OBJECTIVE: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common cause of abnormal results of liver function tests. Earlier research showed that polyenylphosphatidylcholine (PPC) has hepatoprotective effects and thus can be used for the treatment of NAFLD and the prevention of its progression. Accordingly, the aim of this observational study was to evaluate if PPC administered as adjunctive therapy in routine clinical practice can effectively improve liver function tests of NAFLD in Russian patients with associated metabolic comorbidities.

OBJECTIVES: Cholecystectomy with or without intraoperative cholangiogram (IOC) is an accepted treatment for cholelithiasis. Up to 11.6 % of cholecystectomies have incidental common bile duct (CBD) stones on IOC and 25.3 % of undiagnosed CBD stones will develop life-threatening complications. These will require additional intervention after primary cholecystectomy, further straining the healthcare system. We seek to examine the role of IOC in patients with normal LFTs by evaluating its predictive values, intending to treat undiagnosed CBD stones and therefore ameliorate these issues.

BACKGROUND: While highly active anti-retroviral therapy (HAART) has improved survival of HIV-infected patients, there is increasing liver disease and progressive Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) and Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) related liver disease.
AIMS: To study the liver function tests (LFT) and HBV and HCV co-infection in HIV-infected patients.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: All HIV-positive patients presenting to a tertiary level hospital from April 2009 to April 2011 were evaluated. Baseline LFT, CD4/CD8 counts, ultrasound abdomen, HBsAg, IgG anti-HBc, HBVDNA, Anti-HCV and HCVRNA were done in all patients.

An epidemic of infectious hepatitis involving 99 patients and employees of a state mental hospital revealed Australia antigen Au(1) to be absent from the blood of all but one of the subjects when tested at six weeks, three months, nine months and 12 to 18 months after onset of jaundice. The single patient with Au(1) at 12 months had no enzyme abnormality to indicate residual liver disease. If Au(1) is the virus of hepatitis these data would support the concept that persistent or long standing viremia is not a feature of epidemic hepatitis. The pattern of liver function test abnormalities was examined during total parenteral nutrition (TPN), using both dextrose and fat emulsions as caloric sources, in 92 patients with inflammatory bowel disease.
