Pharmacotherapy of Demodex-Associated Blepharitis: Current Trends and Future Perspectives.

Demodex-associated blepharitis (DAB) is a common condition in our society. Patients report not only uncomfortable and bothersome symptoms but also decreased self-esteem and confidence. Because of its nonspecific signs, pharmacists are often the first healthcare professionals patients consult. What is most concerning is that DAB can cause serious complications within the eye, such as dry eye syndrome, corneal scarring, or recurrent styes and chalazia. Therefore, we aimed to compile both standard and innovative therapies and compare their effectiveness and safety. As shown, standard methods rema

Intense pulse light and 5-ALA PDT: phototoxic effects in vitro depend on the spectral overlap with protoporphyrine IX but do not match cut-off filter notations.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Successful photodynamic therapy (PDT) requires a light source by which light is absorbed by the photosensitizer. Such absorption is achieved by adapting the emission spectrum of the lamp to the absorption-spectrum of the photosensitizer. Intense pulsed light sources (IPLs) are widely used in dermatology, but a standardized protocol for IPL-PDT is not available. Five different IPLs were chosen to evaluate their efficacy for PDT in vitro and the possibility for developing a standard protocol for PDT. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Emission-spectra of IPLs were measured with a

Intense Pulsed Light Attenuates UV-Induced Hyperimmune Response and Pigmentation in Human Skin Cells.

The skin of an organism is affected by various environmental factors and fights against aging stress via mechanical and biochemical responses. Photoaging induced by ultraviolet B (UVB) irradiation is common and is the most vital factor in the senescence phenotype of skin, and so, suppression of UVB stress-induced damage is critical. To lessen the UVB-induced hyperimmune response and hyperpigmentation, we investigated the ameliorative effects of intense pulsed light (IPL) treatment on the photoaged phenotype of skin cells. Normal human epidermal keratinocytes and human epidermal melanocytes wer

Lasers for Melasma.

Melasma is a chronic pigmentary condition with a multifactorial pathophysiology, involving melanin overproduction, photoaging, and hormonal factors, making treatment challenging. Lasers and light-based devices, including intense pulsed light, photobiomodulation, Q-Switched neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) laser, nanosecond laser, picosecond laser, nonablative fractional laser and ablative fractional laser have shown promise results, yet no single modality offers a definitive solution. Combination therapies, including oral or topical agents and lasers, yield better results. Main
