International journal of language & communication disorders2016eng
BACKGROUND: Clinicians globally recognize as exceptionally challenging the development of effective intervention practices for bi- or multilingual children with specific language impairment (SLI). Therapy in both or all of an impaired child's languages is rarely possible. An alternative is to develop treatment protocols that facilitate the transfer of therapy effects from a treated language to an untreated language.
AIMS: To explore whether cognates, words that share meaning and phonological features across languages, could be used to boost lexical retrieval in the context of multilingual SLI

Despite intensive research on mechanisms of recovery of function after stroke, surprisingly little is known about determinants of concurrent recovery of language and motor functions in single patients. The alternative hypotheses are that the two functions might either "fight for resources" or use the same mechanisms in the recovery process. Here, we present follow-up data of four exemplary patients with different base levels of motor and language abilities. We assessed functional scales and performed exact lesion analysis to examine the connection between lesion parameters and recovery potenti

BACKGROUND: The Preschool Speech and Language Program (PSLP) in Ontario, Canada, is a publically funded intervention service for children from birth to 5 years with communication disorders. It has begun a population-level programme evaluation of children's communicative participation outcomes following therapy. Data are currently being collected for all children who access this service--over 50,000 children each year.
AIMS: To understand and evaluate how therapeutic interventions in speech-language therapy impact the everyday lives of children and families by applying a theoretical framework.

INTRODUCTION: With a prevalence of around 7.6%, developmental language disorders (DLDs) without comorbidities are among the most common and most frequently treated childhood disorders. Standard DLD therapy in Germany consists of individual therapy sessions once per week within speech-language therapy practices. In reality, these sessions only take place every 10-14 days on average. Online therapy may be beneficial but is not yet standard practice in Germany. Although DLD group therapy has been proven to be effective, it is rarely undertaken in Germany. The aim of this study is to compare the e

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to classify and analyze trends in the assessment and training methods used in telepractice speech-language therapy (Tele-SLT) for people with aphasia (PWA), according to the type of Tele-SLT (synchronous, asynchronous, or combined). This study particularly aimed to identify gaps that prevent the establishment of Tele-SLT, a field that has gained significant attention post-COVID-19 pandemic.
DESIGN: A scoping review was conducted following the PRISMA-ScR guidelines.
SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Included were research articles on Tele-SLT for individuals age

Speech language therapists (SLTs) are often challenged in their work with patients with different communication vulnerabilities. Even though SLTs are trained experts in communication, experiences from the field indicate that they often feel uncertain in interactions with multilingual patients and their families. This paper explores how language discordance between SLTs and multilingual parents influences regular institutional interaction. A discourse analysis is conducted on 33 authentic transcripts of specific discourse types between SLTs, parents, and their children within a multilingual con

ObjectiveThis pilot study sought to determine whether adolescent and adult patients benefit from weekly cleft-specific speech language therapy (SLT) services, and to understand how concurrent psychology clinic services influence patient-reported outcomes.MethodsTwelve patients (12 y+) with cleft-related speech concerns were seen at the University of Canterbury Speech and Psychology clinics in 2023. Patients elected to receive SLT and psychology services in-person, online, or a combination of both. Patient-reported outcome measures of speech function, intelligibility and acceptability, speech d

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent measures to reduce transmission risk has led to unprecedented digital transformation across health, education and social care services. This includes UK paediatric speech and language therapy (SLT), which sits at the crossroads of these services. Given the rapid onset of this pandemic-induced digital transition, there is now a need to capture, reflect and learn from the SLT profession so that benefits can be sustained, and barriers addressed.
AIMS: To survey the impact of COVID-19 remote working on UK paediatric SLTs' digital views and experien

PURPOSE: To evaluate the prevalence and treatment patterns of speech and language disorders in Germany.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of data collected from 32% of the German population, insured by the statutory German health insurance (AOK, Local Health Care Funds). We used The International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 10th revision, German Modification (ICD-10 GM) codes for stuttering (F98.5), cluttering (F98.6), and developmental disorders of speech and language (F80) to identify prevalent and newly diagnosed cases each year. This study examined parent couples' participation in and satisfaction with speech-language therapy for school-age children with autism spectrum disorder in the United States. Responses from 40 father-mother couples (n = 80 parents) were examined across therapy components (i.e. parent-therapist communication, assessment, planning, and intervention). Descriptive frequencies, chi-square tests, intraclass correlations, and dyadic multilevel modeling were used to examine participation across fathers and mothers and within parent couples. Compared to mothers, fathers communicated less with therapist

BACKGROUND: Clinicians in the UK rely mainly on informal observations and structured and semi-structured tasks rather than standardized testing in their assessments of pre-school children referred with speech and language difficulties. The informal nature of the clinical decision-making process at this age is unsurprising given the dearth of research on early clinical referrals. Evidence of outcome for young children referred with speech and language problems typically begins in the early school years.
AIMS: To examine the clinical decision-making of an experienced individual therapist by eva

20 subjects with traumatic brain injury were tested over a 4-wk. period for aggressive behaviors; orientation to place, person, and time; and compliance in speech-language therapy sessions. Analysis showed significant correlations from .63 to .75 over the four sessions between orientation and compliance in speech-language therapy and suggest that orientation training could be a prerequisite to the formal treatment of other behavioral or communication disorders.

BACKGROUND: In order to conduct research that is meaningful to speech and language therapy services and their patients, it is often desirable to conduct the research within routine clinical services. This can require considerable time and commitment from speech and language therapists (SLTs). It is therefore important to understand the impact that such participation in research can have.
AIMS: To explore the impact of research participation in the Big CACTUS study of self-managed computerized aphasia therapy conducted in 21 UK NHS speech and language therapy departments.

Carbohydrates, far beyond their nutritional role, are fundamental biomolecules that encode biological information and mediate critical cellular interactions. In pathogenic fungi, cell wall (CW) glycans serve as both a protective armor and a dynamic interface with the host, directly influencing virulence and immune evasion. This review discusses the intricate architecture and composition of the CW in the four WHO-critical priority fungal pathogens: Aspergillus fumigatus, Candidozyma auris, Cryptococcus neoformans, and Candida albicans. We detail how distinct carbohydrate polymers, including α-

Elucidating the mechanisms of successful word retrieval by anomia therapy could improve our knowledge about language processing and also help design effective treatments. The two main subcomponents of resting-state networks related to language processing are the default mode network (DMN) and the language network (LN). To study how changes in brain activation occur due to anomia therapy, we investigated pre-and-post changes in the DMN and LN activation nodes in a deficit-based treatment of 15 persons with aphasia (PWAs). In this method, seven participants (mean age 46.71 ± 8.99) with predomina

BACKGROUND: For stroke, traumatic brain injury (TBI), and other neurologic conditions associated with speech-language disorders, speech and language therapy is the standard of care for promoting recovery. However, barriers such as clinician time constraints and insurance reimbursement can inhibit a patient's ability to receive the support needed to optimize functional gain. Although digital rehabilitation has the potential to increase access to therapy by allowing patients to practice at home, the clinical and demographic characteristics that impact a patient's level of engagement with technol

BACKGROUND: Our hospital did not provide a weekly speech and language therapy (SLT) service for head and neck cancer patients during radiotherapy treatment. SLT is recommended in the international guidelines, but many centers do not offer this service. In the case of our hospital, SLT was not provided because there were no funds to cover the costs of additional staff.
OBJECTIVES: To create a new service model within a multidisciplinary setting to comply with the international SLT guidelines and without increasing staff. We aimed to measure the accessibility and efficiency of a new model of se
