OBJECTIVE: To investigate if harvesting of semitendinosus (ST) and gracilis for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction will have an effect in coordinative firing pattern of the hamstrings under fatigue. We hypothesized that fatigue will increase the electromechanical delay (EMD) of the hamstrings on the harvested site and impair the synchronization between the medial and lateral hamstrings, in terms of muscle activity onsets.
DESIGN: Prospective nonrandomized study.
SETTING: Institutional.
PATIENTS: Twelve ACL reconstructed patients with hamstrings, 2 years postoperatively.

The purpose of the present study was to examine the effects of wearing a graduated elastic compression (EC) stocking, with different pressure profiles during a fatiguing calf-raise exercise session, on the torque generating capacity after exercise. Fourteen subjects performed 15 sets of 10 repetitions of calf-raise exercise, wearing one of three stockings of different compression pressure profiles: two kinds of EC stockings (one (EC30) with 30mmHg at the ankle, 21-25mmHg at the calf, and 10mmHg below the knee, and the other (EC18) with 18, 12-14, and 7mmHg at the same regions, respectively) an

Detailed electromyographic (EMG) analysis of primarily triceps brachii muscle was carried out on subjects who performed 100 repeated and exhaustive stretch-shortening cycle (SSC) exercises on a special sledge apparatus incorporating a force plate. The fatigue contractions were performed on submaximal levels but the before-after comparison included also maximal "drop jumps" on the sledge as well as falls on to the floor. SSC contractions caused clear reduction in the mechanical performance capacity of the muscles. EMG analysis revealed that integrated EMG (IEMG) increased during the course of f

BACKGROUND: Inadequate recovery from exercise-induced muscle fatigue (EIMF) can negatively impact subsequent athletic performance. Although static stretching is widely used, its effectiveness remains controversial. The fascia gun, an emerging percussive massage tool, has been shown to alleviate pain, but evidence regarding its efficacy in promoting EIMF recovery compared to traditional stretching is limited. This study aims to compare the recovery effects of fascia gun percussive massage, static stretching, and passive recovery on exercise-induced muscle fatigue of the lower limbs in athletes.

Gaming is demanding, however, the impact of gaming on muscle fatigue and performance changes is unclear. The purpose of this study was to evaluate muscle fatigue and performance impairments during an extended mouse aiming fatigue protocol. Twenty participants were recruited (8F, 12 M), separated into gaming and non-gaming groups. Surface electromyography was measured from eight muscles of the right distal upper limb. Participants performed a 30-second aiming task using aim training software. The fatiguing protocol involved six, 5-minute bouts of hitting targets in AimLab. To assess muscle fati

PURPOSE: Eccentric quasi-isometric (EQI) resistance training is emerging as a promising option in sports medicine and rehabilitation. Despite prior research on EQI contractions in quadriceps and biceps brachii, their use in hamstring injury contexts is underexplored. Therefore, our study examines and contrasts the biomechanics and fatigue effects of EQI training on knee extensors and flexors.
METHODS: Following familiarization, 16 healthy, active participants (9 men, 7 women; 23.5 ± 2.6 years, 72.1 ± 12.8 kg, 173.4 ± 10.7 cm) performed, in random order, four EQI contractions for knee extensio

INTRODUCTION: Enzalutamide is approved for the treatment of patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer. Adverse effects (e.g., fatigue and anorexia) are often observed and cause difficulty with continuous therapy; however, no clinical data describing which patients are more likely to suffer adverse effects were observed. Therefore, this study hypothesized that body composition, comprising body fat distribution and psoas muscle volume, may affect the occurrence of subjective symptoms (e.g., fatigue and anorexia) in prostate cancer patients treated with enzalutamide.

Maneuvering a motorcycle in racing conditions or for prolonged time is sufficiently demanding that on many occasions forearm muscles reach a state of functional failure when riders cannot properly brake or operate the throttle. This study intends to discriminate which ones of the several dynamometric parameters used in the literature to characterize the Force-time (F-t) curve during voluntary contractions are more sensitive to neuromuscular fatigue in simulated motorcycle-riding conditions. Thirty-three adults performed an intermittent fatiguing protocol (IFP) that simulated the brake-pulling

Although there is evidence that 5-HT acts as an excitatory neuromodulator to enhance maximal force generation, it is largely unknown how 5-HT activity influences the ability to sustain a constant force during steady-state contractions. A total of 22 healthy individuals participated in the study, where elbow flexion force was assessed during brief isometric contractions at 10% maximal voluntary contraction (MVC), 60% MVC, MVC, and during a sustained MVC. The selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, paroxetine, suppressed physiological tremor and increased force steadiness when performing the iso

What is the central question of this study? Does metabolic alkalosis affect central and peripheral mechanisms associated with exercise-induced muscle fatigue in humans? What is the main finding and its importance? Inducing metabolic alkalosis before exercise preserved voluntary activation, but not muscle excitation, after a 2 min maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) followed by ischaemia. An effect of pH was also observed in maximal rates of torque development, where alkalosis mitigated the reduction in maximal rates of torque development after the initial 2 min MVC. For the first time, these r

The aim of this study was to determine the changes in body mass and myoglobinuria concentration in recreational runners during a marathon in a warm environment, and the relation of these changes to muscle fatigue. We recruited 138 amateur runners (114 men and 24 women) for the study. Before the race, leg muscle power output was measured during a countermovement jump on a force platform, body weight was measured, and a urine sample was obtained. Within 3 min of race completion (28 °C; 46% relative humidity), the runners repeated the countermovement jump, body weight was measured again, and a se

Functional electrical stimulation (FES) is limited by the rapid onset of muscle fatigue caused by localized nerve excitation repeatedly activating only a subset of motor units. The purpose of this study was to investigate reducing fatigue by sequentially changing, pulse by pulse, the area of stimulation using multiple surface electrodes that cover the same area as one electrode during conventional stimulation. Paralyzed triceps surae muscles of an individual with complete spinal cord injury were stimulated, via the tibial nerve, through four active electrodes using spatially distributed sequen

The aim of this study was to assess the effects of acute passive stretching on the electrical and mechanical response of a previously fatigued muscle. Eleven participants underwent maximal tetanic stimulations (50 Hz) of the medial gastrocnemius, before and after a fatiguing protocol and after a bout of passive stretching of the fatigued muscle. During contraction, surface electromyography (EMG), mechanomyography (MMG), and force were recorded. The following parameters were calculated: (1) the EMG root mean square (RMS), mean frequency, and fibre conduction velocity; (2) MMG peak-to-peak and R

Effects of wide-range fatigue were studied on transient and steady force components of eccentric contraction of cat gastrocnemius. Muscle was activated by distributed stimulation of dissected ventral root L7 with rate of 10/s per filament. Active muscle was stretched through trapezoidal ramp with different velocities (1.25, 2.5, 10 mm/s). Fatiguing sessions consisted of standard test repetitions every 2 minutes. Normalized transient and steady components of extra force (fresh-state value = 1) were respectively 0.77+/-0.04 and 0.78+/-0.02 at 30% muscle tension drop, 0.27+/-0.04 and 0.55+/-0.02

The effects of the ATP-sensitive K+ channel (KATP channel) opener cromakalim on excitation-contraction (E-C) coupling were studied in skeletal muscle during fatiguing and non-fatiguing activity. Intracellular calcium concentration ([Ca2+]i) was monitored using the fluorescent indicator fura-2 in isolated single skeletal muscle fibres enzymatically dissociated from rat flexor digitorum brevis. A protocol of tetanic stimulation (50 Hz for 300 ms) with progressively shorter durations between tetani was used to induce E-C coupling failure in these cells. Cromakalim (100-800 microM) had little effe

In this paper the authors hypothesize that the intensity of subjective experience of vocal fatigue (VF) potentially reflects primary (hyper) functional vocal disorders (primary muscle tension dysphonia - MTD) differently than structural vocal disorders of functional etiology (MTD type 2a). Given the reported benefit of self-evaluation in the quantification of VF, the goal of this study was to test the potential of the Croatian adaptation of the Vocal Fatigue Index questionnaire (VFI-C) in order to show different VF intensities for the two above-mentioned diagnoses of vocal disorders. In total,

Individuals with subacromial impingement syndrome (SAIS) demonstrate altered upper limb muscle coactivation during humeral elevation and overhead tasks. This study investigated the effect of an occupationally-relevant overhead task designed to induce global shoulder muscle fatigue on scapular stabilizer and deltoid-rotator cuff muscle coactivation, and upper limb kinematics. Upper limb muscle activity and kinematics were analyzed from 33 right-handed male (n = 17) and female (n = 16) participants before and immediately following a simulated overhead drilling task. Co-activation was generally n
