Subacute and acute fasciolosis in sheep in southern Brazil.

Eight outbreaks of acute and subacute fasciolosis are reported in sheep in the municipality of Santa Vitória do Palmar, southern Brazil, in areas used for irrigated rice cultivation, which are subject to frequent flooding. Two outbreaks occurred mid-winter during July and August, and six occurred during spring and early summer. Morbidity ranged from 3 to 66.7 %, and mortality ranged from 3 to 50 %. Clinical signs included weight loss, mucosal pallor, apathy, depression, muscle tremors, and drooling; these were followed by death within approximately 24 h. Some sheep were found dead. Gross lesio

Determination of zones at risk for fasciolosis in the department of Haute-Vienne, central France: a retrospective study on natural infections detected in 108,481 Galba truncatula for 37 years.

A retrospective study on the natural infection of Galba truncatula by Fasciola hepatica was carried out in the French department of Haute-Vienne to determine whether there are areas at risk for fasciolosis. Adult snails included in this analysis came from samples collected from pastures on 259 farms and from 121 wild watercress beds between 1970 and 2006. Fasciola hepatica infection rates were examined in relation to altitude and climatic data (mean annual rainfall, mean annual temperature) of each municipality. In a total of 108,481 snails collected in 151 municipalities, the overall prevalen

Observations on the repeated treatment for fascioliasis of stock on a farm in south-west England.

The effects of a programme of repeated dosing of all stock for fascioliasis over a four year period on a north Devon farm is described. There was a decline in the average percentage of infection. Observations on the snail intermediate host and on a neighbouring farm suggested that at least some of the improvement was due to environmental factors. Although at the end of the period the level of infection was lower, there was no evidence that further intensification of the programme would lead to eradication.

First molecular identification of an agent of diplostomiasis, Diplostomum pseudospathaceum (Niewiadomska 1984) in the United Kingdom and its genetic relationship with populations in Europe.

Trematode genus Diplostomum comprises of parasitic species which cause diplostomiasis, the 'white eye' disease in fish and heavy infection can result in mortality. The increasing availability of DNA sequences of accurately identified Diplostomum species on public data base presently enables the rapid identification of species from novel sequences. We report the first molecular evidence of the occurrence of D. pseudospathaceum in the United Kingdom. Two gene regions, nuclear internal transcribed spacer cluster (ITS1-5.8S-ITS2) and mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) of cercariae

Radiation-induced cytogenetic and hematologic effects on aquatic biota within the Chernobyl exclusion zone.

During 1998-2014 the rate of chromosomal aberrations in embryo tissues of the pond snail (Lymnaea stagnalis) and root meristems of higher aquatic plants, and also hematologic indexes of mantle liquid of the adult snails and peripheral blood of fishes in water bodies within the Chernobyl exclusion zone (EZ) was studied. The absorbed dose rate for hydrobionts from water bodies of the EZ registered in a range from 0.25 to 420 μGy h(-1) and in the reference ones - up to 0.09 μGy h(-1). The level of chromosomal aberrations in the molluscs from the most contaminated water bodies of the EZ was regist

Insights into the relationships of Palearctic and Nearctic lymnaeids (Mollusca: Gastropoda) by rDNA ITS-2 sequencing and phylogeny of stagnicoline intermediate host species of Fasciola hepatica.

Fascioliasis by Fasciola hepatica is the vector-borne disease presenting the widest latitudinal, longitudinal and altitudinal distribution known. F. hepatica shows a great adaptation power to new environmental conditions which is the consequence of its own capacities together with the adaptation and colonization abilities of its specific vector hosts, freshwater snails of the family Lymnaeidae. Several lymnaeid species only considered as secondary contributors to the liver fluke transmission have, however, played a very important role in the geographic expansion of this disease. Many of them b

Morphological and molecular characterization of Neotropic Lymnaeidae (Gastropoda: Lymnaeoidea), vectors of fasciolosis.

Lymnaeidae play a crucial role in the transmission of fasciolosis, a disease of medical and veterinary importance. In the Neotropic, a region where fasciolosis is emergent, eight Lymnaeidae species are currently considered valid. However, our knowledge of the diversity of this taxon is hindered by the fact that lymnaeids exhibit extremely homogeneous anatomical traits. Because most species are difficult to identify using classic taxonomy, it is difficult to establish an epidemiological risk map of fasciolosis in the Neotropic. In this paper, we contribute to our understanding of the diversity

MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry: a new tool for rapid identification of cercariae (Trematoda, Digenea).

Identification of cercariae was long based on morphological and morphometric features, but these approaches remain difficult to implement and require skills that have now become rare. Molecular tools have become the reference even though they remain relatively time-consuming and expensive. We propose a new approach for the identification of cercariae using MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. Snails of different genera (Radix, Lymnaea, Stagnicola, Planorbis, and Anisus) were collected in the field to perform emitting tests in the laboratory. The cercariae they emitted (Trichobilharzia anseri, Diplosto

Problem of fascioliasis in animal husbandry in Thailand.

One of the most important parasitic diseases in adult cattle and buffalo in Thailand is fascioliasis, caused mainly by Fasciola gigantica. The economic loss from fascioliasis in cattle and buffalo throughout Thailand has been assessed at not less than 100 million Baht. Recent investigations have been shown that the average prevalence of F. gigantica in cattle and buffalo in Thailand was 11.8%. However, the prevalence varies considerably between villages, ranging from 0 to 85%. The prevalence is high in areas surrounding dams or large ponds in which Lymnaea auricularia rubiginosa, the intermedi

Population genetic structure in a self-compatible hermaphroditic snail is driven by drift independently of its contemporary mating system.

Genetic drift, gene flow, and natural selection commonly influence population genetic diversity. In populations of self-compatible hermaphrodites, the mating system (e.g., self-fertilization) further reduces individual heterozygosity. Furthermore, selfing, as a form of inbreeding, significantly impacts genetic drift by reducing effective population size (N e). This can potentially accelerate genetic drift, particularly in small populations where self-fertilization is likely during founder events. To investigate the roles of genetic drift and contemporary mating system in populations of the fre

A novel schistosome species hosted by Planorbella (Helisoma) trivolvis is the most widespread swimmer's itch-causing parasite in Michigan inland lakes.

Cercarial dermatitis (‘swimmer's itch’; SI), characterized by small itchy bumps caused by schistosome parasites of birds and mammals, is a common problem in Michigan. Research on avian schistosomes began nearly 100 years ago in Michigan inland lakes, yet scientists are still uncovering basic biological information including the identification of local snail and parasite species that cause SI. Previous research primarily focused on lakes in the northern half of Michigan's lower peninsula, although SI occurs throughout the state. We surveyed snails and snail-borne trematodes in lakes across Mich

Pharmacokinetics and efficacy of long-term low-level administration of triclabendazole in urea molasses blocks against induced bovine and bubaline fasciolosis.

The pharmacokinetics and flukicidal efficacy of triclabendazole delivered in low doses on a daily basis through urea molasses blocks were studied in cattle and buffaloes experimentally infected with Fasciola gigantica. The observations were compared with single therapeutic doses at 12.0 and 24.0 mg/kg body weight in cattle and buffaloes, respectively, prior to becoming experimentally infected. After receipt of triclabendazole by cattle and buffaloes at 0.83 and 3.0 mg/kg body weight, respectively, on a daily basis, both the animal species exhibited equilibrium between its absorption and dispos

Ovine internal parasitism in the Yemen Arab Republic.

Internal parasitism was studied in five flocks in different regions of the Yemen Arab Republic. Ewes and lambs were faeces sampled from the spring of 1977 to the spring of 1978 and helminth-free tracer lambs were subsequently run with three of the flocks from October 1978 to November 1979. The findings indicated that ovine helminthiasis and fascioliasis may be of importance with the following regional variations: Haemonchosis all the year round in the Tihammah coastal plain. Haemonchosis and trichostrongylosis in the periparturient period in the Southern Uplands and Western Foothills. Fascioli

Sequence Localization of SeGPx in S. digitata Genome Contigs and Determination of its Presence in the Whole Worm Extract.

PURPOSE: Lymphatic filariasis, caused by three major filarial species, is marked by immune evasion strategies involving antioxidant enzymes. The role of selenium-dependent glutathione peroxidase (SeGPx) in this process remains underexplored. This study aimed to identify and characterise SeGPx in Setaria digitata, a genomic analogue of Wuchereria bancrofti, and evaluate its potential as a diagnostic antigen. METHODS: segpx sequences were identified through bioinformatics tools, including BLAST and UniProt databases. Due to limited nematode entries, a validated SeGPx sequence from Lymnaea stagn

Phylogenetic analysis of avian schistosome Trichobilharzia regenti (Schistosomatidae, Digenea) from naturally infected hosts in northern Iran.

BACKGROUND: Trichobilharzia regenti (T. regenti) is an avian schistosomatid fluke species that causes human cercarial dermatitis (HCD) in areas of aquaculture in northern Iran. Understanding the phylogenetic relationships and genetic diversity of this thread-like fluke will deepen our thoughtful of avian schistosomiasis epidemiology and lead to more effective HCD control in the region. OBJECTIVES: To determine the life cycle of nasal Trichobilharzia in aquatic birds as well as aquatic snails and also identify the haplotype diversity of the isolates in Mazandaran Province, northern Iran. Early shell field morphogenesis of a patellogastropod mollusk predominantly relies on cell movement and F-actin dynamics.

BACKGROUND: The morphogenesis of the shell field is an essential step of molluscan shell formation, which exhibits both conserved features and interlineage variations. As one major gastropod lineage, the patellogastropods show different characters in its shell field morphogenesis compared to other gastropods (e.g., the pulmonate gastropod Lymnaea stagnalis), likely related to its epibolic gastrulation. The investigation on the shell field morphogenesis of patellogastropods would be useful to reveal the lineage-specific characters in the process and explore the deep conservation among different

Thermal preferences of bird schistosome snail hosts increase the risk of swimmer's itch.

Ambient temperature strongly affects host parasite interactions, especially when both are ectothermic. Bird schistosomes, which cercariae are known as agents of swimmer's itch and their snail hosts can be a good example of this phenomenon. The snails of these parasites play the key role, as the source of harmful larvae. Cercarial dermatitis is noted even in areas when prevalence of parasites in snail populations is very low. The main question is what adaptation in snail-fluke association can lead to a sufficient number of cercariae causing swimmer's itch in lake water? The influence of ambient
