[Spondyloarthritides: principles of rehabilitation].

Spondyloarthritides (SpA) cover the group of heterogeneous inflammatory rheumatic diseases, being chronic by duration and progressive by development, including ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and psoriatic arthritis (PsA). Although it is a question of clinically different entities, this big group of rheumatic diseases has got numerous common clinical, functional, radiological and genetic features which make them different from the other inflammatory rheumatic diseases. One of the most important approaches to the treatment of SpA patients is medical rehabilitation and monitoring their functional st

Comparative Effects of Land-Based and Aquatic Physiotherapy on Functional and Neuromuscular Outcomes in the Rigid-Akinetic Subtype of Parkinson's Disease: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) leads to motor and neuromuscular impairments, with the rigid-akinetic (RA) subtype progressing more rapidly and affecting daily activities and balance. Beyond medication, strength training can improve disease severity and muscle function. However, research on land-based and aquatic physiotherapy for the RA subtype is limited. The objective of the study was to describe and compare the effects of 12 weeks of land-based physiotherapy (LP) and aquatic physiotherapy (AP) on the motor function of individuals with rigid-akinetic PD. METHODS: Thirty individuals wi

Cold-Water Immersion and Contrast Water Therapy: No Improvement of Short-Term Recovery After Resistance Training.

CONTEXT: An athlete's ability to recover quickly is important when there is limited time between training and competition. As such, recovery strategies are commonly used to expedite the recovery process. PURPOSE: To determine the effectiveness of both cold-water immersion (CWI) and contrast water therapy (CWT) compared with control on short-term recovery (<4 h) after a single full-body resistance-training session. METHODS: Thirteen men (age 26 ± 5 y, weight 79 ± 7 kg, height 177 ± 5 cm) were assessed for perceptual (fatigue and soreness) and performance measures (maximal voluntary isometric

Beneficial effects of footbaths in controlling spasticity after stroke.

Footbaths are considered to provide beneficial thermal therapy for post-stroke patients with spasticity, but their anti-spastic effects have not been investigated comprehensively. The present study aimed to evaluate alterations in motor-neuron excitability using F-wave parameters in post-stroke patients with spastic hemiplegia. Subjects' legs below the knee joint were immersed in water at 41 degrees C and F-wave recordings were made over the abductor hallucis muscle before, immediately after, and 30 min after thermal treatment. Antidromic stimulation was performed on the tibial nerve at the an

Thermoregulatory responses to exercise and warm water immersion in physically trained men with tetraplegia.

OBJECTIVE: To compare thermoregulatory responses of highly trained men who are tetraplegic during 40 min exercise at 65% [Vdot]O(2) peak and 60 min immersion in 39 degrees C water. METHODS: Four physically trained men who are tetraplegic participated in three laboratory visits. The first visit involved familiarisation and then determination of [Vdot]O(2) peak using open circuit spirometry during an incremental test to exhaustion with each man propelling his sport wheelchair on a motor driven treadmill. The order of second and third visits was randomly allocated. Visit 2 involved 40 min of exe

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) for fibromyalgia in adults.

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia is characterised by persistent, widespread pain; sleep problems; and fatigue. Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is the delivery of pulsed electrical currents across the intact surface of the skin to stimulate peripheral nerves and is used extensively to manage painful conditions. TENS is inexpensive, safe, and can be self-administered. TENS reduces pain during movement in some people so it may be a useful adjunct to assist participation in exercise and activities of daily living. To date, there has been only one systematic review in 2012 which included

A whirlpool associated outbreak of Pontiac fever at a hotel in Northern Sweden.

In April 1999, an outbreak of Pontiac fever occurred at a hotel in Northern Sweden. A retrospective cohort study to find the source and define the extent of the outbreak was carried out among 530 Swedish and Norwegian guests. Twenty-nine epidemiological cases (8% of 378 responders) aged 21-57 years were identified. Antibodies against Legionella micdadei were detected in 17 of 27 tested cases and 3 other symptomatic persons. Visiting the whirlpool area was identified as the sole risk factor (RR 86; 95% CI 21-352) and infected cases were confined to visitors to this area over three successive da

Integrative Oncology for High-Grade Glioma: A Case Report on the Combined Effects of Oncothermia and Complementary Therapies.

High-grade gliomas are aggressive brain tumors with a poor prognosis despite conventional treatments such as surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. Integrative oncology, combining conventional and complementary therapies, may offer additional benefits in managing these complex cases. We present a 68-year-old male farmer diagnosed with high-grade glioma in the left medial temporal lobe. The patient presented with severe headache, disturbed sleep, and anxiety, and experienced an episode of fever and seizure. He refused conventional radiation therapy due to concerns about side effects and opted fo

Comparative effects of 2 aqua exercise programs on physical function, balance, and perceived quality of life in older adults with osteoarthritis.

BACKGROUND: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease, which affects a large number of older adults. Many older adults with OA are physically inactive, which can contribute to reduced functional capability, quality of life, and an increased risk of falls. Although hydrotherapy is often recommended for older adults with OA, less is known about aqua fitness (AF), a widely available form of aqua-based exercise. PURPOSE: To compare the effect of an AF program and a seated aqua-based exercise program on a range of functional measures and quality of life among older adults with OA. METHO
