Luteolin Attenuates Hypertension via Inhibiting NF-κB-Mediated Inflammation and PI3K/Akt Signaling Pathway in the Hypothalamic Paraventricular Nucleus.

BACKGROUND: Luteolin is widely distributed among a number of vegetal species worldwide. The pharmacological effects of luteolin are diverse and amongst antioxidant, free radical scavenging, and anti-inflammatory activities. Preliminary study showed that luteolin can ameliorate hypertension. However, the precise mechanism needs further investigation. There is no evidence that luteolin affects the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus (PVN), a brain nucleus associated with a critical neural regulator of blood pressure. Our main aim was to explore the effect of luteolin on the PI3K/Akt/NF-κ

Artesunate-quercetin/luteolin dual drug nanofacilitated synergistic treatment for malaria: A plausible approach to overcome artemisinin combination therapy resistance.

Malaria is one of the major global health challenge with 300 million new cases annually. The best regimen for treating Plasmodium falciparum induced malaria is based on artemisinin and its derivatives which were prescribed as artemisinin combination therapy (ACT). These are highly effective drugs resulting in rapid clearance of parasites even in severe P. falciparum induced malaria patients. However, from the past few years parasites resistant to ACT's have begun to emerge in various parts of the world such as Cambodia and Greater Mekong Subregion. Currently, the ACT's resistance is comparativ

Luteolin suppresses inflammation-associated gene expression by blocking NF-kappaB and AP-1 activation pathway in mouse alveolar macrophages.

Luteolin, a plant flavonoid, has potent anti-inflammatory properties both in vitro and in vivo. However, the molecular mechanism of luteolin-mediated immune modulation has not been fully understood. In this study, we examined the effects of luteolin on the production of nitric oxide (NO) and prostaglandin E(2) (PGE(2)), as well as the expression of inducible NO synthase (iNOS), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), and interleukin-6 (IL-6) in mouse alveolar macrophage MH-S and peripheral macrophage RAW 264.7 cells. Luteolin dose-dependently inhibited the expression

An insight into the antioxidant activities and the exploration of record high quantities of quercetin and luteolin in the plant parts of Myxopyrum smilacifolium (wall.) Blume.

This study attempts to reveal antioxidants in the plant parts of Myxopyrum smilacifolium (Wall.) Blume using antioxidant assays and LC-MS/MS analysis. Methanol is the most effective solvent for collecting antioxidants. The roots-derived methanol extract demonstrates the greatest antioxidant activity, corresponding to the extremely low IC50 values of 16.39 µg/mL and 19.80 µg/mL for DPPH and ABTS radicals, respectively. The high phenolic and flavonoid contents are the primary reason for outstanding total antioxidant capacity (TAC; i.e. 247.73 ± 1.62 mg GA/g or 163.93 ± 0.83 mg AS/g) of the root

Targeted intestinal delivery of luteolin microcapsules as a precision nutritional strategy to alleviate heat stress and enhance growth performance in broilers.

Heat stress (HS) poses a significant threat to poultry production by impairing the growth and health of broilers. Luteolin (Lut) is a natural flavonoid with potent antioxidant properties. In vitro, Lut mitigated HS-induced oxidative injury and reactive oxygen species accumulation, decreased p38 MAPK phosphorylation, and downregulated Hsp70 expression. To improve its delivery, pH‑dependent spray‑dried microcapsules were engineered using tributyrin as a functional carrier. A 30-day oral toxicity study in mice confirmed the safety of Lut microcapsules at doses up to 10 g/kg/day. The efficacy of L

Dose-dependent manner of luteolin in the modulation of spatial memory with respect to the hippocampal level of HSP70 and HSP90 in sleep-deprived rats.

Sleep deprivation (SD) induces a variety of deleterious effects on different cognitive functions such as memory. Elevated neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, and apoptosis, and decreased synaptic plasticity and antioxidant capacity are involved in the deleterious effects of SD on memory. On the other hand, luteolin (a flavonoid compound) has antioxidant, neuroprotective, and anti-inflammatory properties. Also, Heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) and Heat shock protein 90 (HSP90) can be involved in modulating memory. In this study, we aimed to assess the effects of SD and luteolin on spatial learnin

The flavonoid luteolin inhibits Fcγ-dependent respiratory burst in granulocytes, but not skin blistering in a new model of pemphigoid in adult mice.

Bullous pemphigoid is an autoimmune blistering skin disease associated with autoantibodies against the dermal-epidermal junction. Passive transfer of antibodies against BP180/collagen (C) XVII, a major hemidesmosomal pemphigoid antigen, into neonatal mice results in dermal-epidermal separation upon applying gentle pressure to their skin, but not in spontaneous skin blistering. In addition, this neonatal mouse model precludes treatment and observation of diseased animals beyond 2-3 days. Therefore, in the present study we have developed a new disease model in mice reproducing the spontaneous bl
