Connectivity between default mode and frontoparietal networks mediates the association between global amyloid-β and episodic memory.

Βeta-amyloid (Aβ) is a neurotoxic protein that deposits early in the pathogenesis of preclinical Alzheimer's disease. We aimed to identify network connectivity that may alter the negative effect of Aβ on cognition. Following assessment of memory performance, resting-state fMRI, and mean cortical PET-Aβ, a total of 364 older adults (286 with clinical dementia rating [CDR-0], 59 with CDR-0.5 and 19 with CDR-1, mean age: 74.0 ± 6.4 years) from the OASIS-3 sample were included in the analysis. Across all participants, a partial least squares regression showed that lower connectivity between poster

Different patterns of gray matter atrophy in behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia with and without episodic memory impairment.

BACKGROUND: Differentiating patients with behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) from Alzheimer's disease (AD) is important as these two conditions have distinct treatment and prognosis. Using episodic impairment and medial temporal lobe atrophy as a tool to make this distinction has been debatable in the recent literature, as some patients with bvFTD can also have episodic memory impairment and medial temporal lobe atrophy early in the disease. OBJECTIVES: To compare brain atrophy patterns of patients with bvFTD with and without episodic memory impairment to that of patients with

Episodic Memory and Hippocampal Volume Predict 5-Year Mild Cognitive Impairment Conversion in Healthy Apolipoprotein ε4 Carriers.

OBJECTIVE: The Apolipoprotein (APOE) ε4 allele increases the risk for mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia, but not all carriers develop MCI/dementia. The purpose of this exploratory study was to determine if early and subtle preclinical signs of cognitive dysfunction and medial temporal lobe atrophy are observed in cognitively intact ε4 carriers who subsequently develop MCI. METHODS: Twenty-nine healthy, cognitively intact ε4 carriers (ε3/ε4 heterozygotes; ages 65-85) underwent neuropsychological testing and MRI-based measurements of medial temporal volumes over a 5-year follow-up in

Latent Profiles of Cognitive Control, Episodic Memory, and Visual Perception Across Psychiatric Disorders Reveal a Dimensional Structure.

Although meta-analyses suggest that schizophrenia (SZ) is associated with a more severe neurocognitive phenotype than mood disorders such as bipolar disorder, considerable between-subject heterogeneity exists in the phenotypic presentation of these deficits across mental illnesses. Indeed, it is unclear whether the processes that underlie cognitive dysfunction in these disorders are unique to each disease or represent a common neurobiological process that varies in severity. Here we used latent profile analysis (LPA) across 3 distinct cognitive domains (cognitive control, episodic memory, and

Is Long-term Exposure to Air Pollution Associated with Episodic Memory? A Longitudinal Study from Northern Sweden.

Associations between long-term exposure to ambient air pollution and cognitive function have been observed in a few longitudinal studies. Our aim was to investigate the association between long-term exposure to air pollution and episodic memory, a marker of early cognitive decline. We used data from the Betula study in Northern Sweden, and included participants 60 to 85 of age at inclusion, 1,469 persons in total. The participants were followed for up to 22 years, five years apart between 1988 and 2010. A composite of five tasks was used as a measure of episodic memory measure (EMM), and the f

Interference with episodic memory retrieval following transcranial stimulation of the inferior but not the superior parietal lobule.

Although posterior parietal cortex (PPC) has been traditionally associated with spatial attention and sensorimotor functions, recent neuroimaging evidence has suggested the involvement of regions of left PCC (LPPC) in memory retrieval. Yet, the role of the parietal lobe in memory-related functions is still controversial. Here we investigated the causal involvement of different LPPC regions in episodic memory retrieval using repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) during a task that provided both objective and subjective measures of item recognition and source memory. Stimulation si

The role of medial temporal lobe in retrieving spatial and nonspatial relations from episodic and semantic memory.

This study examined the involvement of medial temporal lobe, especially the hippocampus, in processing spatial and nonspatial relations using episodic and semantic versions of a relational judgment task. Participants studied object arrays and were tested on different types of relations between pairs of objects. Three prevalent views of hippocampal function were considered. Cognitive map theory (O'Keefe and Nadel (1978) The Hippocampus as a Cognitive Map. USA: Oxford University Press) emphasizes hippocampal involvement in spatial relational tasks. Multiple trace theory (Nadel and Moscovitch (19

Age of Onset, Brain Controllability, and Working Memory Performance in First-Episode Schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: The onset-age of schizophrenia introduces considerable heterogeneity in cognitive functions such as working memory (WM) among patients. One of the key properties of the brain that varies with age-related development is the network-level controllability of brain state transitions. We tested the effect of onset-age on brain controllability to evaluate its impact on WM deficits in schizophrenia. STUDY DESIGN: We examined the average and modal controllability of the brain connectome in 85 first-episode early-onset schizophrenia (EOS), 62 younger healthy controls (yHC),

Human hippocampal CA3 damage disrupts both recent and remote episodic memories.

Neocortical-hippocampal interactions support new episodic (event) memories, but there is conflicting evidence about the dependence of remote episodic memories on the hippocampus. In line with systems consolidation and computational theories of episodic memory, evidence from model organisms suggests that the cornu ammonis 3 (CA3) hippocampal subfield supports recent, but not remote, episodic retrieval. In this study, we demonstrated that recent and remote memories were susceptible to a loss of episodic detail in human participants with focal bilateral damage to CA3. Graph theoretic analyses of

Streptococcal Immunity Is Constrained by Lack of Immunological Memory following a Single Episode of Pyoderma.

The immunobiology underlying the slow acquisition of skin immunity to group A streptococci (GAS), is not understood, but attributed to specific virulence factors impeding innate immunity and significant antigenic diversity of the type-specific M-protein, hindering acquired immunity. We used a number of epidemiologically distinct GAS strains to model the development of acquired immunity. We show that infection leads to antibody responses to the serotype-specific determinants on the M-protein and profound protective immunity; however, memory B cells do not develop and immunity is rapidly lost. Personal semantic and episodic autobiographical memories in Korsakoff syndrome: A comparison of interview methods.

OBJECTIVE: The temporal gradient in patients with Korsakoff's syndrome has been of particular interest in the literature, as many studies have found evidence for a steep temporal gradient, but others have observed more uniform remote memory impairment across all past time periods. Inconsistencies might be the result of the nature of remote memory impairment under study (i.e., nonpersonal or autobiographical memory) and of methodological differences in the examination of remote memory loss. The aim of this study was to examine whether differences between autobiographical memory interview (AMI)

Working memory as a predictor of negative symptoms and functional outcome in first episode psychosis.

The relationship of neurocognitive course with clinical and functional outcomes in psychosis is not well known, especially in the long term. The aim of the study was to examine the clinical and neuropsychological course of first-episode psychosis patients at 5-year follow-up and analyze the relationship of cognitive performance with clinical and functional outcome. The 5-year follow-up was conducted with 26 first-episode psychosis patients. Psychotic symptoms were measured by the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale, manic and depressive symptoms by the Young Mania Rating Scale and Hamilton De

[The neurophysiology of the interaction between attention and episodic memory: a review of studies into the visual mode].

INTRODUCTION: Attention is the process that provides us with the capacity to select perceptions or internal representations for conscious processing and action. Given that episodic memory is where our personal experiences are stored together with the context they take place in, it has been observed that disturbances affecting attention, whether they are due to neurological disorders or experimental manipulation, deteriorate the storage of episodic information. AIMS: The aim of this study is to explain, from a neurophysiological perspective, how the processes of attention and memory interact w

The effects of single and repeated episodes of thiamin deficiency on memory in alcohol-consuming rats.

The underlying pathogenesis of Korsakoff's syndrome, an amnesic disorder most commonly found in alcoholics, is not well understood. Chronic alcoholism is associated with thiamin deficiency and current thinking is that this may be the causal factor. In Experiment 1, rats were given a 20% (v/v) ethanol/water mix as their only source of fluid for 156 days. Three groups were made thiamin deficient through the combination of a thiamin-deficient diet and the centrally acting thiamin antagonist pyrithiamin hydrobromide, after 4, 15, and 26 weeks exposure to ethanol, respectively. The control group wa

Where was it? The impact of object nameability, surrounding context, and object placement on episodic object-location memory.

Remembering where an object is requires binding its identity and location into a coherent memory. Object-related and spatial factors have been studied separately, but how they interact in shaping object-location memory remains unclear. We investigated how object nameability, the presence of surrounding context, and the nature of object placements affect episodic memory for object locations. In Experiment 1, participants memorized easy-to-name and difficult-to-name objects presented at the top, bottom, left, or right of the screen. Surrounding context was varied by presenting the objects either

Spatial ability, episodic memory, and emotion recognition in women with congenital adrenal hyperplasia or complete androgen insensitivity syndrome.

Conditions like congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) and complete androgen insensitivity syndrome (CAIS) may provide information contributing to the explanation of sex differences in cognition. Using online tests and questionnaires, we examined how prenatal androgen exposure and/or sex chromosomes influence spatial ability, episodic memory, and emotion recognition in women with classic CAH (C-CAH; n = 29), non-classic CAH (NC-CAH; n = 13), CAIS (n = 11), and female (n = 147) and male (n = 142) controls. Results showed that (1) female and male controls differed on most cognitive tasks, whereas

Visual associative learning to detect early episodic memory deficits and distinguish Alzheimer's disease from other types of dementia.

OBJECTIVE: We investigated how well a visual associative learning task discriminates Alzheimer's disease (AD) dementia from other types of dementia and how it relates to AD pathology. METHODS: 3,599 patients (63.9 ± 8.9 years old, 41% female) from the Amsterdam Dementia Cohort completed two sets of the Visual Association Test (VAT) in a single test session and underwent magnetic resonance imaging. We performed receiver operating curve analysis to investigate the VAT's discriminatory ability between AD dementia and other diagnoses and compared it to that of other episodic memory tests. We test

Attachment patterns and autobiographical episodic memory functioning: A systemic review of adult studies to advance clinical psychological science.

Patterns of insecure attachment are associated with psychopathology but the mechanisms involved remain poorly understood. Cognitive science proposes that attachment patterns are influenced by the autobiographical memory system and in turn influence its ongoing functioning. Disturbances in autobiographical memory represent cognitive risks for later emotional difficulties. We systemically reviewed 33 studies (in 28 articles) examining the association between attachment patterns and autobiographical episodic memory (AEM) in individuals from the age of 16 (i.e., from young to older adulthood). Episodic memory and recognition are influenced by cues' sensory modality: comparing odours, music and faces using virtual reality.

Most everyday experiences are multisensory, and all senses can trigger the conscious re-experience of unique personal events embedded in their specific spatio-temporal context. Yet, little is known about how a cue's sensory modality influences episodic memory, and which step of this process is impacted. This study investigated recognition and episodic memory across olfactory, auditory and visual sensory modalities in a laboratory-ecological task using a non-immersive virtual reality device. At encoding, participants freely and actively explored unique and rich episodes in a three-room house wh

Episodic memory effects of gamma frequency precuneus transcranial magnetic stimulation in Alzheimer's disease: A randomized multiple baseline study.

Episodic memory decline is the prominent neuropsychological feature of typical Alzheimer's Disease (AD), for which current treatments have a limited clinical response. Recently, gamma entrainment therapy has been used as a non-invasive treatment in AD, providing evidence that it may have the potential to alleviate brain pathology and improve cognitive function in AD patients. At the same time, the precuneus (PC) has been recognized as a key area involved in AD related memory deficits and as a key node of the Default Mode Network. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of a 40 Hz Tra
