Sex-role stereotyping in assessments of mental health made by psychiatric-mental health nurses.

To determine the amount of sex-role stereotyping in judgments of mental health made by psychiatric-mental health nurses, 150 of these nurses, divided into three equal groups, were asked to rate ideal states of mental health in males, females, and adults, respectively. An 83 percent return rate was obtained. Results showed: 1) there was less sex-role stereotyping than in a similar study reported in 1970 with other mental health professionals; 2) judgments of mental health closely resembled assessments of social desirability; 3) healthy females were rated closer to that which was considered desi

Mental health training programmes for non-mental health trained professionals coming into contact with people with mental ill health: a systematic review of effectiveness.

BACKGROUND: The police and others in occupations where they come into close contact with people experiencing/with mental ill health, often have to manage difficult and complex situations. Training is needed to equip them to recognise and assist when someone has a mental health issue or learning/intellectual disability. We undertook a systematic review of the effectiveness of training programmes aimed at increasing knowledge, changing behaviour and/or attitudes of the trainees with regard to mental ill health, mental vulnerability, and learning disabilities. METHODS: Databases searched from 19

Innovation in Acute Adolescent Mental Healthcare: Evaluating a Responsive and Sustainable Mental Healthcare Model.

Background and objectives: Despite the substantial global burden of mental illnesses, there remains limited evidence evaluating the effectiveness of inpatient Models of Care (MOCs) for adolescents. This paper compares the effectiveness of an innovative MOC, the Brief Intervention MOC (BIMOC), with the Traditional MOC in an acute adolescent inpatient unit. Comparisons were based on clinical outcome measures and several Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) (length of stay, 28-day readmission rate, 7-day follow-up rate, seclusion rate, and self-harm incidents), which were tracked over the subsequent

Headaches, mental health disorders, and religiosity: analysis of the Saudi National Mental Health Survey.

BACKGROUND: Headaches have been consistently associated with mental health disorders. However, current prevalence of headaches in Arab populations is highly varied. Additionally, the potential role of religiosity in this relationship has not been studied. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of headaches in Saudi Arabia, a highly religious Arab society, to examine their association with mental health disorders, and to explore whether religiosity modifies this relationship. METHODS: This study used the Saudi National Mental Health Survey (SNMHS), a nationally representative, cross-secti

Mental Illness, Probation, and Recidivism: Standardizing Uniform Mental Health Docket Legislation in Ohio.

The rise of Mental Illness diagnoses in the United States unique to the criminal justice system. Specifically in Ohio, individuals with mental illness diagnoses have increased within the criminal justice system leading to the implementation of the Mental Health Court Docket. The Mental Health Docket has led to a decrease in recidivism by providing Defendants with appropriate mental health treatment. Within Ohio there is no universal standard for individuals being admitted into the Docket which has led to inconsistencies throughout the State and restrictive clinical requirements like requiring

How Mental Concepts Shape Sleep: Introducing the Mental Concept Reactivation Hypothesis of Sleep.

Sleep problems affect a substantial proportion of individuals, and negative thoughts, rumination, and worry are considered key factors underlying persistence and severity. While extensive research has examined how these states disrupt sleep before falling asleep, much less is known about how mental concepts, including thoughts, expectations, intentions, and emotions, continue to influence sleep during sleep itself. Likewise, the potential benefits of sleep-promoting mental concepts during sleep remain underexplored. Here, we propose the Mental Concept Reactivation (MCR)-Hypothesis of Sleep, su

Mental Health Stigma in Active Duty Service Members Receiving Mental Health Services.

INTRODUCTION: Mental health treatment is a service for military service members who have experienced psychological injury or trauma. Unfortunately, the stigma associated with treatment can prevent many service members from seeking and receiving treatment designed to help them recover. Previous studies have examined the impacts of stigma among military personnel as well as civilians; however, stigma among service members currently receiving mental health treatment is unknown. The purpose of this study is to understand the relationships between stigma, demographic variables, and mental health sy

The effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health in individuals with pre-existing mental illness.

BACKGROUND: There is evidence that the COVID-19 pandemic has negatively affected mental health, but most studies have been conducted in the general population. AIMS: To identify factors associated with mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic in individuals with pre-existing mental illness. METHOD: Participants (N = 2869, 78% women, ages 18-94 years) from a UK cohort (the National Centre for Mental Health) with a history of mental illness completed a cross-sectional online survey in June to August 2020. Mental health assessments were the GAD-7 (anxiety), PHQ-9 (depression) and WHO-5 (well-

Military veterans and civilians' mental health diagnoses: an analysis of secondary mental health services.

PURPOSE: Healthcare provision in the United Kingdom (UK) falls primarily to the National Health Service (NHS) which is free at the point of access. In the UK, there is currently no national marker to identify military veterans in electronic health records, nor a requirement to record it. This study aimed to compare the sociodemographic characteristics and recorded mental health diagnoses of a sample of veterans and civilians accessing secondary mental health services. METHODS: The Military Service Identification Tool, a machine learning computer tool, was employed to identify veterans and civ

Impact of Mental Health Insurance Legislation on Mental Health Treatment in a Longitudinal Sample of Adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Mental health insurance laws are intended to improve access to needed treatments and prevent discrimination in coverage for mental health conditions and other medical conditions. OBJECTIVES: The aim was to estimate the impact of these policies on mental health treatment utilization in a nationally representative longitudinal sample of youth followed through adulthood. METHODS: We used data from the 1997 National Longitudinal Survey of Youth and the Mental Health Insurance Laws data set. We specified a zero-inflated negative binomial regression model to estimate the relationship b

Measuring Trivialization of Mental Illness: Developing a Scale of Perceptions that Mental Illness Symptoms are Beneficial.

Much of the extant research on representations of mental illness in the media have focused on stigmatization. The negative effects of these stigmatizing portrayals on individuals with mental illness are serious. However, recent scholarship has identified another phenomenon in the mediated portrayal of mental illness whereby these conditions are trivialized. As opposed to stigmatizing portrayals that make people with mental illness seem violent and incompetent, media portrayals that trivialize mental illnesses often treat the symptoms of these conditions (e.g., organizational ability for people

The Mentally Ill in Jail: Contemporary Clinical and Practice Perspectives for Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing.

Individuals with serious mental illnesses (SMI) who are incarcerated pose major treatment challenges for both correctional personnel and healthcare providers, yet deserve the same high standards of care as those in traditional mental health facilities. The literature references these challenges as types of mental health treatment disparities, and calls for improvement measures from clinicians, researchers, policy-makers, and advocates. From the standpoint of psychiatric-mental health (PMH) nursing, this paper explores, examines, and offers some contemporary clinical and practice perspectives f

Violence and mental disorders. A retrospective study of people in charge of a community mental health center.

BACKGROUND: Numerous studies conducted in inpatient settings have highlighted how mental disorders are associated with an increased risk of violence, particularly during acute phases. However, to date a more limited number of studies have been performed to assess the risk of violence in outpatients, particularly in Italy. The present study aims to evaluate the prevalence of violent events in a sample of patients in charge of a community mental health center in Italy. METHODS: Based on data obtained from standardized clinical records, a retrospective study was undertaken to investigate acts of
