Effect of family integrated care on physical growth and language development of premature infants: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Premature birth (PTB) increases the long-term risk of diseases such as hypertension, heart disease, and diabetes in adulthood. It is an independent disease with the largest global burden in terms of high mortality and lifelong negative health impacts. The purpose of this study was to analyze the physical growth and language development of premature infants (PIs) at the age of 18 months, and to explore the impact of family integrated care (FIcare) on PI. METHODS: This study retrospectively included mothers and their PIs born in the Neonatal Pediatrics Department, Affiliated Hospita

Maximizing health literacy and client recall in a developing context: speech-language therapist and client perspectives.

BACKGROUND: In the field of speech-language therapy, limited research has been conducted with regards to health literacy and client recall. However, speech-language therapists frequently provide a considerable amount of information for clients to understand, apply and review in order to manage their (or their child's) health. AIMS: This study aimed to investigate (1) issues around clients' health literacy and recall of information; and (2) how these issues can be overcome in speech-language therapy in a developing context. METHOD & PROCEDURES: An exploratory study was undertaken with specifi

Development of the language subtest in a developmental assessment scale to identify Chinese preschool children with special needs.

This study reports on the development of the language subtest in the Preschool Developmental Assessment Scale (PDAS) for Cantonese-Chinese speaking children. A pilot pool of 158 items covering the two language modalities and the three language domains was developed. This initial item set was subsequently revised based on Rasch analyses of data from 324 multi-stage randomly selected children between 3 and 6 years of age. The revised 106-item set demonstrated adequate measurement properties, including targeting and uni-dimensionality. The revised 106-item set successfully discriminated preschool

The influence of chronic persistent otitis media with effusion on language development of 2- to 4-year-olds.

Literature is not conclusive about the effect of otitis media with effusion (OME) on language development in children. As part of a large epidemiological study on OME in preschool children, language development was measured in 52 children with known history of bilateral OME and in 13 children without OME. The test Reynell Developmental language scales-revised (RDLS-r) was performed by one speech therapist under standard conditions. Verbal comprehension scores were not or only slightly reduced in OME children. Expressive language, however, was significantly lower than the standard with the effe

Early Organization of Simultaneous Multimodal Behaviors: Perception- and Production-Based Contingencies as a Scaffold for Language Development.

AIM: This study investigated how infants' simultaneous multimodal behaviors (SMBs)-the concurrent coordination of vocal, gaze, facial, and manual signals-are organized during natural caregiver-infant interactions at 3 and 6 months. Within a contingency-based framework, we examined how perception-based and production-based SMBs reflect early multisensory and sensorimotor coordination and how these patterns relate to later language development with the aim of characterizing SMBs as functional units of early communicative organization. METHOD: Twenty typically developing Hebrew-learning infants

Large Language Model-Based Interactive Code Generation for Developing a 3D Eye Movement Schematic.

Introduction Understanding the three-dimensional (3D) geometric relationship between extraocular muscles and the globe is essential for strabismus management. Conventional educational tools are static, and existing 3D biomechanical software requires highly specialized skills, making routine clinical use difficult. Furthermore, image-generating artificial intelligence (AI) frequently produces anatomically incorrect outputs (hallucinations). This study aimed to develop a structurally coherent, interactive 3D eye movement schematic as a proof-of-concept, using the coding capabilities of a large l

Re-Evaluating the Role of Statistical Learning: Domain-General Predictors of Language in Typical and Atypical Development.

The ability to detect statistical regularities in the input is widely assumed to support language acquisition, but its unique contribution to individual differences in language outcomes remains uncertain, especially in neurodevelopmental conditions. This study tested whether statistical learning predicts expressive vocabulary and grammatical skills in children with typical development and in groups with developmental language disorder, autism spectrum disorder or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. A total of 102 Hungarian-speaking children aged 8 to 15 years completed tasks assessing st

Development and validation of a pre-trained language model for neonatal morbidities: a retrospective, multicentre, prognostic study.

BACKGROUND: Early identification and monitoring of neonatal morbidities are critical for timely interventions that can prevent complications, optimise resource use, and support families. Although traditional tools based on tabular data and biomarkers are beneficial, they are restricted in assessing the risk of morbidities in newborns. In this study, we developed NeonatalBERT, a pre-trained large language model (LLM) that estimates the risk of neonatal morbidities from clinical notes. METHODS: This prognostic study investigated retrospective primary and external cohorts from two different quat

Exploring the Capacity of Large Language Models to Assess the Chronic Pain Experience: Algorithm Development and Validation.

BACKGROUND: Chronic pain, affecting more than 20% of the global population, has an enormous pernicious impact on individuals as well as economic ramifications at both the health and social levels. Accordingly, tools that enhance pain assessment can considerably impact people suffering from pain and society at large. In this context, assessment methods based on individuals' personal experiences, such as written narratives (WNs), offer relevant insights into understanding pain from a personal perspective. This approach can uncover subjective, intricate, and multifaceted aspects that standardized

Development and Evaluation of a Persian-Language Self-Management Mobile Application for People With Spinal Cord Injury.

INTRODUCTION: Spinal cord injury (SCI) is associated with complex complications and long-term disability. Mobile health applications are crucial for managing their complications and challenges, given their high adoption rate among these patients. While previous studies have developed and evaluated self-management mobile applications for SCI in other languages and contexts, to date, no Persian-language application tailored to the unique needs of individuals with SCI in Iran and other Persian-speaking countries has been published. This study aims to develop and evaluate the short-term usability

A comparison of two dynamic assessment situations for detecting development language disorder in monolingual and bilingual children.

Bilingual children's language skills are strongly influenced by exposure to each of their languages, among other linguistic, environmental, and cognitive factors. In the speech and language therapy clinic, it is difficult to disentangle developmental language disorders from insufficient exposure. Dynamic assessment, which directly tests the learning potential of children, offers a promising solution for this dilemma. This study compares the clinical potential of two dynamic assessment situations, varying amount of adult mediation (autonomous computer game vs. interactive story reading with gra

The Development of the Oncology Center of Excellence Patient-Friendly Language Glossary of Oncology Clinical Trial Terms.

Oncology clinical trials terms and definitions have become increasingly complex, which has led to shortcomings among research staff and healthcare providers in informing clinical trial participants with the study results and consenting procedures in simple language. Understanding oncology clinical trial terms is of critical importance to assist patients and caregivers in making cancer treatment decisions, including enrollment into clinical trials. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) Oncology Center of Excellence (OCE) organized a physician and patient advocate-led focus group, with t

Towards E-textiles in augmentative and alternative communication - user scenarios developed by speech and language therapists.

PURPOSE: E-textiles have been the focus of interest in health technology, but little research has been done so far on how they could support persons with complex communication needs. A global estimate is that 97 million people may benefit from Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). Unfortunately, despite the growing body of research, many persons with complex communication needs are left without functional means to communicate. This study aimed to address the lack of research in textile-based AAC and to build a picture of the issues that affect novel textile-based technology develop

Production of noun suffixes by Turkish-speaking children with developmental language disorder and their typically developing peers.

BACKGROUND: Turkish has a rich system of noun suffixes, and although its complex suffixation system may seem daunting, it can actually present a learning opportunity for children. Despite its unique features, Turkish has not been studied extensively, especially in the case of children with language deficits, such as developmental language disorder (DLD). Most of the extant studies are focused on bilingual children, and the results are somewhat mixed. AIMS: To focus on the noun morphology system of Turkish-speaking preschoolers with DLD and compare their use with that of two groups of typicall

Navigated transcranial magnetic stimulation for preoperative cortical mapping of expressive language in children: Development of a method.

We adjusted an object-naming task with repetitive navigated transcranial magnetic stimulation (rnTMS) originally developed for preoperative cortical language mapping in adults in order for it to be used in children. Two series of pictures were chosen for children above and below 10 years of age, respectively. Firstly, the series of pictures and the preferred speed of presentation were assessed for their applicability in children of different ages and abilities. Secondly, these series were used with rnTMS preoperatively in five children with epilepsy. Naming errors induced by the stimulation co
