Pulmonary function following completion of Minimally Invasive Repair for Pectus Excavatum (MIRPE).

UNLABELLED: Pulmonary function testing remains part of the routine preoperative investigations in patients with pectus excavatum, although there is evidence that reduced exercise capacity is predominantly due to impaired cardiovascular performance rather than ventilatory limitation. AIM OF THE STUDY: To evaluate the change of pulmonary function in patients after completion (metal bar removal) of minimally invasive repair for pectus excavatum compared to the preoperative functional results. PATIENTS AND METHODS: All patients who underwent minimally invasive repair for pectus excavatum (MIRPE)

Open-Source Hardware May Address the Shortage in Medical Devices for Patients with Low-Income and Chronic Respiratory Diseases in Low-Resource Countries.

Respiratory diseases pose an increasing socio-economic burden worldwide given their high prevalence and their elevated morbidity and mortality. Medical devices play an important role in managing acute and chronic respiratory failure, including diagnosis, monitoring, and providing artificial ventilation. Current commercially available respiratory devices are very effective but, given their cost, are unaffordable for most patients in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Herein, we focus on a relatively new design option-the open-source hardware approach-that, if implemented, will contribute

The differing patterns of interstitial lung involvement in connective tissue diseases.

Connective tissue disorders (CTD) have a relatively high incidence of pulmonary complications but their delineation has been hampered by difficulties inherent in the diagnostic techniques. One fresh approach to this problem is based on a clustering method that uses data from 8 separate investigations to cluster the patients into 4 distinctly separate categories representing normal nonsmoker, normal smokers, those with active interstitial lung disease and those with bronchiolitis. Using this method, a large group of patients with CTD have been examined to assess the nature and extent of their p

Neonatal bronchopulmonary dysplasia severity and respiratory outcomes at 3 years of age: a prospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) severity is associated with pulmonary function abnormalities and asthma diagnosis risk at 3 years of age, and to support risk-stratified respiratory follow-up in children with BPD. METHODS: This prospective cohort study included 68 preterm infants admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit of The First People's Hospital of Yongkang between January 2022 and December 2022. In the study protocol, BPD was operationally defined at 36 weeks' postmenstrual age as persistent supplemental oxygen requirement [fraction of inspired oxygen (

Assessment of low-flow sevoflurane and isoflurane effects on renal function using sensitive markers of tubular toxicity.

BACKGROUND: Carbon dioxide absorbents degrade sevoflurane, particularly at low gas flow rates, to fluoromethyl-2,2-difluoro-1-(trifluoromethyl)vinyl ether (compound A). Compound A causes renal proximal tubular injury in rats but has had no effect on blood urea nitrogen (BUN) or creatinine concentrations in patients. This investigation compared the effects of low-flow sevoflurane and isoflurane on renal tubular function in surgical patients using conventional (BUN and creatinine) and finer indices of renal injury, specifically those biomarkers sensitive for compound A toxicity in rats (glucosur

Comparison of Forced Oscillation Technique, Lung Volumes by Body Plethysmography, and Spirometry in Moderate Persistent Adult Asthma.

BACKGROUND: Spirometry is used extensively, but airway oscillometry is gaining acceptance for evaluating obstructive airway disorders. Moderate persistent asthma requires daily treatment with inhaled corticosteroids (ICS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We aimed to examine the relationship between airway oscillometry and lung volumes, which are the markers of lung physiology in obstructive airway disease and spirometry in the real-world clinical setting. A total of 72 adults with moderate persistent asthma followed up in our outpatient department from November 2021 to August 2022, and their clinical

Excessive bronchoconstriction induced by histamine and effects of volume history in patients with bronchial asthma.

The aim of this study was to examine the inter-relationships between the different effects of deep breaths and histamine provocation on airway function in patients with bronchial asthma. Group 1 consisted of 38 consecutive out-patients with newly diagnosed mild asthma, group 2 consisted of 20 patients with bronchial asthma of varying severity who were studied during clinical remission. We measured bronchial responsiveness (BR) to histamine inhalation as the dose of histamine which provoked a 20% fall in FEV1 (PD20). The fall in forced vital capacity (FVC) after inhaling the highest dose of his

Prevalence and factors associated with exercise-induced bronchospasm among rural school children in Ilesa, Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Exercise-induced bronchospasm (EIB) assessed using changes in peak expiratory flow rates (PEFRs) to free range exercise is a relatively cheap way of screening for asthma in resource-poor centres where children with asthma are often undiagnosed and poorly managed. This study sets out to determine the prevalence and factors associated with EIB among rural schoolchildren in Ilesa, Nigeria. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Children aged 8-16 years from two middle schools in rural Ilesa were selected by multistage sampling. Their sociodemographic characteristics and personal/family history of ast

Clinical characteristics, respiratory functional parameters, and outcome of a two-hour T-piece trial in patients weaning from mechanical ventilation.

The discrepancy in results from different studies regarding outcome of weaning from mechanical ventilation may be due to several factors such as the differences in patient populations and weaning indexes used. In order to analyze the clinical characteristics and weaning indexes in patients undergoing a 2-h T-piece weaning trial and the relationship between the etiology of acute respiratory failure (ARF) and the outcome of this weaning trial, we prospectively studied 217 patients receiving mechanical ventilation who met standard weaning criteria. Successful weaning occurred in 57.6% (125 of 217

Dupilumab Treatment is Associated with Improvement in Small Airway Dysfunction in Children with Moderate to Severe Asthma: A Retrospective Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Small airway dysfunction (SAD) is common in pediatric asthma and is associated with poor disease control and frequent exacerbations. Current therapies show limited efficacy in improving small airway function. Dupilumab suppresses type 2 inflammation and may provide benefit; however, real-world evidence in Chinese children is limited. This study evaluated the association between dupilumab and improvements in SAD in children with uncontrolled moderate-to-severe asthma. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study without a concurrent comparator group included 106 children (aged 6-14 yea

Smoking cessation and acute airway response to ozone.

Pulmonary function and symptom responses of asymptomatic smokers were measured during chamber exposures to ozone or filtered air. Subjects were evaluated while habituated to smoking and after 6 mo of smoking abstinence. At the onset of treatment, subjects (n = 18) who had a history of smoking 33.4 +/- 15.6 packs/y and who had almost normal pulmonary function (forced vital capacity [FVC], forced expiratory volume in 1 s [FEV1.0], and mid-maximal flow [MMF] were greater than 82% of predicted) were unresponsive to ozone exposure (0.4 ppm for 2 h). A matched group of control smokers (n = 16) did n

Effect of EMG-biofeedback robotic-assisted body weight supported treadmill training on walking ability and cardiopulmonary function on people with subacute spinal cord injuries - a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Body weight supported treadmill training (BWSTT) is a frequently used approach for restoring the ability to walk after spinal cord injury (SCI). However, the duration of BWSTT is usually limited by fatigue of the therapists and patients. Robotic-assisted body weight supported treadmill training (RABWSTT) was developed to tackle the aforesaid limitation. Currently, limited randomized controlled trials are available to investigate its effectiveness, especially on cardiopulmonary function. The aim of this two-arm, parallel-group randomized controlled trial is to examine the feasibilit
