Exploring causes of delays in help-seeking behaviours among symptomatic Omani women diagnosed with late-stage breast cancer - A qualitative study.

PURPOSE: Breast cancer (BC) is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Oman; however, the majority of women are diagnosed at a relatively young age and late stage. Delays in BC diagnosis may be attributable to patient-related barriers to medical help-seeking, such as embarrassment arising from breast examinations or negative perceptions of cancer or a cancer diagnosis. Identifying and addressing patients-related barriers to medical help-seeking may help early BC detection, increase the survival rate, and improve prognosis. This study aimed to explore causes of delays in medical help-seeking beha

Hierarchical linear regressions models examined the effects of age, racial identity, student status, insurance status, relationship to perpetrator, time since assault, problematic drinking, and posttraumatic stress symptoms on (a) barriers to accessing care and (b) the likelihood of seeking me

Preventing Sexual Abuse: Perspectives of Minor-Attracted Persons About Seeking Help.

The primary aim of this exploratory research was to gain information from minor-attracted persons (MAPs) about their (a) formal and informal experiences with help-seeking for minor attraction, (b) perceived barriers to seeking help for concerns about minor attraction, and (c) treatment priorities as identified by consumers of these services. A nonrandom, purposive sample of MAPs (n = 293, 154 completed all questions) was recruited via an online survey. Results show that 75% of participants did seek formal help from a professional; however, just less than half of them found the experience to be

Alcohol, drug and related health and wellbeing issues among young people completing an online screen.

OBJECTIVE: Despite high levels of alcohol use, drug use and risky behaviors, rates of help-seeking amongst young people are typically low. This study explored the profile of young people (under the age of 25 years) completing an online screen, assessing substance use problem severity and wellbeing in comparison with adults completing the same screen, so as to inform development of better targeted approaches for this in-need population. METHODS: Between 2012 and 2014, an online alcohol and drug screen was promoted across Australia on a national online counseling service. The screen assessed se

Factors influencing stress and mental health help-seeking in Asian Americans: A qualitative study focused on Karen refugee parents.

BACKGROUND: Suicide is the leading cause of death among Asian Americans aged 15-24 years, and Asian American populations experienced some of the highest increases in suicide rates from 2021 to 2022. Despite these trends, Asian Americans have the lowest rates of mental healthcare help-seeking and remain underrepresented in mental health research. Addressing mental health disparities requires awareness of the cultural, familial, and systemic factors that shape help-seeking behaviors. PURPOSE: Given the heterogeneity across more than 50 Asian American groups that speak over 100 languages, it is

Alexithymia and its influence on perceived social support, stress, and help-seeking attitudes in men undergoing radical prostatectomy.

BACKGROUND: Men undergoing radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer often exhibit reluctance to seek professional psychological help. Emerging evidence suggests that alexithymia, a personality trait characterized by difficulties in identifying and expressing emotions-may contribute to this reluctance by impairing emotional processing and interpersonal functioning. However, the relationships among alexithymia, perceived social support, perceived stress, and help-seeking attitudes remain insufficiently explored in this population. This study aims to examine the influence of alexithymia on these

Health-seeking behaviour among patients with faecal incontinence in a Malaysian academic setting.

BACKGROUND: Faecal incontinence (FI) is not a common presenting complaint in Malaysia, and little has been published on this topic. Since it is a treatable condition, a greater understanding of factors contributing to healthseeking behaviour is needed in order to plan effective provision of services. METHODS: A survey of 1000 patients and accompanying relatives, visiting general surgical and obstetrics and gynaecology clinics for matters unrelated to FI, was conducted at University Malaya Medical Centre between January 2009 and February 2010. A follow-up regression analysis of the 83 patients

Understanding Generational Differences in Muslim American Mental Health Help-Seeking.

Attitudes toward mental health help-seeking are shaped by a complex interplay of environmental, sociocultural, religious, and generational factors. Within Muslim communities, these attitudes are further informed by religious teachings, cultural norms, and intergenerational dynamics. This study explores the disparities in mental health-seeking behavior between first- and second-generation Muslim Americans. The sample consisted of 37 participants, including 16 first-generation immigrants (foreign-born) and 21 second-generation individuals born in the USA to at least one immigrant parent. The stu

Differential symptom expression and somatization in Thai versus U.S. children.

Individuals react in a variety of ways when experiencing environmental challenges exceeding their capacity to cope adaptively. Some researchers have suggested that Asian populations tend to react to excessive stress with somatic symptoms, whereas Western populations tend to respond more with affective or depressive symptoms. Other researchers, however, have suggested that such differences may represent different approaches to help seeking rather than actual variations in prevalence. The present study compared somatic versus affective symptoms in U.S. and Thai children from community and mental

Explanatory models of major depression and implications for help-seeking among immigrant Chinese-American women.

This study explores the explanatory models of major depression in a group of 40 recently immigrated Chinese-American women, and demonstrates the significant relationship between problem conceptualization and help-seeking behavior. Respondents are presented a vignette depicting major depression, from which they are asked to conceptualize the problem described and answer questions regarding its cause, impact and potential sources for help-seeking. Those who provide a psychological conceptualization are likely not to suggest professional services, but to turn to themselves and family and friends

Help-Seeking, Support, and Engagement in Gestational Diabetes Mellitus Online Communities on Facebook: Content Analysis.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) has drastically risen in recent years. For some, self-management includes the use of GDM online communities on Facebook. Such communities can fill gaps in information and support that participants are not able to access elsewhere to address unmet needs. Given the popularity of sharing information about pregnancy on Facebook and the documented benefits of diabetes online communities, the same may be true of GDM online communities. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to categorize and quantify what is being discussed in GDM Facebook grou
