Health expectations : an international journal of public participation in health care and health policy2018eng
BACKGROUND: Women in prison have complex medical needs and poorer health status than the general population. Culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) women in prison, particularly those with limited English proficiency (LEP), have distinct needs and risk additional isolation, discrimination and marginalization when they are in prison.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to examine how cultural and linguistic diversity, particularly LEP, affects the health-care experiences of women in prison.
DESIGN, SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: We conducted focus groups and semi-structured qualitative interviews with CALD

Self-distancing has been shown to alleviate emotional pain and to have potential efficacy for treating chronic pain and imagined acute pain, relative to self-immersing. This study examined the efficacy of self-distancing in relieving acute physical pain caused by a cold pressor task (CPT) in healthy adults. A total of 65 undergraduates were assigned pseudorandomly to 1 of 3 groups: 1) a self-distancing group, in which participants were instructed to "take a step back" to simulate their current painful experience as an observer, 2) a self-immersed group, in which participants' current painful e

Affective lability, or the instability of emotional states, is associated with heightened levels of trauma-related emotional responding and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. However, the impact of affective lability, specifically on habituation to idiographic trauma cues, has yet to be examined among trauma-exposed individuals. The current study examined differential response trajectories to trauma-related imaginal exposure as a function of affective lability. Specifically, 72 women with a history of sexual victimization participated in a laboratory-based study involving a single

AIMS: To compare, in a double-blind, randomized, multi-national study, 52- or 78-week treatment with basal insulin peglispro or insulin glargine, added to pre-study oral antihyperglycaemic medications, in insulin-naïve adults with type 2 diabetes.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The primary outcome was non-inferiority of peglispro to glargine with regard to glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) reduction (margin = 0.4%). Six gated secondary objectives with statistical multiplicity adjustments focused on other measures of glycaemic control and safety. Liver fat content was measured using MRI, in a subset of pati

The aim of the present study was to investigate whether reduced autobiographical memory and future event specificity were associated with elevated depressive and stress symptoms immediately and 1 week following exposure to a trauma film. A non-clinical sample comprising 101 participants completed all phases of the study, which included the following: baseline tests of autobiographical memory and future event specificity; a diary recording intrusions of the film over a 7-day period; and self-report questionnaires assessing depressive, posttraumatic stress and ruminative symptoms 7 days followin

Single-cell electrophysiological recordings were obtained from olfactory receptor neurons housed in sensilla trichodea along the adult antennae arising from transplantation of the antennal imaginal discs between larval male Helicoverpa zea and Heliothis virescens. The olfactory receptor neurons from the majority of type C sensilla sampled on transplanted antennae displayed response characteristics consistent with those of the species that donated the antennae. However, some of the sensilla type C sampled in either transplant type contained olfactory receptor neurons that responded in a manner

OBJECTIVES: The goal of this research was to investigate how marginalized group members interpret relational cues (e.g., words, behaviors) that signal their likelihood of experiencing identity-threat or identity-safety during interracial interactions during novel interactions with White strangers, compared to established relationships with White friends or White allies.
METHOD: Across two preregistered experiments, Latine (N = 513) and Black (N = 478) Americans imagined discussing a racist incident with a White stranger (Studies 1 and 2), friend (Studies 1 and 2), or ally (Study 2) who demons

BACKGROUND: Olfactory reference syndrome is a psychiatric disorder characterized by a persistent and distressing preoccupation with emitting a foul body odor despite the absence of objective evidence. It is classified under "other specified obsessive-compulsive and related disorders" in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, Text Revision. Although olfactory reference syndrome has been described in several regions globally, there are no published case reports from East Africa.

BACKGROUND: Asthma is a chronic condition with a high health and social burden in children. Although many well-studied effective therapies are available, because of suboptimal adherence and inhalation technique, asthma in children remains frequently uncontrolled. It is often assumed that adherence and technique are highly correlated items, but this assumption has not been thoroughly validated.
OBJECTIVE: This trial evaluates the correlation between adherence and inhalation technique and the association of patient-related factors with these two important parameters.
DESIGN: Observational phas

Individuals suffering from obsessive-compulsive disorder often experience obsessions as ego-dystonic, knowing that a mental event does not reflect reality but acting as if it does. Imagination has been suggested as an important process involved in this mismatch about the actual truth value of obsessions. Imagining false events has been found to impact spontaneous truth evaluations (implicit truth value; ITV), even when people explicitly acknowledged the imagined event as false (explicit truth value; ETV; Shidlovski et al., 2014). The current study examined discrepancies between ITV and ETV alo

INTRODUCTION: Climate change poses enormous threats to humanity and much of life on earth. Many of the behavioral patterns that drive climate change also contribute to the epidemics of obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.
OBJECTIVES: The primary objective of this study was to compile and categorize the literature on interventions aimed at modifying individual behaviors to promote both personal health and environmental sustainability. Secondary objectives were to help define the emerging field of behavioral eco-wellness and to discuss future directions, including the need for assessm

INTRODUCTION: The factors that contribute to the maintenance of anorexia nervosa (AN) are not fully understood, although it is generally accepted that depression is a core feature and contributes to poor prognosis. Individuals with depression tend to have difficulties in producing specific details of autobiographical memories and future episodes. Our aim was to investigate autobiographical memory and episodic future thinking (EFT) in individuals with AN (n = 46), people recovered from AN (recAN; n = 40), and non-affected controls (n = 35).
METHOD: Using a remotely administered computerised ve

BACKGROUND: Assessment of changes in higher levels of gait control with aging is important to better understand age-related gait instability, with the perspective to improve the screening of individuals at risk for falls. The comparison between actual Timed Up and Go test (aTUG) and its imagined version (iTUG) is a simple clinical way to assess age-related changes in gait control. The modulations of iTUG performances by body positions and motor imagery (MI) strategies with normal aging have not been evaluated yet. This study aims 1) to compare the aTUG time with the iTUG time under different b

Simulation theory proposes motor imagery (MI) to be a simulation based on representations also used for motor execution (ME). Nonetheless, it is unclear how far they use the same neural code. We use multivariate pattern analysis (MVPA) and representational similarity analysis (RSA) to describe the neural representations associated with MI and ME within the frontoparietal motor network. During functional magnetic resonance imaging scanning, 20 volunteers imagined or executed 3 different types of right-hand actions. Results of MVPA showed that these actions as well as their modality (MI or ME) c

BACKGROUND: Our aim was to use functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to compare brain activation changes due to botulinum toxin A (BoNT) application between two chronic stroke patient groups with different degree of weakness treated for upper limb spasticity.
METHODS: Fourteen ischemic stroke patients with hand weakness and spasticity were studied. Spasticity was scored by modified Ashworth scale (MAS). FMRI was performed 3 times: before (W0) and 4 (W4) and 11 weeks (W11) after BoNT application. Group A: 7 patients (2 males, 5 females; mean age 59.14 years) with hand plegia, who imagin

When people simultaneously draw lines with one hand and circles with the other hand, both trajectories tend to assume an oval shape, showing that hand motor programs interact (the so-called "bimanual coupling effect"). The aim of the present study was to investigate how motor parameters (drawing trajectories) and the related brain activity vary during bimanual movements both in real execution and in motor imagery tasks. In the 'Real' modality, subjects performed right hand movements (lines) and, simultaneously, Congruent (lines) or Non-congruent (circles) left hand movements. In the 'Imagery'

Behavioral avoidance tasks (BATs) have been used for decades in the assessment of specific phobias, but they also involve a number of prohibitive difficulties. This study investigated a new imaginal/self-report instrument, the Behavioral Avoidance Task Using Imaginal Exposure (BATIE), and evaluated whether it was an efficient paper-and-pencil alternative. Forty-nine adults diagnosed with specific phobias were matched to 49 participants without those particular phobias who served as control participants. The participants were 89.8% female and 79.6% Caucasian and had a mean age of 20.81 years (S

BACKGROUND: Few studies have explored motor imagery (MI) as a way of accessing the higher-level of control of complex body movements involved in gait or balance. The objective of this study was 1) to measure and compare the time needed to complete the Timed Up & Go test (TUG), the time needed to imagine performing the same test (iTUG) and to calculate the time difference between both of these conditions (delta time) in a sample of young and older adults, and 2) to examine whether there was an association between the Timed Up & Go test results (TUG, iTUG, delta time), age and cognitive decline.
