Utilization of a thorax anthropomorphic phantom for dose assessment and scanning protocol synchronization in computed tomography.

Optimizing radiation dose while maintaining image quality remains a key challenge in computed tomography (CT). This study used a thorax-specific anthropomorphic phantom to assess patient dose, image quality, and artefact presence under automated tube current modulation settings and to evaluate the effect of tube voltage on Hounsfield Unit (HU) response for different iodine concentrations. Dose metrics, noise levels, and image quality indicators were extracted from Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) metadata and image analysis. The study examined how patient positioning affe

Antigenic remodeling of the SARS-CoV-2 Spike N-terminal domain links sequence variability to structural reorganization of a neutralizing antibody supersite.

INTRODUCTION: The N-terminal domain (NTD) of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) Spike harbors a neutralizing antibody supersite and is a recurrent site of antigenic change. However, how sequence variability across pre- and post-vaccination immune landscapes reshapes antibody recognition remains incompletely characterized. METHODS: Clinical-genomic surveillance was combined with structural modeling and molecular dynamics to identify antigenically relevant NTD changes and probe their structural impact on the neutralizing antibody interface. SARS-CoV-2 profiles were

ESIC Series: Paper 4 Data sharing and reuse in evidence synthesis: Recommendations from the Evidence Synthesis Infrastructure Collaborative (ESIC) Working Group 2.

OBJECTIVE: Evidence synthesis data processes remain fragmented, with frequent duplication of data extraction, study-quality assessment, and certainty appraisal. These inefficiencies occur within a broader evidence ecosystem shaped by inequities in access, publication practices, language, infrastructure, technology, and representation, which can affect the visibility and reuse of evidence from non-English and low- and middle-income country contexts. The objective of this commentary was to identify practical solutions for strengthening data sharing and reuse so that evidence produced for one syn

Multimodal neural operators for real-time biomechanical modelling of traumatic brain injury.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) remains a major public health concern, with over 69 million cases annually worldwide. Accurate patient-specific biomechanical modeling is critical for injury risk assessment, but it requires integrating heterogeneous data sources such as volumetric neuroimaging, scalar demographic parameters, and acquisition metadata. Conventional finite element solvers can perform this modeling, yet they remain too computationally expensive for time-sensitive clinical settings. Neural operators have emerged as a promising alternative by learning resolution-invariant ma

The Evolution of Radiation Therapy in Children's Oncology Group Trials, From 1998 to 2025.

PURPOSE: Significant advancements in external beam radiation therapy (RT) over the past 20+ years have occurred with evolution from 2-dimensional techniques based on plain film x rays to 3-dimensional conformal and intensity modulated photon techniques. Likewise, proton radiation therapy (PRT) was also introduced and has become more widely available. Each advance in radiation technique improves targeting and has the potential to mitigate late effects associated with RT. In this study, we use metadata from past and present Children's Oncology Group trials that included RT to describe the evolut

When Form Intersects with Automation: Ethics, Authorship, and the Future of IMRAD.

Academic dishonesty predates artificial intelligence; fabrication, plagiarism, and ghost authorship largely reflect distorted "publish or perish" incentives rather than technological novelty. We argue that using AI to assist with drafting, linguistic editing, and organizing text, tables, and figures in biology is ethically comparable to established editorial support services, provided its use is transparently disclosed and full accountability remains with human authors. At the same time, exponential growth in publication output is intensifying the peer-review bottleneck and challenging the sus

Assessing the FAIRness of survey data collected during the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany.

This study investigates the FAIRness (Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, and Reusability) of survey data collected during the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany. During the pandemic, surveys played a crucial role in capturing public attitudes and health-related behaviors, but researchers often faced a trade-off between rapid data collection and implementing high-quality survey designs. Using metadata from the "Survey Data Collection during the COVID-19 Pandemic" (SDCCP) project, which documents 717 surveys conducted in Germany, we assessed the FAIRness of surveys published with a persiste

Exploring per-base quality scores as a surrogate marker of cell-free DNA fragmentome.

Per-base quality scores are widely treated as technical metadata in next-generation sequencing. Here, we show that in rigorously controlled whole-genome sequencing of cell-free DNA, quality profiles may carry fragmentomic-associated signal that enables classification of cancer samples against matched controls. Analyzing four independent batches (23 cancer samples: pancreatic and breast; 22 matched controls) sequenced in a within-lane regime and further normalized per flow-cell tile to reduce technical confounders, we demonstrate through unsupervised analysis that boundary-enriched dynamics cap

Building an Ontology-Based Cohort of Liver Cancer Imaging Data for AI Development on the European Federated Platform EUCAIM.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is steadily increasing in incidence worldwide and requires data-driven approaches to improve diagnosis, prognosis, and therapeutic decisions. We describe the harmonization of IMALIVE -a real-world HCC cohort- with the common data model of the European Cancer Imaging Initiative (EUCAIM). IMALIVE integrates demographic, clinical, and imaging-related variables, which were aligned with core variables of the EUCAIM common data model through a robust mapping process and expert validation. The process achieved full coverage of the core dataset and added HCC-specific var

SRGT: Spatial-Resolution-Guided Teacher for Robust Semi-Supervised Aerial Object Detection.

Semi-supervised object detection (SSOD) in aerial imagery is significantly hampered by extreme object scale variations, primarily due to diverse spatial resolutions inherent in aerial data, measurable through Ground Sample Distance (GSD). Existing SSOD methods often overlook this crucial GSD information, leading to unreliable pseudo-labels when GSD distributions mismatch between labeled and unlabeled data. To address this issue, we propose the Spatial-Resolution-Guided Teacher (SRGT), a novel framework that explicitly leverages GSD metadata. SRGT incorporates a temporal incremental weighted up

Manage your image database with computer vision-Lessons learned at Encyclopedia of Life.

Natural history museums house invaluable biodiversity archives, but discoveries are often limited by the accessibility of collections data. As digitization of specimens and metadata accelerates, automated methods are needed to organize image databases and enable large-scale analyses. Beyond species identification, computer vision (CV) can automate image database management by standardizing gallery displays through intelligent cropping and extracting tags to improve search functionality. Encyclopedia of Life is a biodiversity database that aims to document all ∼2.2 million known species. Using

Drug Discovery's Blind Spot: Why Organoid-Artificial Intelligence Convergence Demands Integrated Governance.

Organoid-artificial intelligence (AI) platforms are increasingly central to drug discovery, yet they sit between two governance regimes. AI frameworks presume stable, well-characterized inputs, while organoid ethics focuses on donor consent, moral status, and tissue use, leaving downstream computational uses of organoid-derived data underregulated. This article argues that the convergence of living biological variability with algorithmic decision-making creates a governance vacuum in high-stakes preclinical contexts. The organoid-AI case is distinctive because two mature governance traditions,

Single-cell and spatial transcriptomic profiling of cardiac fibroblasts following myocardial infarction.

Cardiac fibroblasts (CFs) are key mediators of heart repair following myocardial infarction (MI). A specific CF subpopulation, termed Reparative Cardiac Fibroblasts (RCFs), has been shown to orchestrate scar formation and prevent ventricular rupture after MI. However, the timing of RCF appearance and the molecular events underlying this transition remain largely undefined. Here, we present a multi-modal dataset capturing the transcriptional dynamics of CFs during the early phase post-MI. Our integrative dataset combines bulk RNA sequencing, RNAscope in situ hybridization, and spatial transcrip
