This study investigated the variation in microbially induced concrete corrosion communities at different circumferential locations of a real sewer pipe and the effects of a wastewater flooding event on the community. Three distinct microbial community groups were found in different corrosion samples. The physico-chemical properties of the corrosion layers and the microbial communities were distinct for the cross-sectional positions within the pipe, ie ceiling, wall and tidal zones. The microbial communities detected from the same positions in the pipe were consistent over the length of the pip

In order to elucidate interactions between sulfate reduction and dechlorination, we systematically evaluated the effects of different concentrations of sulfate and sulfide on reductive dechlorination by isolates, constructed consortia, and enrichments containing Dehalococcoides sp. Sulfate (up to 5 mM) did not inhibit the growth or metabolism of pure cultures of the dechlorinator Dehalococcoides mccartyi 195, the sulfate reducer Desulfovibrio vulgaris Hildenborough, or the syntroph Syntrophomonas wolfei In contrast, sulfide at 5 mM exhibited inhibitory effects on growth of the sulfate reducer

Mixed-culture fermentation that does not require an energy-intensive sterilization process is a viable approach for the economically feasible production of lactic acid (LA) due to the potential use of organic waste as feedstock. This study investigated mixed-culture LA fermentation of whey, a high-strength organic wastewater, in continuous mode. Variations in the hydraulic retention time (HRT) from 120 to 8 h under different pH regimes in two thermophilic reactors (55 °C) were compared for their fermentation performance. One reactor was maintained at a low pH (pH 3.0) during operation at HRTs

Porphyromonas gingivalis is one of the keystone pathogens associated with chronic periodontitis. All P. gingivalis strains examined thus far produce outer membrane vesicles. Recent studies have found that vesicles possess some well-known virulence factors of P. gingivalis such as adhesins, toxins and proteolytic enzymes. Carrying most of the characteristic features of their parent P. gingivalis cells, vesicles communicate with host cells and other members of microbial biofilms, resulting in the transmission of virulence factors into these host cells and the formation of pathogenic bacteria-dom

Incidents of coral disease are on the rise. However, in the absence of a surrogate animal host, understanding of the interactions between coral pathogens and their hosts remains relatively limited, compared to other pathosystems of similar global importance. A tropical sea anemone, Aiptasia pallida, has been investigated as a surrogate model to study certain aspects of coral biology. Therefore, to test whether the utility of this surrogate model can be extended to study coral diseases, in the present study, we tested its susceptibility to common coral pathogens (Vibrio coralliilyticus and Vibr

Two enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) reactors were started up at low temperatures to obtain microorganisms responsible for aerobic and anoxic phosphorus removal, namely polyphosphate-accumulating organisms (PAO) and denitrifying PAO (DPAO), and their operational performance and microbial community were together investigated in the hope of assessment of the effectiveness of the EBPR process at low temperature by combining chemical analysis and microbial community structure evolution based on polymerase chain reaction-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis. When two reactors reache

Temperature has strong effects on metabolic processes of individuals and demographics of populations, but effects on ecological communities are not well known. Many economically and ecologically important pest species have obligate associations with other organisms; therefore, effects of temperature on these species might be mediated by strong interactions. The southern pine beetle (Dendroctonus frontalis Zimmermann) harbors a rich community of phoretic mites and fungi that are linked by many strong direct and indirect interactions, providing multiple pathways for temperature to affect the sys

Consolidated bioprocessing (CBP) of lignocellulosic biomass (LCB) using microbes simplifies the process, eliminates enzyme cost and reduces the overall processing expenses. In this regard, termite gut, a potent reservoir of microbial symbionts produces various lignocellulolytic enzymes which acts synergistically to degrade LCB. However, the effectiveness of adapting the microbes with LCB for improved lignocellulolytic enzyme secretion and substrate degradation in a biorefinery framework has been overlooked. Hence, in this study adaptive laboratory evolution (ALE) of termite gut isolates was pe

The excessive use of herbicide acetochlor (ACT) threatens crop health and the environment, necessitating effective remediation strategies. This study focused on a consortium named AT1, enriched from ACT-contaminated soil. Under optimized conditions (25 °C, pH 7, 1 % inoculum), AT1 almost completely degraded ACT (50-1000 mg/L) within 6-12 days. High-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA gene revealed a reduction in community diversity over time, with Sphingomonas (58.6 %) and Diaphorobacter (26.43 %) as dominant taxa. A structure model and network analysis indicated strong microbial competition dur

In this study we evaluated plant growth promotion (PGP) traits of bacteria associated with maize (Zea mays L.) including Pseudomonas sp. (TL36), Staphylococcus sp. (TL49), Gottfriedia sp. (TL52), and Bacillus sp. (TL80), isolated from mining tailings, when exposed to mercury and arsenic. Initially, the response of the bacteria to the heavy metals studied were evaluated in in vitro assays, showing regular-moderate tolerance to arsenic and low tolerance to mercury. Also plant growth promotion traits of the bacteria were studied in in vitro assays in terms of production of indole-3-acetic acid (I

Sulfide-carbonate-mineralized functional bacterial consortium was constructed for flue gas cadmium biomineralization. A membrane biofilm reactor (MBfR) using the bacterial consortium containing sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) and denitrifying bacteria (DNB) was investigated for flue gas cadmium (Cd) removal. Cadmium removal efficiency achieved 90%. The bacterial consortium containing Citrobacter, Desulfocurvus and Stappia were dominated for cadmium resistance-nitrate-sulfate reduction. Under flue gas cadmium stress, ten cadmium resistance genes (czcA, czcB, czcC, czcD, cadA, cadB, cadC, cueR,

Butenolide is an environmentally friendly antifouling natural product, but its efficiency and mechanism in preventing biofilm formation have not been examined. Furthermore, controlling the release of butenolide from paints into seawater is technically challenging. A coating was developed by mixing butenolide with a biodegradable polymer, poly (ε-caprolactone)-based polyurethane, and a one-month in situ anti-biofilm test was conducted in a subtidal area. The constant release of butenolide from the surface suggested that its release was well controlled. Direct observation and confocal microscope

Manure application contributes to the increased environmental burden of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). We investigated the response of tetracycline (tet) resistance genes and bacterial taxa to manure application amended with tetracyclines over two months. Representative tetracyclines (oxytetracycline, chlorotetracycline and doxycycline), tet resistance genes (tet(M), tet(O), tet(W), tet(S), tet(Q) and tet(X)) and bacterial taxa in the untreated soil, +manure, and +manure+tetracyclines groups were analyzed. The abundances of all tet resistance genes in the +manure group were significantly

This study systematically evaluated the effect of ferric iron on sulfate reduction to sulfide, feed digestion and fermentation, methane production, and populations of select ruminal microbes using in vitro rumen cultures. Ferric oxide (Fe2O3) and ferric citrate (C6H5FeO7) at six concentrations (0, 25, 50, 100, 150, and 200mg/L as Fe(3+)) were tested. Ferric iron decreased production of both H2S gas in culture headspace (up to 71.9%) and aqueous sulfide (up to 80.8%), without adversely affecting other fermentation parameters, with ferric citrate being more effective than ferric oxide. Our understanding of the microbiome and its implications for human health and disease continues to develop. Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is now an established treatment for recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection. There is also increasing evidence for the efficacy of FMT in inducing remission for mild-moderate ulcerative colitis. However, for other indications, data for FMT are limited, with randomized controlled trials rare, typically small and often conflicting. Studies are continuing to explore the role of FMT for many other conditions, including Crohn's disease, functional g

Landfill are important reservoirs of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). They harbor diverse contaminants, such as heavy metals and persistent organic chemicals, complex microbial consortia, and anaerobic degradation processes, which facilitate the occurrence, development, and transfer of ARGs and antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB). The main concern is that antibiotics and developed ARGs and ARB may transfer to the local environment via leachate and landfill leakage. In this paper, we provide an overview of established studies on antibiotics and ARGs in landfills, summarize th

Plants pass transgenerational inheritance through genetic and epigenetic information; however, the soil's role as the host environment in this memory transfer remains largely unexplored. Research within this field has largely been domain-specific, with only 117 publications in 24 years integrating fields of soil persistent metabolites (soil chemistry), stress-induced microbial consortia (soil microbiology), and plant molecular science (plant epigenetics). In this perspective article, we synthesize evidence and propose a testable hypothesis, the Hologenomic Stress Legacy (HSL) hypothesis. It st

BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene) are common pollutants often found in former gasworks sites together with some other contaminants like indene, indane and naphthalene (Ie, Ia, N). This study aimed to evaluate the inhibitory or stimulative substrate interactions between BTEX, and Ie, Ia, N during aerobic biodegradation. For this, batch bottles, containing originally anaerobic subsurface sediments, groundwater and indigenous microorganisms from a contaminated former gasworks site, were spiked with various substrate combinations (BTEX, BTEXIe, BTEXIa, BTEXN, BTEXIeIa, BTEXIeN, BTEXIaN

The composition of the oral microbiome differs from one intraoral site to another, reflecting in part the host response and immune capacity at each site. By focusing on two major oral infections, periodontal disease and caries, new principles of disease emerge. Periodontal disease affects the soft tissues and bone that support the teeth. Caries is a unique infection of the dental hard tissues. The initiation of both diseases is marked by an increase in the complexity of the microbiome. In periodontitis, pathobionts and keystone pathogens such as Porphyromonas gingivalis appear in greater propo
