[Long-term Succession Patterns and Driving Factors of Water Quality in a Flood-pulse System Lake: A Case Study of Lake Luoma, Jiangsu Province].

Lake Luoma is an important storage lake for the Eastern route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project (NSBD), which has many functions including flood control and irrigation, drinking water supply, and ecological maintenance. In order to understand the succession patterns and driving factors of water quality in Lake Luoma, we used monthly monitoring data from 2009 to 2020 in combination with historical data from 1996 to 2008. The long-term succession patterns, seasonal dynamics, and spatial patterns of total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), permanganate index, and ammonia nitrogen (

Growth form controls the seasonal stability of nutrient-pollution mitigation by submerged macrophytes in shallow lakes.

Submerged macrophyte restoration is widely used to mitigate nutrient pollution in eutrophic shallow lakes, yet its effectiveness is often evaluated during peak plant growth rather than across the full growing season. This creates uncertainty about whether restored clear-water conditions can persist during late-season plant decline. Here, a mesocosm experiment compared a canopy-forming species, Hydrilla verticillata, with a rosette-forming species, Vallisneria natans, at vigorous- and late-growth stages. We measured overlying-water quality, sediment properties, extracellular enzyme activities,

Human-induced N-P imbalances will aggravate GHG emissions from lakes and reservoirs under persisting eutrophication.

Lakes and reservoirs are hotspots for emissions of atmospheric greenhouse gas (GHG) such as CO2, CH4, and N2O, and their nutrient levels and stoichiometric status are significant drivers of GHG emissions. In recent decades, human-induced unbalanced inputs of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) have enhanced the P-limiting state of inland lake and reservoir systems. However, it remains unclear whether this state transition involves global changes in nutrient-limiting systems and GHG emissions from lakes and reservoirs. In this study, a comprehensive model was developed to examine the relationship b

Can sustained climate warming intensify the carbon source potential of saline lakes on the Qingzang Plateau?

Under global climate change intensification, the debate over whether high-altitude saline lakes act as carbon (C) emission sinks or sources remains unresolved. Moreover, there is currently a lack of systematic metabolic and mechanistic C assessments for saline lake ecosystems on the Qingzang Plateau (QZP), especially regarding their associative changes under climate change. Here, we used 18/16O technology and regression models to assess saline lake C metabolism on the QZP between 2000 and 2020. Additionally, we predicted the C metabolism of these lakes between 2030 and 2050 under three future

Physico-chemical and high frequency monitoring dataset from mesocosm experiments simulating extreme climate events in lakes.

We present two datasets composed of high frequency sensors data, vertical in situ profiles and laboratory chemical analysis data, acquired during two different aquatic mesocosm experiments performed at the OLA ("Long-term observation and experimentation for lake ecosystems") facility at the UMR CARRTEL in Thonon les Bains, on the French shore of Lake Geneva. The DOMLAC experiment lasted 3 weeks (4-21 October 2021) and aimed to simulate predicted climate scenarios (i.e. extreme events such as storms and floods) by reproducing changes in quality and composition of lake subsidies and runoff by in

Prevalence of intra-osseous veins and venous lakes in the posterior skull base on 3T MRI.

BACKGROUND: Intra-osseous vessels are normal anatomic structures in the calvarium and skull base. On imaging, these structures-particularly venous lakes-can mimic pathologic abnormalities. This study sought to assess the prevalence of veins and lakes in the skull base on MRI. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review was completed of consecutive patients that underwent contrast-enhanced MRI imaging of the internal auditory canals. The clivus, jugular tubercles, and basio-occiput were assessed for the presence of both intra-osseous veins (serpentine and/or branching vessels) and venous lak

Salinity Impact on Composition and Activity of Nitrate-Reducing Fe(II)-Oxidizing Microorganisms in Saline Lakes.

Nitrate-reducing Fe(II)-oxidizing (NRFeOx) microorganisms contribute to nitrogen, carbon, and iron cycling in freshwater and marine ecosystems. However, NRFeOx microorganisms have not been investigated in hypersaline lakes, and their identity, as well as their activity in response to salinity, is unknown. In this study, we combined cultivation-based most probable number (MPN) counts with Illumina MiSeq sequencing to analyze the abundance and community compositions of NRFeOx microorganisms enriched from five lake sediments with different salinities (ranging from 0.67 g/L to 346 g/L). MPN result

Thyroid function and immune status in perch (Perca fluviatilis) from lakes contaminated with PFASs or PCBs.

The environment contains a multitude of man-made chemicals, some of which can act as endocrine disruptors (EDCs), while others can be immunotoxic. We evaluated thyroid disruption and immunotoxic effects in wild female perch (Perca fluviatilis) collected from two contaminated areas in Sweden; one site contaminated with per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) and two sites contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), with one reference site included for each area. The hepatic mRNA expression of thyroid receptors α and β, and the thyroid hormone metabolising iodothyronine deiodinases (

Tracking petrogenic hydrocarbons in lakes of the Peace-Athabasca Delta in Alberta, Canada using petroleum biomarkers.

The Peace-Athabasca Delta (PAD) receives a mixture of hydrocarbons from biogenic, pyrogenic, and petrogenic processes. Source apportionment in the PAD has focussed on polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs), which are ubiquitous in the environment and susceptible to weathering. In contrast, petroleum biomarkers of terpanes, hopanes, and steranes are degradation-resistant organic compounds found uniquely in petroleum products that can identify the input and origin of petrogenic hydrocarbons (PHCs). We provide an analysis of environmentally-relevant PHCs (including n-alkanes, PACs, and petroleum bi

Mercury bioaccumulation in stream food webs of the Finger Lakes in central New York State, USA.

Studies of mercury (Hg) bioaccumulation in streams draining both forested and agricultural watersheds are not common. Sixteen streams were sampled in the Finger Lakes region in central New York State with a mean agricultural land cover of 48%. Stream fish (Blacknose Dace, Rhinichthys atratulus, an invertivore; and Creek Chub, Semotilus atromaculatus, an omnivore) were collected and analyzed for total Hg (THg), and macroinvertebrates and periphyton were collected and analyzed for methylmercury (MeHg) determination. The effect of water chemistry, land cover, and macroinvertebrate MeHg was assess

Methanogens and Iron-Reducing Bacteria: the Overlooked Members of Mercury-Methylating Microbial Communities in Boreal Lakes.

Methylmercury is a potent human neurotoxin which biomagnifies in aquatic food webs. Although anaerobic microorganisms containing the hgcA gene potentially mediate the formation of methylmercury in natural environments, the diversity of these mercury-methylating microbial communities remains largely unexplored. Previous studies have implicated sulfate-reducing bacteria as the main mercury methylators in aquatic ecosystems. In the present study, we characterized the diversity of mercury-methylating microbial communities of boreal lake sediments using high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA and hg

Aluminum toxicity risk reduction as a result of reduced acid deposition in Adirondack lakes and ponds.

In 1990, the US Congress amended the Clean Air Act (CAA) to reduce regional-scale ecosystem degradation from SO x and NO x emissions which have been responsible for acid deposition in regions such as the Adirondack Mountains of New York State. An ecosystem assessment project was conducted from 1994 to 2012 by the Darrin Fresh Water Institute to determine the effect of these emission reduction policies on aquatic systems. The project investigated water chemistry and biota in 30 Adirondack lakes and ponded waters. Although regulatory changes made in response to the 1990 CAA amendments resulted i

Environmental, geographic and trophic influences on methylmercury concentrations in macroinvertebrates from lakes and wetlands across Canada.

Macroinvertebrates are a key vector in the transfer of methylmercury (MeHg) to fish. However, the factors that affect MeHg concentrations and bioaccumulation in these organisms are not as well understood as for fish, and studies on a broad geographic scale are lacking. In this study, we gathered published and unpublished MeHg and carbon (δ(13)C) and nitrogen (δ(15)N) stable isotope data for freshwater macroinvertebrates from 119 lakes and wetlands across seven Canadian provinces, along with selected physical, chemical and biological characteristics of these systems. Overall, water pH was the m

Incidence of invasive macrophytes on methylmercury budget in temperate lakes: central role of bacterial periphytic communities.

Several studies demonstrated high mercury (Hg) methylation and demethylation in the periphyton associated with floating roots in tropical ecosystems. The importance of aquatic plants on methylmercury production in three temperate ecosystems from south-western France was evaluated through Hg species concentrations, and Hg methylation/demethylation activities by using stable isotopic tracers ((199)Hg(II), Me(201)Hg). Hg accumulation and high methylation and demethylation yields were detected in plant roots and periphyton, whereas results for sediment and water were low to insignificant. The pres

[Relation between distribution of phosphorus form in the sediment of typical urban shallow lakes and eutrophication].

The forms of phosphorus in the surface sediments were extracted and determined sequentially with ethylene dinitrilo tetracetic acid (EDTA) technique in three urban shallow lakes: Lake Xuanwu, Lake Mochou and Lake Daming. The results showed that the iron and calcium-bound phosphate, about accounting for 80%, were the main forms of total phosphorus. The contents of iron bound phosphate in Lake Xuanwu and Lake Mochou were higher than that of Lake Daming, reaching 30%-40%. The organic phosphorus existed mainly in the form of alkali extractable phosphorus, while the contents of acid extractable org

Plasma steroid concentrations in relation to size and age in juvenile alligators from two Florida lakes.

Previous studies have reported a number of physiological differences among juvenile alligators from two well-studied populations (Lake Apopka and Lake Woodruff) in north central Florida. These studies obtained alligators of similar size from each lake under the assumption that the animals were of similar age. Lake Apopka is a hypertrophic lake with a 50-year history of contamination from agricultural and municipal operations, whereas Lake Woodruff is a eutrophic lake and part of a National Wildlife Refuge that receives little point source pollution. If growth rates differ among these areas, it

Concentrations and spatial variations of polybrominated diphenyl ethers and other organohalogen compounds in Great Lakes air.

Air samples were analyzed from urban, rural, and remote sites near the Great Lakes to investigate the occurrence, concentrations, and spatial and temporal differences of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) in air. The concentrations of PBDEs were compared to those of other organohalogen compounds such as PCBs and organochlorine pesticides. The samples were collected in 1997-1999 as part of the Integrated Atmospheric Deposition Network (IADN). To minimize the variability of the data, we selected only samples taken when the atmospheric temperature was 20 +/- 3 degrees C. PBDEs were found in al
