Fragmentation and flow of grazed coastal Bermudagrass through the digestive tract of cattle.

Samples of forage fragments were obtained from the upper (RUS) and lower (RLS) strata of the reticulorumen and feces (F) of four Brahman X Jersey steers grazing Coastal bermudagrass (CB) of two maturities with dry matter digestibilities (DMD) of 54.8 and 64.3%. Forage fragments were separated by particle size and evaluated histochemically for tissue type and fragmentation pattern. Fragmentation pattern was similar to that previously observed due to ingestive mastication. There was longitudinal separation of vascular bundles (VB) and severing at VB ends. Microscopically, similar size fragments

Analysis of the performance of different orthodontic devices for mandibular symphyseal distraction osteogenesis.

The aim of this study was to investigate the performance of different orthodontic devices for mandibular symphyseal distraction osteogenesis (MSDO). Two performance parameters were analysed, the first of which concerned the stability guaranteed by a distractor in the fracture gap under mastication loads and the second the level of reliability with which a distractor transfers a given expansion to the mandibular bone, inasmuch as the more reliable the device the smaller the difference between the degree of expansion provided to the device and the displacement achieved on the mandibular arch. [Ontogeny of the jaw].

Four pairs of branchial arch appear apparently in the neck region of human embryo about 32 days after fertilization. Maxillary prominence of the first branchial arch gives rise to the maxilla and zygomatic bone etc., and mandibular prominence forms the mandible and so on. Muscles for mastication are also derived from 1st branchial arch, into which fifth cranial nerves grow from the brain. Thus, human embryo improves the 1st branchial arches into the upper and lower jaws, and forms digestive organs needed for intake, mastication, and swallowing of foods. Finally they develop the brain for integ

Prosthesis loading after temporomandibular joint replacement surgery: a musculoskeletal modeling study.

One of the most widely reported complications associated with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) prosthetic total joint replacement (TJR) surgery is condylar component screw loosening and instability. The objective of this study was to develop a musculoskeletal model of the human jaw to assess the influence of prosthetic condylar component orientation and screw placement on condylar component loading during mastication. A three-dimensional model of the jaw comprising the maxilla, mandible, masticatory muscles, articular cartilage, and articular disks was developed. Simulations of mastication and a

Video tracking-based mandibular movement kinematic analysis in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with dysphagia due to nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) after radiotherapy often have chewing difficulty. Kinematic analysis of mandibular movements may provide clinically useful information for the chewing function. However, current kinematic device costs limited clinical application, and specialized software is required for control and data processing. This study aimed to mandibular kinematics parameter recognition using a self-developed Nswallow 2D motion capture software. To investigate whether differences in kinematic data of mandibular movements during mastication can be

United by chewing: Hunter-Schreger band-like pattern and wavy enamel in a fossil crocodile suggest functional convergence with mammals and dinosaurs.

Tooth enamel of most mammals shows alternating light and dark bands, called Hunter-Schreger bands (HSB), in longitudinal sections caused by decussating bundles of prisms, the unit building blocks of mammalian enamel. HSB are thought to increase resistance to abrasive food and mitigate crack propagation and hence are considered a mammalian adaptation to high-efficiency mastication. Using traditional microscopy techniques as well as X-ray diffraction computed tomography (XRD-CT), here we report for the first time the presence of HSB-like features in the tooth enamel of a non-mammalian amniote, I

Digital diagnostic occlusal equilibration combining an intraoral scanner, optical jaw tracking system, and dental design program: A dental technique.

Patients with aberrant occlusal patterns, including constricted mastication patterns or occlusal dysfunction, may require occlusal equilibration. Conventional diagnostic procedures involve diagnostic stone casts mounted in the articulator. During diagnostic procedures, occlusal equilibration methods are simulated on mounted stone casts to analyze the amount of dental structure that may need to be removed. A technique to virtually simulate an occlusal equilibration procedure is described. Digital data acquisition procedures include diagnostic casts acquired using an intraoral scanner and the re

Masticatory strains on osseous and ligamentous components of the temporomandibular joint in miniature pigs.

AIMS: An animal study of functional biomechanics was undertaken to understand normal loading of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and to provide insight into the pathogenesis of TMJ disorders. METHODS: Bone strain and ligamentous deformation were measured during mastication in 26 10-month-old minipigs. Half the subjects had undergone a surgical disruption of the left lateral capsular and disc attachments to the condyle 5 to 6 weeks previously. Rosette strain gauges were bonded to the left lateral surfaces of the squamosal bone near the TMJ, the condylar neck, and the mandibular corpus below t

Atypical Duane's retraction syndrome: congenital adduction palsy with synergistic divergence in association with aberrant trigeminal innervation and facial hypoplasia.

The authors describe the atypical and unique features of trigeminal-oculomotor synkinesis in a 6-year-old boy with left congenital adduction palsy and synergistic divergence with facial hypoplasia. Adducting movements of the left eye were also seen on mastication. To the best of the authors' knowledge, a case of this nature has not previously been reported. This case illustrates the absence of changes in palpebral aperture and globe retraction on attempted adduction and also the complete absence of any abduction deficit of the involved eye. Additionally, presence of adducting movements on mast

Chapter 14: Impact of Oral Health on Diet/Nutrition.

An individual's oral health status has a profound impact on his/her acquisition and utilization of nutrients and interchangeably the nutrients an individual consumes determine the state of oral health by preventing tooth loss and oral diseases. Oral diseases have a considerable impact on the masticatory function which is a critical first step in oral processing of food materials for nutrient procurement. Specifically, a section of this chapter is dedicated to the physiology of masticatory function and to the recent acknowledgement of its influence on memory and cognition, both during developme

Megaesophagus and possible mechanisms of sudden death.

Achalasia is a neurodegenerative condition characterized by esophageal dysmotility and megaesophagus. Two cases are reported that demonstrate unexpected deaths associated with previously unsuspected achalasia. Case 1: A 66-year-old woman was found dead at her home. At autopsy significant stenosing coronary artery atherosclerosis was found with cardiac failure. In addition, a striking finding was narrowing of the distal esophagus with marked proximal dilatation. The esophagus was completely filled with a large amount of soft masticated food and was bulging anteriorly, compressing the left atriu

Different corticostriatal projections from two parts of the cortical masticatory area in the rabbit.

The cortical masticatory area (CMA) elicits rhythmic jaw movements in response to repetitive stimulation and is involved in the control of mastication. Based on jaw movement patterns, the CMA is divided into two parts. One is the part of the CMA in which a T-pattern similar to jaw movements during food transport in natural mastication is evoked by electrical stimulation. The other is more dorsomedially located, and during chewing a C-pattern similar to jaw movements can be induced. However, it is still not known which region of the putamen receives projections from the CMA and whether projecti

Botulinum neurotoxin type A in the masseter muscle: effects on incisor eruption in rabbits.

INTRODUCTION: Botulinum neurotoxins are responsible for the paralytic food poisoning, botulism. Commercial formulations such as botulinum neurotoxin type A are increasingly used for various conditions, including cosmetic recontouring of the lower face by injection of the large masseter muscles. The paralysis of a major muscle of mastication lowers occlusal force and thus might affect tooth eruption. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of unilateral masseter muscle injection of botulinum neurotoxin type A on the rate of eruption of incisors in a rabbit model. We hypothesize

Effects of thirty-times chewing per bite on secretion of glucagon-like peptide-1 in healthy volunteers and type 2 diabetic patients.

Glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) is secreted from the small intestine to the blood in response to glucose intake during a meal; however, it is not known whether mastication affects GLP-1 secretion. Here, we examined the relationship between mastication and GLP-1 secretion, along with postprandial blood glucose and insulin concentrations. We compared the levels of blood glucose, serum insulin, and plasma active GLP-1 concentrations after young healthy volunteers ate a test meal either by usual eating (control) or in one of three specified ways: 1. unilateral chewing, 2. quick eating, 3. 30-times
