Fracture resistance of incisor teeth restored using fibre-reinforced posts and threaded metal posts: effect of post length, location, pretreatment and cementation of the final restoration.

OBJECTIVE: The hypothesis of this study was that the fracture load of incisor teeth restored using short, threaded, parallel-sided posts (TMP) is, under special conditions, not inferior to that of teeth restored using long TMPs or fibre-reinforced posts (FRP). METHODOLOGY: Seventy-two maxillary incisors and 72 mandibular incisors were collected. Sixty-four in each group were root filled; in half of these FRPs were cemented, and in the other half TMPs were used. Half of the FRPs were pretreated; the others were not pretreated. In the TMP-group, half of the teeth received a long post (10 mm), t

Functional outcomes following surgical treatment of bilateral mandibular condylar fractures.

Debate continues regarding unilateral or bilateral treatment for mandibular condylar fractures. This retrospective study evaluates the functional outcomes of bilateral condylar process fractures after surgical intervention. From May 1994 to December 2004, 51 adult patients with bilateral mandibular condylar process fractures were studied. There were 33 cases of bilateral condylar fractures (type I); 12 cases of condylar-subcondylar fractures (type II); and six cases of bilateral subcondylar fractures (type III). All patients underwent open reduction and internal fixation. Four patients had chi

Recovering the function and esthetics of fractured teeth using several restorative cosmetic approaches. Three clinical cases.

The teeth most commonly affected by trauma are the maxillary central incisors. The most frequent types of traumatic dental injuries to permanent teeth are enamel fractures, enamel and dentine fractures, and enamel and dentine fractures with pulp involvement. This article describes three clinical cases with different levels of traumatized maxillary incisors and several cosmetic approaches for recovery of the esthetics and the masticatory function, as well as the social/psychological aspects of treatment. All cases involved young adult men. The three clinical cases involve dentin and enamel frac

Refining Operative Indications for Zygomaticomaxillary Complex Fracture Repair.

STUDY DESIGN: Case-control. OBJECTIVE: Although zygomaticomaxillary complex (ZMC) fractures are among the most common facial injuries, the optimal approach to management remains controversial. This study analyzes the relationship between displacement measures derived from pre-operative CT imaging and clinical symptomatology to enhance surgeon understanding of the need for operative intervention. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 95 patients with ZMC fractures seen at a single institution between 2015 and 2020. Patient demographics, CT characteristics, and symptoms prompting

Medial fracturing of the inferior turbinate: effect on the ostiomeatal unit and the uncinate process.

It is apparently a common practice to fracture the inferior turbinate medially and superiorly to facilitate the fenestration of the inferior meatus, and to fracture medially and lateralize the inferior turbinate during turbinoplasty. However, it is also known that medial fracturing of the inferior turbinate may induce lateral displacement of the uncinate process. We investigated medial fracturing of the inferior turbinate to see whether it had any effect on changing the position of the uncinate process. A retrospective study was done on 23 patients who underwent medial fracturing of the inferi

Post-traumatic maxillary sinus mucocele.

Two cases of post-traumatic maxillary sinus mucoceles are described. In both scenarios, the patients had sustained severe facial injuries many years prior to presentation. Proptosis and globe displacement were identified clinically, and both patients had radiographic evidence of a maxillary sinus mucocele. Maxillary sinus mucoceles may occur as a late complication of facial fractures even if the draining ostium is normal.

Silent sinus syndrome: A traumatic case.

INTRODUCTION: Silent sinus syndrome is an unusual cause of progressive enophthalmos and hypoglobus due to atelectasia of the maxillary sinus associated with osteolysis of the orbital floor. This syndrome is classically idiopathic, but the term is also used to describe traumatic or iatrogenic (surgical orbital decompression) cases. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 33-year-old man who presented with a left orbital trauma without functional disorder. Computed tomography (CT) scan revealed a nondisplaced fracture of the left orbital floor. No surgical indication was made. Three months later,

Replantation of three avulsed permanent incisors with complicated crown fractures.

AIM: To report a rare case of multiple avulsions of permanent teeth associated with complicated crown fractures. SUMMARY: The case describes a 3-year follow-up of the treatment of three avulsed maxillary incisors with complicated crown fractures. The teeth were replanted after an extra-oral time of 90 min (extra-oral dry time 6 min). After root canal treatment, the fractured maxillary incisors were restored with a layered hybrid composite material to re-establish aesthetics and function. Follow-up visits showed signs of replacement resorption affecting the maxillary central incisors but only

Orthodontic Movement of Central Incisor with Previously-healed Root Fracture associated with Unerupted Canines.

Teeth with root fracture may need orthodontic treatment. This case report presents the management of unerupted canines in a patient with previously-healed/untreated horizontal root fracture in the maxillary left central incisor. The malocclusion was treated maintaining pulp vitality considering the principles to improve the eruption path of maxillary canines and move short-rooted teeth. The root-fractured tooth remained symptomless after orthodontic treatment without significant adverse effects, and stayed stable following 2-year follow-up.

Management of Crown-root Fracture with 180-degree Rotation Replantation: a Report of 2 Cases.

Intentional replantation involves a combination of periodontics, endodontics, prosthodontics and oral surgery. Crown-root fracture management is still complicated nowadays. A fracture line extending longitudinally to the subgingival area and intruding bioogical width could affect infection control, gingival health and crown restoration. In the present study, we present two cases. Case 1 involved a 23-year-old man who presented at our hospital with crown-root fracture of the maxillary left central incisor. A radiographic image of the tooth revealed a fracture line under the alveolar crest. The

A Case of Anterior Single Tooth Implant with Fractured Zirconia Abutment due to Trauma.

In recent years, a wide variety of materials have been used in dental implant treatment. In selecting the superstructures and abutments to be used it is important to consider their potential effect on the stability and durability of the planned implant. Excessive force applied to an implant during maintenance commonly results in complications, such as fracture of the superstructure or abutment, and loosening or fracture of the screws. This report describes a case of implant treatment for a 23-year-old man with esthetic disturbance due to trauma to the maxillary anterior teeth. The left maxilla

Severe open bite due to traumatic condylar fractures treated nonsurgically with implanted miniscrew anchorage.

This case report illustrates the use of miniscrews to treat a patient with an open bite caused by mandibular condylar fractures. The patient was 36 years old when she visited our hospital with a chief complaint of difficulty with chewing. She had suffered condylar and maxillary bone fractures in a traffic accident 6 months before her visit. She had an anterior open bite and Angle Class II molar relationships. Her mandibular midline was deviated to the right relative to the maxilla. The cephalometric analysis showed a skeletal Class II relationship. Titanium miniscrews were implanted in the bil

Simple Repair of a Blow-Out Fracture by the Modified Caldwell-Luc Approach.

Here we report a patient with a blow-out fracture of the orbital floor that was treated by an intraoral transmaxillary approach. This 38-year-old man suffered a sudden blow to the periorbital area, which caused prolapse of the orbital contents into the maxillary sinus. The modified Caldwell-Luc approach was used to repair the orbital blow-out fracture and the maxillary sinus during was packed with Frazin gauze for 7 days to prevent recurrence of the prolapse. This was an easy and minimally invasive technique for the management of a blow-out fracture of the orbital floor.
