[Odontogenic maxillary sinusitis based on overextension of root canal filling material].

In a 48-year-old woman and a 35-year-old man, a sinusitis maxillaris resulting from overextension of root canal filling material after an endodontic treatment ofa maxillary molar could be diagnosed through computed tomography. The woman complained of nasal congestion and in the man 2 radiopaque abnormalities in the maxillary sinus were discovered coincidentally. The corpora aliena were removed surgically. Root canal filling materials containing zinc oxide or hydrocortisone may cause aspergillosis of the maxillary sinus because they encountergrowth of Aspergillus species. In case ofmaxillary si

Late recovery from foreign body sinusitis after maxillary sinus floor augmentation.

A 55-year-old male patient was referred to our clinic with signs and symptoms of recurring sinusitis after a right maxillary sinus floor augmentation for implantological purposes. Investigations showed an antibiotic-resistant ethmoidomaxillary sinusitis resulting from bone graft infection and displacement of previously inserted xenograft material into the maxillary sinus. The patient thus underwent a surgical procedure combining nasal endoscopy and oral surgery in order to remove the infected graft and restore sinusal drainage. The procedure was apparently successful but sinusitis relapsed aft

Cefuroxime axetil versus clarithromycin in the treatment of acute maxillary sinusitis.

Acute maxillary sinusitis is a common condition requiring broad-spectrum therapy to prevent development of chronic disease. A randomised, double-blind, multicentre study was performed to compare the efficacy and safety of cefuroxime axetil 250 mg twice daily (n = 185) and clarithromycin 250 mg twice daily (n = 185), both administered for 10 days, in the treatment of patients with acute sinusitis. Efficacy was determined by assessment of clinical response at post-treatment and follow-up, and by radiological assessment at pre-treatment and follow-up. Assessment of days absent from work due to il

Bacteriology and beta-lactamase activity in acute and chronic maxillary sinusitis.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the bacteriology and beta-lactamase enzyme activity in aspirates of 10 acutely and 13 chronically inflamed maxillary sinuses. RESULTS: The predominant organisms isolated in acute sinusitis were Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, and Moraxella catarrhalis, and those found in chronic sinusitis were Prevotella species, Fusobacterium species, and Peptostreptococcus species. Four beta-lactamase-producing organisms (BLPOs) were isolated in four specimens (40%) obtained from acutely inflamed sinuses, and 14 BLPOs were recovered from 10 chronically inflamed sinuses

[Notes on decision making procedures in chronic maxillary sinusitis in soldiers].

The author has analysed documentation of certification of soldiers with chronic maxillary sinusitis, who were treated operatively (60) and conservatively (182). He has concluded: only 6.9% of soldiers who were treated conservatively and 10.2% who were treated operatively, had to be dismissed from army (temporary and durable). Certification about category "O" in conscripts and category "B" or "D" in soldiers with this disease gives a reason only exceptionally.

[Endonasal antrostomy with endoscopical control for chronic maxillary sinusitis (author's transl)].

A transnasal approach to the maxillary sinus as a standard operation in chronic maxillary sinusitis is described. A mucosal flap in the lower nasal meatus is electrically circumcised, and a window of appropriate size is formed by osteotomy. The removal of pedicled polyps and cysts from the cavity is controlled by endoscopy, while most parts of the thickened mucosa remain in place and may recover and also line the uncovered areas. If necessary, an opening in the facial wall of 5 mm diameter is established for endoscopical control or manipulations. The preliminary results of 56 endonasal sinutom

Odontogenic Sinusitis Presenting With Infraorbital Numbness and Progressive Maxillary Sinus Atelectasis.

Odontogenic sinusitis is the most common cause of isolated maxillary sinusitis. Accurate diagnosis is important to ensure optimal treatment. We discuss the unique presentation of a 55-year-old man with odontogenic sinusitis and associated infraorbital nerve neuropathy. We document his later development of chronic maxillary atelectasis and discuss the possible underlying pathophysiology linking this with his infraorbital neuropathy.

Is post orthognathic maxillary sinusitis related to sino-nasal anatomical alterations?

Le Fort I osteotomies have been used for more than five decades, but their impact on nasal and paranasal cavities physiology, has not been studied deeply. In this paper we want to analyse the possible correlation between post-orthognathic findings and prevalence of sinusitis which require surgical treatment. A retrospective cohort study was designed in 2017; the study was designed and carried out in the Verona University maxillo-facial department, a referral centre for orthognathic surgery. The study population is made of 64 patients that underwent orthognathic surgery (To treat class II or II
