Hypoglycemic effects of a Fructus Mori polysaccharide in vitro and in vivo.

Mulberry fruit polysaccharide (MFP), one of the major active ingredients isolated from the mulberry fruit, possesses numerous bioactivities. In vitro hypoglycemic experiments showed that MFP had significant insulin-sensitizing activity through increasing insulin secretion and promoting pancreatic β cell proliferation. In vivo, the oral administration of MFP could significantly decrease blood glucose levels and increase body weight loss in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic mice. MFP also significantly decreased the level of malondialdehyde (MDA) and increased the activities of antioxidant e

Colon-Targeted Mucoadhesive PLGA Microspheres Loaded with Ramulus Mori Alkaloids for Enhanced Water-Soluble Drug Delivery in Ulcerative Colitis Treatment.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammation disease with severe impact on quality of life, with limited treatment options. Ramulus Mori alkaloids (SZ-A) from Morus alba show promise for UC treatment due to their safety and pharmacological effects, including anti-inflammation and barrier repair. However, their clinical use has been limited by gastrointestinal flatulence as a side effect due to their pharmacological action as an α-glucosidase inhibitor targeting the small intestine following oral administration. Therefore, constructing a colon-targeted formulation to deliver SZ-A is an adv

Pharmacological and Clinical Studies of Medicinal Plants That Inhibit Dipeptidyl Peptidase-IV.

Dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP-IV) is an enzyme responsible for the degradation of the incretin hormone glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1). DPP-IV plays a significant role in regulating blood glucose levels by modulating the activity of GLP-1. In the context of diabetes, DPP-IV inhibitors effectively block the activity of DPP-IV, hence mitigating the degradation of GLP-1. This, in turn, leads to an extension of GLP-1's duration of action, prolongs gastric emptying, enhances insulin sensitivity, and ultimately results in the reduction of blood glucose levels. Nonetheless, reported adverse events of

Variety-Specific Responses of Mulberry to Copper-Induced Stress.

Copper (Cu) is an essential plant micronutrient, but in excessive amounts it becomes phytotoxic, making Cu contamination of agricultural soils an important environmental concern. Because Cu tolerance mechanisms are complex and often genotype-specific, there is growing interest in multipurpose crops capable of thriving under metal stress. Mulberry is one of such species, which enables the combination of diverse agricultural uses with notable tolerance to heavy metals. In the present study, the tolerance to Cu-induced stress of five varieties belonging to Morus alba and M. indica was assessed in

Sipi soup inhibits cancer‑associated fibroblast activation and the inflammatory process by downregulating long non‑coding RNA HIPK1‑AS.

Sipi soup (SPS), the aqueous extract derived from the root bark of Sophora japonical L, Salix babylonica L., Morus alba L., as well as Amygdalus davidiana (Carr.) C. de Vos, is a traditional Chinese medicine frequently used to prevent and treat infection and inflammation. However, the role of SPS in cancer‑associated fibroblasts (CAFs) require further investigation. In the present study, the effects of SPS on fibroblast inactivation and the underlying mechanism were investigated. Reverse transcription‑quantitative polymerase chain reaction was used to analyze the mRNA expression levels of fibr

Host susceptibility of citrus cultivars to Queensland fruit fly (Diptera: Tephritidae).

Citrus crops are considered to be relatively poor hosts for Queensland fruit fly, Bactrocera tryoni (Froggatt), as for other tephritid species. Australian citrus growers and crop consultants have reported observable differences in susceptibility of different citrus cultivars under commercial growing conditions. In this study we conducted laboratory tests and field surveys to determine susceptibility to B. tryoni of six citrus cultivars [(Eureka lemon (Citrus limon (L.) Osbeck); Navel and Valencia oranges (C. sinensis (L.) Osbeck); and Imperial, Ellendale, and Murcott mandarins (C. reticulata B

Ultrasound-assisted deep eutectic solvent extraction and macroporous resin enrichment of polyphenols from Cortex Mori: Screening of tyrosinase inhibitors via affinity ultrafiltration-LC-MS and molecular docking.

Cortex Mori, the dried root bark of Morus alba L., is a rich source of polyphenolic compounds. In this study, an ultrasound-assisted deep eutectic solvent (UAE-DES) strategy was developed for the efficient extraction of polyphenols from Cortex Mori, combined with macroporous resin enrichment and subsequent chemical and functional characterization. Among 36 deep eutectic solvents evaluated, betaine-sucrose (DES-6) exhibited the best extraction performance. Response surface methodology optimized the UAE-DES conditions as 35% water content, 57 °C, liquid-to-solid ratio of 90 mL/g, ultrasound time

Mulberry water extract alleviates osteoarthritis via Lactobacillus johnsonii-dependent bile acid restoration.

BACKGROUND: Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a chronic degenerative joint disorder associated with dysregulated polarization of synovial macrophages. Natural plant-based medicines, characterized by their multi-component and multi-target properties, exhibit unique advantages in immune regulation and gut microbiota modulation. Despite this potential, the therapeutic roles of such interventions in the management of KOA remain inadequately explored. METHODS: This study investigated the therapeutic potential of mulberry water extract (MWE), a safe and sustainable preparation derived from mulberry frui

Mulberry water extracts (MWEs) ameliorated carbon tetrachloride-induced liver damages in rat.

Mulberry extracts are antidiabetic and antihyperlipidemic, as well as preventive of cardiovascular disease. The current study investigates the protective mechanisms of mulberry water extracts (MWEs) in carbon tetrachloride (CCl(4))-induced hepatic injury. Oral administration of MWEs significantly reduced the lipid peroxidation triggered by CCl(4), as shown by the reduced production of thiobarituric acid-reactive substance (TBARS). The levels of serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) were also reduced via cotreatment with MWEs comp

Effectiveness of Intravenous Corticosteroid in Patients with Ulcerative Colitis after Oral Corticosteroid Failure: Differences by Prior Response to Oral Therapy in a Multicenter Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Post-infectious cough (PIC) is a leading cause of chronic cough in children, often persisting after respiratory infections and significantly impairing quality of life. Current therapies, such as montelukast sodium (MAS), offer only partial symptom relief and do not target the underlying inflammatory and microbiota-driven mechanisms. Emerging evidence suggests that the lung-gut axis, ERK pathway activation, and cytokine-microbiota interactions are central to PIC pathogenesis. Morusin, a prenylated flavonoid from Morus alba, possesses anti-inflammatory and barrier-protective activiti

Competition and Facilitation Influence Central Place Foraging Ecology in a Colonial Marine Predator.

Coloniality is strongly shaped by aspects of social foraging behaviour. For example, colonies may be important sources of information, while food competition may increase foraging efforts and limit colony size. Understanding foraging ecology considering these apparent trade-offs is required to develop a better understanding of colonial living. We combined animal-borne GPS, cameras and dive recorders to study social foraging in breeding adult northern gannets Morus bassanus-a wide-ranging colonial seabird. We first tested for indirect evidence of prey depletion around the colony by estimating d

Natural sources of melanogenic inhibitors: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: Melanin gives some natural protection against the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation; however, excessive production of melanin causes skin hyperpigmentation. Depigmenting cosmetics can be used to control this process; however, depigmenting agents commonly used have some disadvantages, such as low bioavailability, photosensitization, cellular toxicity, and insolubility. Natural sources of melanogenic inhibitors have become important alternatives to synthetic ones. The objective of this review was to summarize the results of studies on natural extracts that have been reported in

Quantifying iris pigmentation irregularities following an avian influenza outbreak: implications for population-level disease surveillance in a colonial seabird.

Emerging infectious diseases can have catastrophic impacts on wildlife populations, yet identifying individuals that survived exposure, especially when external symptoms are absent, remains challenging. Since 2021, a virulent strain of highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAIV; H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b) has caused unprecedented mortality in wild birds. Northern gannets (Morus bassanus) suffered dramatic mortality and reproductive failure at North America's largest colony in 2022. Following the outbreak, Lane et al. reported that a subset of gannets at a UK colony displayed darkened irises asso

Hepatoprotective activity of mulberry extract in NAFLD mice for regulating lipid metabolism and inflammation identified via AMPK/PPAR-γ/NF-κB axis.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one of the most prevalent liver diseases worldwide, with an estimated global prevalence of 30 %. An imbalance in lipid metabolism leads to the accumulation of lipotoxic lipids, inducing cellular stress, activating the NLRP3 inflammasome, and triggering apoptotic cell death. This cascade stimulates inflammation, driving NAFLD progression. Morus nigra L. is the only black mulberry species native to China. In traditional Uygur medicine, its fruit is valued for its hepatoprotective and lipid-lowering effects. AIM OF THE
