BioMamba: Domain-Adaptive Biomedical Language Models.

Background: Biomedical language models should improve performance on biomedical text while retaining general-language-modeling fluency. For Mamba-based models, this trade-off has not been systematically studied across biomedical literature and clinical text. Methods: We developed BioMamba, a family of biomedical Mamba2 models at 5 scales (130M, 370M, 780M, 1.3B, and 2.7B) obtained by continued pretraining of released public Mamba2 checkpoints on a balanced 80%/10%/10% mixture of PubMed abstracts, the Colossal Clean Crawled Corpus (C4), and Wikipedia. The architecture is unchanged from Mamba2;

Learning nature's assembly language with polymers.

The self-assembly of matter into ordered structures is ubiquitous throughout nature and engineered systems. Programming a material's macroscopic properties via molecular-level structural control is a grand scientific challenge, requiring methods for inverse design that can design a targeted molecule to achieve a given self-assembled structure. One model system that serves as a common proving ground for inverse design algorithms is block copolymers. In these systems, self-consistent field-theory (SCFT) provides a robust thermodynamic model for predicting self-assembly for a given molecular sequ

RNA Large Language Models in Virology.

The viral gene sequence is regarded as a kind of special text, which constitutes a core innovation in the application of large language models to virus research. This idea breaks free from the shackles of the traditional analysis framework and opens up a new way of computing to understand the evolution of the virus. Using this method, researchers can quickly and accurately locate the key mutation sites of the virus. This helps to detect emerging variant strains in time and assess their potential impact on transmissibility and pathogenicity. Especially importantly, this technology can also reco

Neural connectivity underlying core language functions.

INTRODUCTION: Although many white matter tracts underlying language functions have been identified, even in aggregate they do not provide a sufficiently detailed and expansive picture to enable us to fully understand the computational processes that might underly language production and comprehension. We employed diffusion tensor tractography (DTT) with a tensor distribution model to more extensively explore the white matter tracts supporting core language functions. Our study was guided by hypotheses stemming largely from the aphasia literature. METHODS: We employed high angular resolution d

Brain asymmetries in figurative language comprehension.

This chapter reviews the literature concerning the neural basis of three types of figurative expressions, namely, idioms, metaphors, and irony. Besides these three forms of language, which are the most investigated, many other types exist, differing in their linguistic structure and, consequently, in the corresponding comprehension processes. After defining the most common figurative expressions and showing how they differ in terms of linguistic properties, the chapter presents early studies that focused on the role of the right hemisphere (RH) in figurative language comprehension in general,

Revisiting atypical language lateralization in dyslexia.

Hemispheric lateralization has been central to developmental dyslexia research for over a century, yet its role in the aetiology of reading and language deficits remains elusive. While altered asymmetries have long been implicated, evidence is inconsistent, with limited consideration given to individual variability in lateralization patterns. This study investigated hemispheric lateralization in 35 adults with dyslexia and 35 matched controls using functional MRI across three language tasks: word generation, rhyming decision and lexical decision. Laterality indices were calculated to comprehen

Large language models in plant biology.

Large language models (LLMs), such as ChatGPT, have taken the world by storm. However, LLMs are not limited to human language and can be used to analyze sequential data, such as DNA, protein, and gene expression. The resulting foundation models can be repurposed to identify the complex patterns within the data, resulting in powerful, multipurpose prediction tools able to predict the state of cellular systems. This review outlines the different types of LLMs and showcases their recent uses in biology. Since LLMs have not yet been embraced by the plant community, we also cover how these models c

[Chronic pain, a clumsy body language].

Early psychological factors, including childhood traumas and personality, play a crucial role in the emergence and persistence of painful symptoms and appears to be frequent in patients with nociplastic pain. Patient care involves validating the reality of their pain and identifying various facets of their suffering, taking into account their individual history and context. A multimodal therapeutic approach, within a bio-psycho-social model, emphasizing psychotherapeutic care, is recommended.

Bilateral parietal contributions to spatial language.

It is commonly held that language is largely lateralized to the left hemisphere in most individuals, whereas spatial processing is associated with right hemisphere regions. In recent years, a number of neuroimaging studies have yielded conflicting results regarding the role of language and spatial processing areas in processing language about space (e.g., Carpenter, Just, Keller, Eddy, & Thulborn, 1999; Damasio et al., 2001). In the present study, we used sparse scanning event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate the neural correlates of spatial language, that is

Neurobiological Basis of Language Learning Difficulties.

In this paper we highlight why there is a need to examine subcortical learning systems in children with language impairment and dyslexia, rather than focusing solely on cortical areas relevant for language. First, behavioural studies find that children with these neurodevelopmental disorders perform less well than peers on procedural learning tasks that depend on corticostriatal learning circuits. Second, fMRI studies in neurotypical adults implicate corticostriatal and hippocampal systems in language learning. Finally, structural and functional abnormalities are seen in the striatum in childr

Bilinguals use language-specific articulatory settings.

PURPOSE Previous work has shown that monolingual French and English speakers use distinct articulatory settings, the underlying articulatory posture of a language. In the present article, the authors report on an experiment in which they investigated articulatory settings in bilingual speakers. The authors first tested the hypothesis that in order to sound native-like, bilinguals must use distinct, language-specific articulatory settings in monolingual mode. The authors then tested the hypothesis that in bilingual mode, a bilingual individual's articulatory setting is identical to the monoling

How subjective are subjective language complaints.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Subjective language complaints (SLC) are common during ageing but have not been investigated in detail. We aim to determine their association with demographic and clinical variables and objective cognitive performance. METHODS: A sample of 479 individuals aged 50 years or above (average 66 ± 9.1 years), followed in primary care, with no history of brain disorder were asked two questions concerning SLC, fulfilled a depression scale and undertook a battery of cognitive tests. Response to questions regarding proper name retrieval (PNR) and word finding difficulties (WFD)

Cerebellar rTMS disrupts predictive language processing.

The human cerebellum plays an important role in language, amongst other cognitive and motor functions , but a unifying theoretical framework about cerebellar language function is lacking. In an established model of motor control, the cerebellum is seen as a predictive machine, making short-term estimations about the outcome of motor commands. This allows for flexible control, on-line correction, and coordination of movements . The homogeneous cytoarchitecture of the cerebellar cortex suggests that similar computations occur throughout the structure, operating on different input signals and wit

Multiple risks and early language development.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between cumulative biological and environmental risk factors and the language development of children less than 3 years. METHODS: A sample of 253 children aged 2 to 35 months, from an urban centre in north India were evaluated for language development. The main outcome measure was the language quotient (LQ) of the child as evaluated by the Clinical Linguistic Auditory Milestone Scale (CLAMS). Twelve possible risk factors, 4 biological and 8 environmental, were selected. Biological risk factors included preterm birth, low birth weight, history of birth as

Sign language in Landau-Kleffner syndrome.

This article reviews the history of sign language (SL) and the rationale for its use in children with profound auditory agnosia due to Landau-Kleffner syndrome (LKS), illustrated by studies of children and adults followed for many years and rare cases from the literature. The reasons that SL was successful and brought some children out of isolation while it could not be implemented in others are discussed. The nowadays earlier recognition and treatment of LKS and better awareness of the crucial need to maintain communication have certainly improved the outcome of affected children. Alternative

Language organisation in left perinatal stroke.

Right-hemispheric organisation of language has been observed following early left-sided brain lesions. The role of the site of damage is still controversial, as other aspects influence the pattern of speech organisation including timing of the lesion and the presence of epilepsy. We studied a group of 10 term-born children homogeneous for timing/type of lesion and clinical picture. All subjects had left perinatal arterial stroke, right hemiplegia, normal cognitive functions and no or easily controlled epileptic seizures. In half the patients, the lesion clearly involved Broca's area, in the ot

[Focal brain lesions and language dysfunction].

To be a neurologist, training in cognitive/behavioral neuroscience is essential. In this review article, the author tries to emphasize the localization relationship between focal brain lesions and language dysfunction, by discussing from split-brain syndromes, hemispheric asymmetry, to pure word dumbness, pure word deafness (verbal auditory agnosia), pure agraphia, and pure word blindness (pure alexia; visual word agnosia), and finally to aphasia and aprosodia in general. Hopefully, after getting familiar with all the terms, the readers will feel free exploring language disturbances and behavi
