Rift Valley Fever - epidemiological update and risk of introduction into Europe.

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a vector-borne disease transmitted by a broad spectrum of mosquito species, especially Aedes and Culex genus, to animals (domestic and wild ruminants and camels) and humans. Rift Valley fever is endemic in sub-Saharan Africa and in the Arabian Peninsula, with periodic epidemics characterised by 5-15 years of inter-epizootic periods. In the last two decades, RVF was notified in new African regions (e.g. Sahel), RVF epidemics occurred more frequently and low-level enzootic virus circulation has been demonstrated in livestock in various areas. Recent outbreaks in a Fren

Global, regional, and national survey on burden and Quality of Care Index (QCI) of orofacial clefts: Global burden of disease systematic analysis 1990-2019.

BACKGROUND: Orofacial clefts are the most common craniofacial anomalies that include a variety of conditions affecting the lips and oral cavity. They remain a significant global public health challenge. Despite this, the quality of care for orofacial clefts has not been investigated at global and country levels. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to measure the quality-of-care index (QCI) for orofacial clefts worldwide. METHODS: We used the 2019 Global Burden of Disease data to create a multifactorial index (QCI) to assess orofacial clefts globally and nationally. By utilizing data on incidence, prevalence

Reporting radiographers within the European Federation of Radiographer Society (EFRS) member countries - motivation for becoming a reporting radiographer.

INTRODUCTION: Radiographer-led reporting originated in the United Kingdom as a strategy to reduce reporting backlog and time taken to report images. The effectiveness of reporting radiographers has been demonstrated, but their motivational factors have not been thoroughly explored. This survey aims to understand the incentives for radiographers to pursue postgraduate education in reporting radiography across Europe. METHODS: An online survey was conducted, collecting data across a range of topics such as demographic information, professional role, and job satisfaction. Questions assessing the

Repositioning of the global epicentre of non-optimal cholesterol.

High blood cholesterol is typically considered a feature of wealthy western countries1,2. However, dietary and behavioural determinants of blood cholesterol are changing rapidly throughout the world3 and countries are using lipid-lowering medications at varying rates. These changes can have distinct effects on the levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and non-HDL cholesterol, which have different effects on human health4,5. However, the trends of HDL and non-HDL cholesterol levels over time have not been previously reported in a global analysis. Here we pooled 1,127 population-b

Astringent drugs for bleedings and diarrhoea: The history of Cynomorium coccineum (Maltese Mushroom).

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: The botanical identity of the ancient vernacular cynomorium does not correspond to the modern scientific genus while it is not clear how many species of hipocistis (Cytinus sp.) were differentiated by the ancient physicians and whether Cynomorium coccineum was subsumed. The early history of therapeutic uses related to the herbal drugs derived from these parasitic taxa is therefore not easily accessible. Cynomorium coccineum became an important pharmaceutical commodity after the Siege of Malta but its importance decreased in the 18th century and now is considered

Maxillary canine anomalies and tooth agenesis.

The aims of the study were to analyse the records of 26 subjects (18 females, eight males) with maxillary canine-first premolar transposition (Mx.C.P1) together with 160 subjects with a palatally displaced canine (PDC) to determine the pattern of tooth agenesis in these cases and to compare them with similar samples reported in the literature. A strong association between Mx.C.P1, lateral incisor and lower second premolar agenesis was found, with a 20 per cent prevalence of lateral incisor agenesis and a 24 per cent prevalence of lower second premolar agenesis. There was a lesser association w

Dementia knowledge, attitudes and training needs of speech-language pathology students and practitioners: A countrywide study.

BACKGROUND: Due to dementia-related communication difficulties, speech-language pathologists (SLPs) play a significant role in supporting individuals with dementia and their caregivers. Nevertheless, SLP practitioners may not have received adequate dementia training during their undergraduate programme and skills updating post-qualification. Investigating the knowledge, attitudes and training needs of SLP students and practitioners would provide evidence on the need of enhancing training in dementia care and management at both the undergraduate level and through continuous professional develop

Comparative in vivo expression of beta(+)-thalassemia alleles.

Double heterozygotes who inherit one abnormal though stable beta-globin variant in association with a molecularly identified beta(+)-thalassaemia allele provide unique opportunities to quantify the in vivo expression of particular beta(+)-thalassemia alleles. The globin products of the two alleles can be separated, quantified and the output of the beta(+)-thalassaemia allele expressed as the MCH-beta(A) in pg beta(A)-globin/beta(+)-thalassemia allele/RBC = 0.5 MCH x Hb A%. In this communication we provide new quantitative data on the expression of five mutations as follows: the beta(+)-87 (C--

Association between culture and the preference for, and perceptions of, 11 routes of medicine administration: A survey in 21 countries and regions.

Medicines can be taken by various routes of administration. These can impact the effects and perceptions of medicines. The literature about individuals' preferences for and perceptions of the different routes of administration is sparse, but indicates a potential influence of culture. Our aim was to determine: (i) any association between one's culture and one's preferred route of medicine administration and (ii) individual perceptions of pain, efficacy, speed of action and acceptability when medicines are swallowed or placed in the mouth, under the tongue, in the nose, eye, ear, lungs, rectum,

Diagnostic accuracy of point-of-care ultrasound (PoCUS) for shoulder dislocations and reductions in the emergency department: a diagnostic randomised control trial (RCT).

BACKGROUND: Following blunt trauma, diagnosis of shoulder dislocation based on physical examination alone is difficult due to possible concurrent proximal humeral fractures. X-rays are therefore used to confirm diagnosis. Results from recent observational studies comparing diagnostic accuracy of point-of-care ultrasound (PoCUS) with X-rays for shoulder dislocation have been encouraging. The aim of this study was to determine whether PoCUS improves diagnostic accuracy when used with physical examination for the diagnosis of shoulder dislocation, proximal humeral fracture and ascertaining succes

Development, content validation and pilot reliability testing of the midwives' perspectives towards birth plans questionnaire.

INTRODUCTION: A birth plan is a fundamental tool for promoting autonomy during childbirth and woman-centred care. Despite its recognised benefits, there is a notable gap in the literature addressing midwives' perspectives and attitudes towards their use, with research being predominantly qualitative and quantitative data remaining scarce due to a lack of rigorously developed quantitative instruments addressing this topic. To address this, the Midwives' Perspectives Towards Birth Plans Questionnaire (MBPQ) was developed to provide a content-validated descriptive instrument to profile midwives'

The Lived Experience of Adult Patients on Mechanical Ventilation: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Mechanical ventilation (MV) is a frequently used lifesaving treatment in intensive care units (ICUs); yet, earlier research suggests that it may expose patients to unpleasant physiological and psychological stressors. While international literature characterises MV as distressing, limited research has explored these experiences within the specific sociocultural context of Maltese and Mediterranean ICUs. AIMS: To explore the lived experience of adults who received MV during an ICU stay and how they made sense of this unique experience. STUDY DESIGN: A qualitative approach was adop

Infective Endocarditis and Excessive Use of B- Blood Type Due to Surgical Treatment-Is It Only a Local Problem? LODZ-ENDO Results (2015-2025).

Background/Objectives: Infective endocarditis (IE) remains a rare but increasingly complex condition, posing significant challenges for cardiologists and cardiac surgeons. Blood groups from the ABO/Rh system have been associated with susceptibility to various diseases, including infections and bacterial colonization tendencies. However, data on the distribution of ABO/Rh blood types among IE patients are lacking. We hypothesized that the prevalence of ABO/Rh blood types among IE patients differs from their frequency in the general population. This study aimed to assess the distribution of ABO/

Happiness across the borders-A cross-sectional study among patients with psoriasis and atopic dermatitis in Europe.

BACKGROUND: Dermatological research has traditionally concentrated on evaluating mental comorbidities, neglecting positive concepts like happiness. Initial studies indicate that psoriasis and atopic dermatitis (AD) impair the happiness of those affected. Considering global happiness variations, this study aimed to explore the disease- and country-specific differences in disease-related quality of life and happiness, and potential influential factors on heuristic happiness among psoriasis and AD patients in Europe. METHODS: A cross-sectional multicentre study was conducted in dermatology depar
