The visceral peritoneum of intraabdominal organs (spleen, stomach, liver, small intestine), omentum majus and the parietal peritoneum of the anterior abdominal wall and the diaphragm were studied in adult Wistar rats by combined scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM, TEM). In general, the peritoneal surface consisted of a mesothelium composed of cubic, flat or intermediate cell types delimited by a basal lamina. Cubic mesothelial cells predominated in parenchymal organs (spleen, liver) and were characterized by prominent and indentated nuclei, a cytoplasm richly supplied with orga

BACKGROUND: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are prevalent among athletes and the general population, with ACL reconstruction (ACLR) being the standard treatment. However, effective tendon-bone healing (TBH) remains a challenge. Hydroxyapatite (HAp), widely used in orthopaedics and dentistry, has yet to be fully explored for its potential to enhance TBH.
HYPOTHESIS: HAp-coated, reinforced, nonabsorbable suture materials can act as a bioactive and osteoinductive bridge, expediting TBH after ACLR.
STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study.
METHODS: Gelatin-based solutions were used t

The amyloidoses are a family of diseases in which misfolded precursor proteins aggregate to form amyloid and deposit in body tissues. A very serious yet underrecognized form of this disease is cardiac amyloidosis, in which amyloid deposits into the extracellular space of the myocardium, resulting in thickening and stiffening of ventricular walls with resultant heart failure and conductive dysfunction. This review provides a discussion of the pathogenesis and clinical presentation of cardiac amyloidosis subtypes, as well as an up-to-date approach to diagnosis and treatment. Significant progress

Amyloidosis is a rare disease that is often seen in conjunction with multiple myeloma (MM). Its damage varies depending on the anatomical site affected; however, it is believed that many cases of amyloidosis are misrecognized due to the fact that its signs and symptoms are nonspecific. Joint amyloidosis, in particular, may be confused with degenerative or autoimmune diseases. When it is associated with MM, it can significantly precede the diagnosis of the latter. We describe a case report of a woman of Nigerian heritage diagnosed with MM with widespread joint manifestations compatible with a d

Visualization of RNA and DNA provides a window of opportunity for the early detection of multiple diseases and approaches to manipulate them before any pathological processes occur. However, current imaging systems often fail to meet these demands due to the need for multiple RNA and DNA chemical probes, which increases experimental complexity, reduces awareness of false positives, and limits imaging accuracy in complex biosystems. In this work, we identify the key challenges associated with using multiple probes for RNA and DNA imaging and analyze the mechanisms and performance of existing im

Cardiac amyloidosis is frequently misdiagnosed, denying patients the opportunity for timely and appropriate management of the disease. The purpose of this review and case studies is to raise awareness of the diagnostic "red flags" associated with cardiac amyloidosis and the currently available non-invasive strategies for diagnosis. The review focuses on the identification of one of the two main types of cardiac amyloidosis, transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy, and non-invasive tools to distinguish this from light-chain amyloidosis. A diagnostic algorithm centered around the use of non-invasiv

Amyloidosis is a localized or systemic disease caused by deposition of proteins in the extracellular space of various organs and tissues. As part of the disease, proteins that were originally soluble misfold and acquire a fibrillar conformation that renders them insoluble and resistant to proteolysis. Systemic amyloidosis is a rare, often underdiagnosed condition. In recent years, the incidence of newly diagnosed cases of amyloidosis has been increasing in association with the aging of the population and greater access to diagnostic tests. From a clinical perspective, systemic amyloidosis is f

Being "between Scylla and Charybdis" is an idiom derived from Greek mythology to mean "between a rock and a hard place" and clinicians managing amyloid light-chain (AL) amyloidosis often find themselves in this predicament. AL amyloidosis is caused by monoclonal light chains, most commonly produced by CD-38 positive plasma cells in target organs. The disease usually involves significant cardiac and/or renal involvement, but the systemic nature of the disease often leads to variable and non-specific manifestations that can critically delay early diagnosis and treatment. Here, we present a case

Background/Objectives: Cardiac amyloidosis (CA) is an underdiagnosed and potentially life-threatening infiltrative cardiomyopathy characterized by the extracellular deposition of misfolded amyloid fibrils in cardiac tissue. It is most commonly associated with light-chain (AL) amyloidosis and transthyretin (ATTR) amyloidosis, either hereditary or wild-type. The disease often presents with non-specific symptoms, leading to delayed diagnosis and treatment. This study aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the pathophysiology, diagnostic strategies, and current therapeutic approaches for card

BACKGROUND: Multiple myeloma (MM) can be accompanied by amyloidosis, which occurs in a small number of patients and is characterized by deposition of light chains in the joints, leading to multiple myeloma-associated amyloid arthropathy (MAA). As a rare complication of MM, clinical manifestations of MAA are often similar to those of rheumatoid arthritis, and the two are easily confused.
CASE SUMMARY: In recent years, our center treated two patients of MM with amyloid arthropathy as the first manifestation, both of whom presented with polyarthritis. After treatment for MM, both patients achiev

Cardiac amyloidosis (CA) represents an increasingly recognized but historically underdiagnosed cause of restrictive cardiomyopathy and heart failure. CA is now understood to be more prevalent, particularly in older adults, as advancements in imaging and biomarker technologies have improved detection. The disease results from the misfolding of precursor proteins, primarily immunoglobulin light chains (in light chain (AL) amyloidosis) or transthyretin (in transthyretin (ATTR) amyloidosis), into insoluble fibrils that deposit in myocardial tissue. These deposits cause structural and functional ca

ObjectiveLight chain (AL) amyloidosis is a life-threatening disorder characterised by extracellular deposition of amyloid leading to dysfunction of multiple organs. Peripheral nerve involvement, particularly small fibre neuropathy, may be associated with poorer survival. Corneal confocal microscopy (CCM) is a rapid and non-invasive imaging technique to quantify corneal small nerve fibres and immune cells in vivo. We aimed to evaluate CCM as a tool for early diagnosis of peripheral nerve involvement in AL amyloidosis.MethodsCCM and nerve conduction studies (NCS) were undertaken in 21 newly diag

Despite the benign nature of monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS), mounting data are associating MGUS with the development of organ dysfunction, specifically monoclonal gammopathy of renal significance (MGRS) and monoclonal gammopathy of neurological significance (MGNS), which could be associated with substantial morbidity. Emerging evidence suggests that patients with MGRS and MGNS could benefit from treatments used for myeloma, Waldenström macroglobulinemia, or chronic lymphocytic leukemia, depending on the underlying pathology. However, the treatment of MGRS and MGNS is

Amyloidosis is a disorder characterized by misfolded precursor proteins that form depositions of fibrillar aggregates with an abnormal cross-beta-sheet conformation, known as amyloid, in the extracellular space of several tissues. Although there are more than 30 known amyloidogenic proteins, both hereditary and non-hereditary, cardiac amyloidosis (CA) typically arises from either misfolded transthyretin (ATTR amyloidosis) or immunoglobulin light-chain aggregation (AL amyloidosis). Its prevalence is more common than previously thought, especially among patients with heart failure and preserved
