Efficiency of physical therapy and osteopathic techniques in the treatment of operated and recurrent lumbar disc herniation - A case report.

Disc herniation is defined as focal or localized displacement of disc material beyond the margins of the intervertebral space. The incidence of disc herniation has been constantly increasing, with the disease affecting between 60 and 90% of the population aged between 30 and 50 years. The research objective was to achieve, apply and highlight the efficiency of a therapeutic program, based on osteopathic and physical therapy techniques, in the treatment and prophylaxis of recurrent lumbar disc herniation. For evaluation, we used: the MRI, the Lasegue test and the "The Oswestry Disability Index"

Complicated Withdrawal Phenomena During Benzodiazepine Cessation in Older Adults.

The cause of prolonged or recurrent symptoms following the cessation of long-term benzodiazepine use is proposed to be related to downregulation and allosteric decoupling of the γ-aminobutyric acid/benzodiazepine receptor complex. This case series describes 2 patients with prolonged (>2 weeks) recurrent complications during attempted tapering of benzodiazepine doses after long-term treatment. Excited catatonia developed in a 90-year-old woman, and prolonged delirium developed in a 69-year-old woman. Both patients showed improvement of symptoms after resumption of higher doses of benzodiazepine

Frequency of complications of manipulation of the spine. A survey among the members of the Swiss Medical Society of Manual Medicine.

A survey of all members of the Swiss Medical Association of Manual Medicine was undertaken for the year 1989. Informative data were given by 425 respondents on the frequency of complications of manipulation as related to the spine. The number of thoraco-lumbar manipulations during 1989 (225 working days) was 805 for each respondent, and the number manipulations of the cervical spine 354. Thus, the total number of thoraco-lumbar manipulations was 342125, and the total number of cervical manipulations was 150450. The overall incidence of side-effects of transient complications due to cervical sp

Novel variant of common variable immunodeficiency.

A 57-year-old woman with frequent respiratory infections was initially diagnosed with IgG subclass deficiency based on low levels of IgG subclasses 2 and 3. Three years later, she progressed to having IgA deficiency as well. With a normal total IgG level, she does not meet criteria for common variable immunodeficiency (CVID). This may represent a variant of CVID. This also highlights the importance of immunoglobulin subclass estimation in patients where immunodeficiency is suspected clinically. She is being treated with rotational antibiotics the first 10 days of every month, monthly intraveno

Myofascial release of carpal tunnel syndrome.

Current treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome may be ineffective or associated with complications or recurrence. In the case reported here, a myofascial release by the physician combined with the patient's self-stretch reduced pain and numbness and improved electromyographic results. The manipulative approach releases the transverse carpal ligament,-and "opens" or dilates the canal. The patient stretches the wrist, digits, and thumb, including myofascial components. An aggressive, conservative approach lessens the need for surgery in mild to moderate cases. Studies with magnetic resonance imagi

Palpatory diagnosis and manipulative management of carpal tunnel syndrome.

Carpal tunnel syndrome was studied by use of supplemental palpatory diagnosis in 20 abnormal wrists. Restriction in motion at the carpal tunnel was quantified with a rating system. All wrists with carpal tunnel syndrome revealed at least moderate restriction to motion, as compared with only mild or no restriction in 20 wrists in normal, symptom-free subjects. Several participants (16 abnormal wrists) underwent osteopathic manipulative treatment, including a new "opponens roll" maneuver, and self-stretching, or a similar treatment accomplished by use of a self-treatment accomplished by use of a

Spinal manipulative therapy and somatosensory activation.

Manually-applied movement and mobilization of body parts as a healing activity has been used for centuries. A relatively high velocity, low amplitude force applied to the vertebral column with therapeutic intent, referred to as spinal manipulative therapy (SMT), is one such activity. It is most commonly used by chiropractors, but other healthcare practitioners including osteopaths and physiotherapists also perform SMT. The mechanisms responsible for the therapeutic effects of SMT remain unclear. Early theories proposed that the nervous system mediates the effects of SMT. The goal of this artic

Assessment of the influence of osteopathic myofascial techniques on normalization of the vocal tract functions in patients with occupational dysphonia.

OBJECTIVES: Occupational voice disorders are accompanied by increased tension of the external laryngeal muscle which changes the position of the larynx and consequently disturbs the conditions of functioning of the vocal tract. The aim of the study is to assess the use of osteopathic procedures in the diagnosis and treatment of occupational dysphonia. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Study subjects included 40 teachers with chronic diseases of the voice organ (38 women and 2 men) aged from 39 to 59 (mean age: 48.25). Incidence Rate of Somatic Dysfunction in Previously Undiagnosed Spotted Fever Rickettsiosis: A Case Report.

Spotted Fever Rickettsiosis (SFR) is a systemic vasculopathy due to tick-borne rickettsial infection. Presenting symptoms and signs may be nonspecific or include the triad of fever, headache, and a rash. Established long-term complications of SFR include debilitating neuromusculoskeletal sequelae; however, no reports describe the incidence of somatic dysfunction (SD) in SFR. We present the first description of SD in previously undiagnosed SFR. Incidence of SD before diagnosis and after antibiotic therapy was assessed every seven weeks throughout 28 weeks of Osteopathic Neuromusculoskeletal Med

Autonomic rehabilitation: Vagal and sympathetic impacts of modified occipitomastoid suture V-spread.

BACKGROUND: Autonomic rehabilitation using osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) to stimulate the vagus nerve may be a good adjunct therapy by physiatrists who treat dysautonomia. Heart rate variability (HRV) may provide quantitative evidence for the benefits of OMT on autonomic nervous system function. Elevated HRV indicates optimal health and reduced mortality risk, whereas low HRV is associated with stress, pain, and chronic disease pathology. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the impact of modified occipitomastoid suture v-spread OMT technique on vagal tone by measuring HRV. DESIGN: Within-partic

[The use of the osteopathic correction for the combined treatment and rehabilitation of the patients presenting with the vertebral artery syndrome].

BACKGROUND: The pathological changes in the cervical spine frequently result in the disturbances of the blood supply in the vertebral-basiliar system. The degenerative-dystrophic processes in the cervical spine occupy the leading place in the pathogenesis of the vertebral artery syndrome (VAS) causing disorders of the microcirculation and innervation, as well as the restriction of mobility and the development of somatic dysfunctions. It can be assumed that the manual methods applied to manage this condition can be effective in the removal the functional abnormalities in the blood flow. AIMS:
