A further study of relations between motor impairment and social communication, cognitive, language, functional impairments, and repetitive behavior severity in children with ASD using the SPARK study dataset.

Motor impairments are pervasive and persistent in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) throughout childhood and adolescence. Based on recent studies examining motor impairments in children with ASD between 5 and 15 years (i.e., SPARK study sample), 87-88% of this population is at-risk for a motor impairment, these problems persisted until 15 years, and related to their core (social communication skills and repetitive behaviors [RBs]) and comorbid (language, cognitive, and functional) impairments. Persistent motor impairments extending into adolescence/adulthood could negatively impact

The motor planning abilities of phonologically disordered children.

The motor planning abilities of three subgroups of speech-disordered children were compared to normally speaking age- and comprehension-matched controls. There were 10 phonologically delayed children who used sound-pattern errors typical of chronologically aged younger children (delayed group); 10 children whose phonological system was characterised by the consistent use of non-developmental phonological processes (deviant consistent group); and 10 children whose production of specific lexical items and phonological features was variable (inconsistent group). The groups were compared on tasks

Quantifying the Spectrum of Early Motor and Language Milestones in Sex Chromosome Trisomy.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Sex chromosome trisomy (SCT) is a common chromosomal abnormality associated with increased risks for early developmental delays and neurodevelopmental disorders later in childhood. Our objective was to quantify the spectrum of early developmental milestones in SCT. We hypothesized later milestone achievement in SCT than the general population. METHODS: Data were collected as part of the eXtraordinarY Babies Study, a prospective natural history of developmental and health trajectories in a prenatally identified sample of infants with SCT. Parent-reported, clinician-v

Etiologies and molecular mechanisms of communication disorders.

Quantitative behavioral genetic studies have made it clear that communication disorders such as reading disability, language impairment, and autism spectrum disorders follow some basic principles: (1) complex disorders have complex causes, in which each clinical disorder is influenced by a number of separate genes; and (2) at least some behaviorally related disorders are influenced by the same genes. Recent advances in molecular and statistical methods have confirmed these principles and are now leading to an understanding of the genes that may be involved in these disorders and how their disr

The association of prenatal cocaine exposure with expressive and receptive language skills, phonological processing and reading ability at age 17.

OBJECTIVE: Prenatal cocaine exposure (PCE) has been associated with small but significant effects on language development in childhood and early adolescence. This study examined whether this association persists into later adolescence and what relationship language skills may have with reading proficiency in this population. METHODS: Enrolled were 338 (167 with PCE, 171 with NCE or no cocaine exposure) 17-year-olds recruited at birth who, together with their current caregiver, were seen as part of a 17-year follow-up. Participants were given assessments of reading achievement (WIAT-III), rece

Autism spectrum disorders in Hispanics and non-Hispanics.

OBJECTIVES: To compare differences in autism between Hispanic and non-Hispanics. We also examined the relationship between multiple language exposure and language function and scores of children. METHODS: The Childhood Autism Risks from Genetics and the Environment (CHARGE) study is an ongoing population-based case-control study with children sampled (n=1061) from three strata: those with autism (AU) or autism spectrum disorder (ASD); developmental delay (DD); or the general population (GP). RESULTS: Non-Hispanic cases demonstrated higher cognitive composite scores for the Mullen Scales of E

Word structures of Granada Spanish-speaking preschoolers with typical versus protracted phonological development.

BACKGROUND: Research on children's word structure development is limited. Yet, phonological intervention aims to accelerate the acquisition of both speech-sounds and word structure, such as word length, stress or shapes in CV sequences. Until normative studies and meta-analyses provide in-depth information on this topic, smaller investigations can provide initial benchmarks for clinical purposes. AIMS: To provide preliminary reference data for word structure development in a variety of Spanish with highly restricted coda use: Granada Spanish (similar to many Hispano-American varieties). To be

Contribution of reading an e-book with a dictionary to word learning: Comparison between kindergarteners with and without SLI.

The purpose of the current study was to examine the efficacy of e-book reading to ‎promoting word learning among kindergarteners with specific language impairment ‎‎(SLI) compared to those with typical language development (TLD). We also tested ‎the contribution of three types of dictionary support provided in the e-book. All ‎dictionary words were given a pictorial and auditory support while a third of them ‎were given a short definition, a third were defined using the story content, and a third ‎were given a combined definition. Twenty kindergarteners with SLI and 20 with TLD ‎were read the

Towards a South African model of language-based learning disability.

BACKGROUND: This conceptual article is inspired by the first phase of a doctoral research project that aimed to develop and validate a bilingual language assessment test for IsiZulu-English-speaking children in grades 1, 2 and 3 with language-based learning disabilities (L-b LDs) in South Africa. OBJECTIVES: Phase 1, systematic literature review, pretesting and formulating of a theoretical framework, with the aim to determine early indicators of L-b LDs; this is important for developing a clinical language test as it determines its constructs. Receptive and expressive language characteristics of school-aged children with non-syndromic cleft lip and/or palate.

BACKGROUND: Research investigating language skills in school-aged children with non-syndromic cleft lip and/or palate is sparse. Past studies focus on younger populations, lack key comparisons to demographically matched control cohorts or explore language as a component of broader academic skills. Trends of existing studies suggest that affected children may perform at a lower level compared with typically developing peers. AIMS: To examine the receptive and expressive language skills of middle-school-aged children with non-syndromic cleft lip and palate (CLP) and cleft palate only (CP). Addi

Spelling well despite developmental language disorder: what makes it possible?

The goal of the study was to investigate the overlap between developmental language disorder (DLD) and developmental dyslexia, identified through spelling difficulties (SD), in Russian-speaking children. In particular, we studied the role of phoneme awareness (PA), rapid automatized naming (RAN), pseudoword repetition (PWR), morphological (MA), and orthographic awareness (OA) in differentiating between children with DLD who have SD from children with DLD who are average spellers by comparing the two groups to each other, to typically developing children as well as children with SD but without

[Differential language comprehension disorders: results of an explorative study].

OBJECTIVES: Deficits in the expressive language abilities of children are easily observed. Thus these children usually are detected early and receive appropriate professional help. Receptive language abilities are much more difficult to assess, so that deficits either go unnoticed or often are not treated early. METHODS: In a population of 100 children examined between 1993 and 1995 in the outpatient department for speech, language and behavior problems at the Heckscher Klinik in Munich-Solln and diagnosed as having clinically relevant deficits in language comprehension, we determined the ICD

Two approaches to the facilitation of grammar in children with language impairment: an experimental evaluation.

Two approaches to grammar facilitation in preschool-age children with language impairment were evaluated. One approach was administered by a speech-language pathologist and the other was presented by the subjects' parents, who were trained by the speech-language pathologist. Both treatment packages ran for 4 1/2 months and made use of focused stimulation procedures and a cyclical goal-attack strategy. Subjects were 30 children between the ages of 3:8 and 5:10 (years:months) who had marked delays in grammatical development. Children who served in a delayed-treatment control group averaged no ga

Evaluating the Scope of Language Impairments in a Patient with Triple X Syndrome: A Brief Report.

The phenotype of triple X syndrome comprises a variety of physical, psychiatric, and cognitive features. Recent evidence suggests that patients are prone to severe language impairments. However, it remains unclear whether verbal impairments are pervasive at all levels of language, or whether one domain is relatively more spared than others. Here we document the language profile of one patient with triple X, using standardized language tests and reports. Results concur in showing that impairments are noticeable both in expressive and receptive language skills, and in vocabulary as well as in st

Written language as a window into residual language deficits: a study of children with persistent and residual speech and language impairments.

Previous work has suggested that, because writing is a late-acquired and complex skill, it may be a particularly sensitive index of language difficulties in children. Evidence in support of this view was obtained in a study contrasting 161 normally-developing control children aged from 7.5 to 13 years with 75 twin children of the same age who either had specific speech-language impairments, or were co-twins of affected children. Written narratives were elicited from children using a sequence of five photographs depicting a simple story, and were analysed for grammatical complexity and accuracy

Socioeconomic Deprivation Detrimentally Influences Language Outcomes in Toddlers With Cleft Palate.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of socioeconomic deprivation on language and developmental outcomes in toddlers with cleft palate with or without cleft lip (CP ± L). Other factors known to influence language outcomes were also considered, including home language history, history of hearing problems, syndromic diagnoses, and sex. METHOD: A multicenter, cross-sectional study design was conducted. Data for 566 16-month-old toddlers with CP ± L were collected from 17 outpatient cleft palate clinics located throughout the United States. Outcome measures included the

Unraveling nonliteral meaning: Figurative competence in autism spectrum disorder and dyslexia.

The aim of the current study was to examine figurative competence among upper-elementary Greek-speaking children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and dyslexia compared to typically developing (TD) peers, with a specific focus on how structural language skills (i.e., receptive vocabulary and morphosyntax), nonlinguistic factors (i.e., chronological age and nonverbal reasoning ability), and reading comprehension (RC) contribute to figurative language understanding. A total of 105 children (35 per group; M = 10.5 years, SD = 1), matched for age, gender, and nonverbal reasoning ability had part

Learning of Grammar-Like Sequences by Children With Developmental Language Disorder: An Electrophysiological Examination.

PURPOSE: Developmental language disorder (DLD) is a prevalent neurodevelopmental condition that affects approximately 7% of children in the United States. One notable characteristic of DLD is difficulty in mastering nonadjacent dependencies, such as the third-person singular -s or passive construction be -ed. This study examines behavioral and electrophysiological measures of nonadjacent dependencies learning in children with DLD in the context of a visual grammar-like learning paradigm. METHOD: Fifty-one children (22 DLD, 29 typical language development [TD]) aged 8;0-12;4 (years;months) com

Learning science concepts alongside language goals: A telehealth replication of a randomised controlled trial examining whether children with developmental language disorder can learn vocabulary or grammar in combination with curricular science content.

PURPOSE: We asked whether children with developmental language disorder can learn vocabulary or grammar targets and curricular content simultaneously. We replicated prior work integrating two language interventions into a first-grade science curriculum and extended it by testing delivery via teletherapy. METHOD: A parallel arm randomised controlled trial was conducted using telehealth approaches. Children aged 4-7years with developmental language disorder were randomly assigned to one of three arms, science-only (n = 13), science plus grammar (n = 11), and science plus vocabulary (n = 10), wi
