Exploring the Alternative Model for Personality Disorders Using SCORS-G Ratings on Thematic Apperception Test Narratives.

The Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD) in Section III of the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5; American Psychiatric Association, 2013) conceptualizes personality pathology as a combination of impairment (Criterion A) and traits (Criterion B). One measure used to develop Criterion A was the Social Cognition and Object Relations Scale - Global Rating Method (SCORS-G), which is a multidimensional, object-relational clinician-rated measure of personality functioning. Although there are conceptual links between the AMPD and SCORS-G di

The role of Ecstasy (MDMA) in managing intimacy and conflict in stable relationships.

This paper discusses motivations for the use of MDMA among young adults in intimate relationships living in resource poor environments, where structural constraints limit potential for economic mobility and impact upon interpersonal relations. Drawing from in-depth interviews with men and women in intimate relationships with one or more partners, we report the range of motivations for MDMA use and their association with indicators of relationship quality, specifically trust and romantic exclusivity. Findings demonstrate that both men and women use MDMA primarily for the purpose of sexual enjoy

A cluster randomized trial of adding peer specialists to intensive case management teams in the Veterans Health Administration.

Use of peer specialists (PSs)--individuals with serious mental illness who use their experiences to help others with serious mental illness--is increasing. However, their impact on patient outcomes has not been demonstrated definitively. This cluster randomized, controlled trial within the Veterans Health Administration compared patients served by three intensive case management teams that each deployed two PSs for 1 year, to the patients of three similar teams without PSs (Usual Care). All patients (PS group = 149, Usual Care = 133) had substantial psychiatric inpatient histories and a primar

Clinical application of a dysregulation model of illness and disease: a case of spasmodic torticollis.

A case of spasmodic torticollis is described to demonstrate the clinical usefulness of a new theoretical model of somatic illness and disease. Based on a conception of the living organism as a self-regulating system, the model attributes somatic disorders to a variety of regulatory disturbances including deficits in affect regulation and in the ability to maintain a stable and cohesive self. Throughout the analytical treatment, attention was given to repairing deficits in the patient's self-organisation, and to elevating chaotic impulses and inchoate emotions from a primitive sensorimotor leve

The GaMMA corpus of Danish polyadic conversations with gaze speech and motion data in quiet and noise.

The GaMMA (Gaze, Motion, and Multi-talker Audio) corpus captures the behavior of polyadic conversations among native Danish speakers under both normal and cocktail party conditions. Eleven groups of four normal-hearing participants are recorded while engaged in natural and spontaneous interactions. All conversations were conducted without conversational tasks. Each group was intentionally composed of participants with prior intragroup and interpersonal relations. Gaze and motion data were collected using an optical tracking system and eye-tracking glasses, while speech was recorded via omnidir

Mental Health Nursing Simulation to Develop the Therapeutic Use of Self.

BACKGROUND: Although simulation is well established for procedural and acute care skills, mental health nursing simulation focused on the therapeutic use of self remains underrepresented in the literature. This article describes the design, implementation, and educational contribution of three theory-informed mental health nursing simulations developed to support competency-based psychiatric nursing education. METHOD: Guided by Peplau's interpersonal relations theory, three simulations were developed addressing motivational interviewing for alcohol use disorder, trauma-informed care for intim

The Contents and Function of Humor Among Hunter-Gatherers.

Across cultures, people find many of the same things funny. Competing theories of humor have been forwarded to account for this. Adopting a view of humor as an evolved response to benign violations, I argue that four comic themes characterize most humor across cultures: pain and misfortune, sex and obscenity, the foreign, and the sacred. I propose that each of these themes are ultimately grounded in our evolved psychology as universal pressure points that humor can tap into. I review 745 descriptions of humor in the ethnographic record of the ten hunter-gatherer societies in the Probability Sa

The relation between the bifactor model of the Youth Psychopathic Traits Inventory and conduct problems in adolescence: Variations across gender, ethnic background, and age.

The current study examines how the bifactor model of the Youth Psychopathic Traits Inventory (YPI) is related to conduct problems in a sample of Dutch adolescents (N = 2,874; 43% female). It addresses to what extent the YPI dimensions explain variance over and above a General Psychopathy factor (i.e., one factor related to all items) and how the general factor and dimensional factors are related to conduct problems. Group differences in these relations for gender, ethnic background, and age were examined. Results showed that the general factor is most important, but dimensions explain variance

Moving Narcissus: Can Narcissists Be Empathic?

Empathy plays a critical role in fostering and maintaining social relations. Narcissists lack empathy, and this may account for their interpersonal failures. But why do narcissists lack empathy? Are they incapable, or is change possible? Three studies addressed this question. Study 1 showed that the link between narcissism and low empathy generalizes to a specific target person presented in a vignette. The effect was driven by maladaptive narcissistic components (i.e., entitlement, exploitativeness, exhibitionism). Study 2 examined the effect of perspective-taking (vs. control) instructions on

Envelopments: immersion in and emergence from drug misuse.

Contemporary psychodynamic therapists, as contrasted with early ones, are more active and interactive, less dependent on interpretations, and more focused on affects, self-regulation, and interpersonal relations, with a premium placed on the therapeutic alliance. Evidence supports the utility and effectiveness of the psychodynamic paradigm. Two cases are presented that demonstrate how a well-trained psychodynamic therapist is able to effectively apply such an approach to individuals with substance use disorders, in one instance a client in early treatment still immersed in her addictions, and,

The importance of social context in understanding and promoting low-income immigrant women's health.

Understanding the social context and realities of Cape Verdean women in the U.S. as well as other immigrant and ethnic/racial groups is important to promote their overall health and well-being more effectively. The aim of this study was to gain a contextual understanding from the perspectives of health promoters who work with marginalized women. In-depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine Cape Verdean women health promoters about their perspectives and experiences of health promotion practice with immigrant women in their community. Using a Glaserian grounded theory approach
