Improving Blood Retinol Concentrations with Complementary Foods Fortified with Moringa oleifera Leaf Powder - A Pilot Study.

Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) remains a major public health issue and is reported to be the cause of about 6 percent of child deaths under the age of 5 years in Africa. Inadequate dietary intake of vitamin A-rich foods is a major cause of VAD. Moringa oleifera leaf powder (MLP) is rich in nutrients particularly vitamin A and its use in infant feeding has been explored. This pilot study was designed to test the efficacy of MLP in improving blood retinol concentrations among infants in a rural district in Ghana. A subset of infants participating in a randomized controlled trial (ISRCTN14377902) wer

Low biotin content of infant formulas made in Japan.

Since minor vitamins such as biotin are not yet registered as food additives in Japan, these cannot be used to supplement infant formulas or foods, despite their nutritional value. Therefore, the biotin contents of infant formulas made in Japan were determined and compared with those from the United States (US). The Japanese products were obtained from five companies, while the US products were limited to those from one company. The average content of total biotin in 11 Japanese products for nursing of normal infants (standard formulas) was 1.04 micrograms/100 kcal (0.69 microgram/100 ml), whi

Home and videotape intervention delays early complementary feeding among adolescent mothers.

BACKGROUND: The American Academy of Pediatrics, the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), and the World Health Organization recommend that infants receive only breast milk or formula for the first 4 to 6 months of life, followed by the introduction of complementary foods. Despite these recommendations, many infants, particularly those with adolescent mothers, receive solid foods (often cereal mixed with formula in a bottle) and liquids other than formula or breast milk in the first few weeks of life. Decisions on early feeding are often guided by grandm

Bacterial contamination in traditional Gambian weaning foods.

Although emphasis on infant feeding is rightly being placed on breast-feeding, the need for safe weaning foods for the developing world must also receive its due attention. Traditional weaning foods used for young infants in a typical West African village can be as hazardous, bacteriologically, as commercial milk products, and providing a breast-fed child with supplements under the conditions which prevail in much of the developing world is potentially dangerous, whatever the source of the food.

[Do breast-feeding and "diet" milks have any preventive or curative effect in the management of atopic dermatitis in children?].

A) The preventive interest of infants' food in the onset of atopic dermatitis. Measures of prevention of atopic dermatitis concern predisposed children. Most studies agree on the protective effect of breast feeding for at least 3 to 4 months, compared with industrial milk products, on the onset of atopic dermatitis. Partial breast feeding is not protective. There is no preventive effect of breast feeding on the onset of atopic dermatitis in the absence of a family history of atopy. However, a few studies have raised the question of the aggravation of eczema during prolonged breast feeding. The

A home-based progressive-ratio task for assessing food reinforcement in infancy: Developmental sensitivity at 9 and 12 months.

The relative reinforcing value of food (RRVFood) is theorized to emerge early and contribute to obesity risk. We examined whether a matched set of solid foods elicited differentiation between food and nonfood reinforcement at 9 (n = 110) and 12 (n = 133) months of age. We hypothesized that infants would respond for both reinforcers at both age points with enough variability for individual-differences analyses, and that RRVFood would relate to food consumption, appetitive traits, and weight-for-length z-score (WLZ) more strongly at 12 months. In a longitudinal subsample (n = 70), we further hyp

Effect of exclusive breastfeeding and complementary feeding on infant growth and morbidity.

A cohort study was conducted in the Islamic Republic of Iran between January 1997 and February 1998 to compare the growth and morbidity of 100 infants who were exclusively breastfed for 6 months and 100 who received breast milk and complementary foods between 4-6 months. Infants' feeding pattern, weight and height were assessed and recorded. There were no significant differences in infants' weight and height gain between 4 and 6 months. The rate of diarrhoea between ages 4 and 6 months was significantly lower in exclusively breastfed infants than in complementary food-fed infants (11% versus 2

Fatal choking in infants and children.

Food asphyxiation in infants/children follows a different pattern from the adult "cafe coronary." In the absence of ethanol intoxication, infants/children are prone to mishandling nonfriable, firm, slippery foods/objects with a rounded contour. The Dade County Medical Examiner's files were searched from 1956 to mid-1983 for accidental pediatric choking deaths. Seventeen food and six foreign body asphyxiations were found. The male/female ratio was 1.4/1 and 1/1, respectively. The white/black ratio was 0.9/1 for food asphyxiation whereas no black victims were encountered choking upon foreign obj

An Investigation of the Relationship Between Dietary Patterns in Early Pregnancy and Maternal/Infant Health Outcomes in a Chinese Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Studies assessing links between maternal diet and pregnancy outcomes have focused predominantly on individual nutrients or foods. However, nutrients are typically consumed in combinations of foods or beverages (i.e., dietary patterns). Taking into account the diet as a whole appreciates that nutrient absorption and metabolism are influenced by other nutrients and the food matrix. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between dietary pattern consumption in early pregnancy and pregnancy/infant outcomes, including gestational diabetes mellitus, gestatio

[Primary prevention of allergic disease].

Allergic diseases are a major public health problem. It is essential to develop prevention strategies applied to it. A number of risk factors have been identified, but some are still under contradictory. Changing the dietary pattern of the at-risk infant may prevent food allergy. Evidence suggests that exclusive breast-feeding for the first 4-months seems to protect against atopic dermatitis in infants and early childhood wheezing. Breast-feeding should be encouraged for all infants because of all its well known benefits. Hydrolyzed formulas cannot substitute breast milk on the prevention of a

Physiological development of the infant and its implications for complementary feeding.

From the standpoint of nutritional needs, physiological maturation, and immunological safety the provision of foods other than breast milk before about four months of age is unnecessary and may also be harmful. On the other hand, many infants require some complementary feeding by about six months of age. There are a number of known disadvantages and risks involved in too early complementary feeding, including interference with the infant's feeding behaviour, reduced breast-milk production, decreased iron absorption from breast milk, increased risk of infections and allergy in infants, and incr
