in patients with rheumatoid arthritis of short duration: a longitudinal study.

INTRODUCTION: Radiographic progression in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has in several studies been shown to be predicted by serological markers widely used in daily clinical practice. The objective of this longitudinal study was to examine if these serological markers also predict hand bone mineral density (BMD) loss in patients with RA of short disease duration. METHODS: 163 patients with RA of short disease duration (2.4 years) were included and followed longitudinally. Antibodies to cyclic citrullinated protein (anti-CCP), rheumatoid factor (RF), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), and C-re

Final height prediction of girls at menarche: a combined model using left hand and wrist bone age, knee radiomic scores, and clinical characteristics.

BACKGROUND: Accurate final height prediction for girls with menarche is important, yet traditional Greulich-Pyle (GP) and Bayley-Pinneau predictions based on left hand-wrist bone age (BA) and target height demonstrate limited accuracy. This study aims to develop a method to more accurately predict final height. METHODS: One hundred and seventy-three girls with menarche from August 2018 to June 2023 were analyzed retrospectively. BAs in Greulich and Pyle and Hoerr knee atlases were evaluated. Knee radiomic features were extracted using PyRadiomics; least absolute shrinkage and selection operat

17p13.3 genomic rearrangement in a Chinese family with split-hand/foot malformation with long bone deficiency: report of a complicated duplication with marked variation in phenotype.

BACKGROUND: Split hand/foot malformation (SHFM) is a genetically heterogeneous limb malformation with variable expressivity. SHFM with tibia or femur aplasia is called SHFM with long bone deficiency (SHFLD). 17p13.3 duplications containing BHLHA9 are associated with SHFLD. Cases with variable SHFLD phenotype and different 17p13.3 duplicated regions are reported. The severity of long bone defect could not be simply explained by BHLHA9 overdosage or 17p13.3 duplication. METHODS: A four-generation Chinese SHFM family was recruited. Three family members have long bone defects, one male was severe

Growth and shaping of metacarpal and carpal cartilage anlagen: application of morphometry to the development of short and long bone. A study of human hand anlagen in the fetal period.

A histological and morphometric analysis of human metacarpal and carpal anlagen between the 16th and 22nd embryonic weeks was carried out with the aim of studying the establishment of the respective anlage architecture. No differences in the pattern of growth were documented between the peripheral and central zones of the metacarpal epiphyses and those of the carpals. The regulation of longitudinal growth in long bone anlagen occurred in the transition zone between the epiphysis and the diaphysis (homologous to the metaphyseal growth plate cartilage in more advanced developmental stage of the

Inadequate soft tissue coverage and bone loss/comminution are the typical risk factors of surgical site infection in open fractures of the hand: A nomogram prediction model.

BACKGROUND: Different from other parts of long bone fractures, surgical site infections (SSI) often occurs in open fractures of the hand (OFH) due to the anatomical characteristics and injury mechanisms. Our aim of the study is to investigate the particular risk factors of SSI after emergency surgery in OFH and develop a prediction nomogram model. METHODS: In our traumatic center, patients with OFH not less than 18 years old were retrieved between October 2020 and April 2024. We excluded patients with other fractures, non-traumatic fractures or surgery before admission. The data of these pati

Quantitative power Doppler signal assessment in the subchondral bone region of the metacarpophalangeal joint is an effective predictor of radiographic progression in the hand of rheumatoid arthritis: a pilot study.

Ultrasonography is useful for assessment of synovitis in the hand of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients. The aim of this study was to investigate the predictive value of the quantitative power Doppler (PD) signal assessment in the subchondral bone region of the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint in patients with RA showing radiographic progression of the hand by comparing with those of previously reported scoring systems. Twenty-two patients (20 women) with RA who underwent power Doppler ultrasonography (PDUS) of the bilateral one to five MCP joints at baseline were included in the study. Radiogr

Epithelioid and Spindle Cell Hemangioma: Clinicopathologic Analysis of 18 Primary Bone and Soft Tissue Tumors Highlighting a Predilection for the Hands and Feet, Frequent Multicentricity, and Benign Behavior.

Epithelioid and spindle cell hemangioma was initially described in 1999 in a series of primary bone tumors and was subsequently suggested by some to represent a variant of epithelioid hemangioma. Here, we studied 18 epithelioid and spindle cell hemangiomas. Nine patients (50%) were male. Age at presentation ranged from 12 to 78 years (median: 38.5 y). Nine patients (50%) had tumor(s) limited to bone, 5 (28%) had tumor(s) limited to soft tissue, and 4 (22%) had tumor(s) involving bone and soft tissue. Nine patients (50%) had multiple tumors, all in a unilateral anatomic region involving the wri

Hand function outcome in closed small bone fractures treated by open reduction and internal fixation by mini plate or closed crossed pinning: a randomized controlled trail.

PURPOSE: No study in literature clearly gives advantage of one method of surgical fixation of fracture over the other in metacarpal and phalangeal bones of hand comparing wider outcome measures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A randomized controlled trial between closed reduction and percutaneous Kirschner wire fixation or open reduction and internal fixation with mini fragment plates was conducted. A total of 32 patients with 16 in each group were taken in tertiary-level teaching hospital from 2014 to 2016. Four patients lost to follow-up apart from 32 studied. Inclusion criteria were age group 16-6

The ability of hand digital X-ray radiogrammetry to identify middle-aged and elderly women with reduced bone density, as assessed by femoral neck dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry.

In this study, we evaluate the ability of digitized digital X-ray radiogrammetry (DXR) bone mineral density (BMD) to identify women with reduced BMD at femoral neck, assessed by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). The study population contained women with recent low-energy distal radius fracture and women recruited from the general population, all aged 50 yr or older. The correlation between hand BMD and femoral neck BMD was r=0.65 (p<0.001). We used a triage approach where 2 cutoffs for DXR T-score were defined at which patients with 90% sensitivity and 90% specificity could be identified

Hands Up Program: Results of a feasibility study of a randomized controlled trial of a bone health exercise and education program for adults aged 50-65 post distal radius fracture.

PURPOSE: Distal radius fractures (DRF) that occur from a fall from level ground are considered fragility fractures and may be the first indication that someone has compromised bone mineral density and is at risk of having osteoporosis. Women at about 50 years of age experience a dramatic increase risk of these fractures. Rehabilitation after DRF focuses on restoring range of motion and strength in the wrist, but rarely address future bone health concerns. We developed a 6-week therapist-developed remote full body exercise and osteoporosis/bone-health education program (called The Hands Up Prog

Genomewide linkage scan for split-hand/foot malformation with long-bone deficiency in a large Arab family identifies two novel susceptibility loci on chromosomes 1q42.2-q43 and 6q14.1.

Split-hand/foot malformation with long-bone deficiency (SHFLD) is a rare, severe limb deformity characterized by tibia aplasia with or without split-hand/split-foot deformity. Identification of genetic susceptibility loci for SHFLD has been unsuccessful because of its rare incidence, variable phenotypic expression and associated anomalies, and uncertain inheritance pattern. SHFLD is usually inherited as an autosomal dominant trait with reduced penetrance, although recessive inheritance has also been postulated. We conducted a genomewide linkage analysis, using a 10K SNP array in a large consan

[Features of the structure of the metacarpal bones of athletes in different specialties].

Metacarpal bones have been examined in hand X-ray photos of 125 sportsmen at the age of 17-18 years who go in for swimming (dynamic loading on the hand) and competitive gymnastics (static loading on the hand). Under the effect of systematic trainings, which are connected with an increased loading on the hand, a number of morphological changes take place in the metacarpal bones. A prolonged loading of the dynamic character delays the synostosis process in the distal parts of the forearm bones and contributes to lengthening the I, III and IV and to widening the I-V metacarpal bones. As demonstra

[Imaging in the early diagnosis of changes in the hand of patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis. Is ultrasound a true alternative for low-field magnetic resonance scanning, 3-phase bone scintigraphy and conventional x-rays?].

PURPOSE: Besides the use of conventional x-rays in the diagnostic work-up of initial changes in patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis (RA), 3-phase bone scintigraphy (3P-Sz) is as well established as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The aim of this study was to compare the diagnostic value of ultrasound of the hands with proven methods such as conventional x-rays, low-field MRI and 3P-Sz. METHODS: A total of 30 patients were studied using a 1 day protocol with ultrasound, 3P-Sz, MRI and x-ray of the hands.
