Fluorescent mesoporous silica nanotubes incorporating CdS quantum dots for controlled release of ibuprofen.

Mesoporous silica nanotubes (MSNTs) and amine-functionalized MSNTs (NH(2)-MSNTs) have been successfully synthesized via a sol-gel route using needle-like CaCO(3) nanoparticles as inorganic templates and post-modification with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane. Subsequently, the preformed nanotubes were functionalized with blue fluorescent CdS quantum dots, as demonstrated by transmission electron microscopy and confocal laser scanning microscopy. The morphology and microstructure of the produced materials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and N(2) adsorption-desorption measurements

In vivo near-infrared mediated tumor destruction by photothermal effect of carbon nanotubes.

The photothermal therapy using nanomaterials has been recently attracted as an efficient strategy for the next generation of cancer treatments. Single walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) is an upcoming potent candidate for the photothermal therapeutic agent since it generates significant amounts of heat upon excitation with near-infrared light (NIR, lambda = 700-1100 nm) which is transparent to biological systems including skins. Such a photothermal effect can be employed to induce thermal cell death in a noninvasive manner. Here, we demonstrate in vivo obliteration of solid malignant tumors by the

Carbon nanotubes as functional excipients for nanomedicines: II. Drug delivery and biocompatibility issues.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have potential novel application in nanomedicine as biocompatible and supportive substrates, and as pharmaceutical excipients for creating versatile drug delivery systems. In the second part of this two-part review we focus on the application of CNTs as potential drug delivery systems via chemical functionalization of CNTs for exterior binding of therapeutic and biologically relevant molecules, and via encapsulation of these molecules within the inner cavities of CNTs. We review experimental results of CNT-mediated delivery of small molecules, DNA, proteins, and vaccine

Liquid crystal cells with built-in CdSe nanotubes for chromogenic smart emission devices.

A simple and general approach for controlling optical anisotropy of nanostructured semiconductors is reported. Our design involves the fabrication of liquid crystal devices with built-in semiconductor nanotubes. Quite interestingly, it is found that semiconductor nanotubes can be well aligned along the orientation of liquid crystals molecules automatically, resulting in a very large emission anisotropy with the degree of polarization up to 72%. This intriguing result manifests a way to obtain well aligned semiconductor nanotubes and the emission anisotropy can be easily manipulated by an exter

Single-walled carbon nanotubes: geno- and cytotoxic effects in lung fibroblast V79 cells.

With the development of nanotechnology, there is a tremendous growth of the application of nanomaterials, which increases the risk of human exposure to these nanomaterials through inhalation, ingestion, and dermal penetration. Among different types of nanoparticles, single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) with extremely small size (1 nm in diameter) exhibit extraordinary properties and offer possibilities to create materials with astounding features. Since the release of nanoparticles in an enclosed environment is of great concern, a study of possible genotoxic effects is important. Our previou

Unusual inflammatory and fibrogenic pulmonary responses to single-walled carbon nanotubes in mice.

Nephrotic syndrome is often accompanied by sodium retention and generalized edema. We hypothesize that dysregulation of the epithelial sodium channel (ENaC) and/or of sodium (co)transporters may be responsible for the increased sodium retention associated with HgCl(2)-induced nephropathy. In addition, we examined the hypothesis that the expression of type 2 11beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (11betaHSD2) is reduced, contributing to the enhanced mineralocorticoid activity. Membranous nephropathy was induced in Brown Norway rats by repeated injections of HgCl(2) (1 mg/kg sc), whereas the contro

Low-temperature growth of carbon nanotubes from the catalytic decomposition of carbon tetrachloride.

Multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were synthesized via the decomposition of CCl4 in supercritical CO2 at 175 degrees C and 27.6 MPa using an iron-encapsulated dendrimer as a growth catalyst. The average diameter of resultant nanotubes was 20-25 nm, obtained after a 24-h reaction time. Our conditions represent the first application for CX4 precursors, as well as the lowest-reported temperature regime for carbon nanotube growth, allowing the use of other temperature-sensitive catalytic substrates.

Layer-by-Layer Assembly of Glucose Oxidase on Carbon Nanotube Modified Electrodes.

The use of enzymatically modified electrodes for the detection of glucose or other nonelectrochemically active analytes is becoming increasingly common. Direct heterogeneous electron transfer to glucose oxidase has been shown to be kinetically slow, which is why electron transfer mediators or indirect detection is usually used for monitoring glucose with electrochemical sensors. It has been found, however, that electrodes modified with single or multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) demonstrate fast heterogeneous electron transfer kinetics as compared with that found for traditional electrodes.

Frequency-dependent topological polaritons in carbon nanotube array/hBN heterostructures.

Plasmons in carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have attracted significant attention due to their strong spatial confinement and high-quality factors. However, constrained by CNTs' intrinsic electronic characteristics, modulation of their plasmon dispersion relations remains a significant challenge. Here, we report frequency-dependent topological polaritons arising from the coupling between hyperbolic plasmons and phonon polaritons in CNT-array/hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) heterostructures. In particular, we achieved a controllable topological transition of the polariton wavefront from hyperbolic to elli

Salt-bridged macrocycles as building blocks for aqueous supramolecular nanotube formation.

The programmed construction of nanotubular architectures through self-assembly remains a major challenge in supramolecular chemistry, especially when targeting pores with dimensions within the molecular scale (1-5 nm) in aqueous media. This work introduces a strategy that integrates covalent design with ionic hydrogen bonding interactions to generate discrete macrocycles that subsequently stack into nanotubes. Both supramolecular processes - cyclization and polymerization - were studied independently through a combination of 1H NMR, DOSY NMR, mass spectrometry, fluorescence spectroscopy, and S

Interconnection morphology effects on the radio frequency response of carbon nanotube sponges.

In this work, the high-frequency response of a multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) film grown on a silicon substrate is compared with that of MWCNT sponges (CNSs). Different from the CNT film, CNSs are a self-standing material that can operate in the absence of a supporting substrate, showing high flexibility, light weight, and mechanical robustness. We tested our synthesized CNSs as active material for the production of antennas working in the radio frequency (RF) range to determine whether CNT sponges present, in addition to practical advantages over CNT films, also an actual performance gai

Enhanced hemocompatibility and cytocompatibility of halloysite nanotubes via the formation of a protein corona.

Halloysite clay nanotubes (HNTs) show promising applications as hemostatic materials and tissue-repairing materials owing to their unique tubular structure and physicochemical properties. When HNTs enter the body, the protein corona formed on HNTs affects the properties and behavior of the nanoparticles. Here, bovine plasma protein was used as a model protein to study the protein corona on HNTs (PC@HNTs), using chitosan-coated HNTs as a control. The formation of a stable protein corona layer on HNTs was confirmed by particle size, surface potential, and morphology, while circular dichroism ana

Tissue-Adhesive Carbon Nanotube Bioelectronics with Intrinsic Stretchability and Mechanical Adaptation.

Interfaces for soft bioelectronics must retain conformal and low-noise contact with dynamic and hydrated tissues without causing mechanical mismatches. This study integrates a viscoelastic, self-healing polymer (SHP) with a surface-embedded carbon nanotube (CNT) network and a catechol-modified alginate (Alg-CA) overlayer to enable wet adhesion while preserving polymer-like mechanical properties. Tensile tests across representative strain rates (3.3 and 50% s-1) indicate that CNT-SHP exhibits a stress-strain response similar to that of pristine SHP. Fracture-energy analysis and rapid stress rel

Carbon nanotube‑ and hydroxyapatite‑coated implants: histomorphometric assessment in a rabbit model.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate whether the integration of functionalized carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with hydroxyapatite (HA) could create a bioactive nanocomposite capable of enhancing the early stages of osseointegration. Specifically, we investigated whether the high surface area and nanoscale structure of CNTs, combined with the osteoconductivity of 1% HA, could significantly enhance bone-to-implant contact (BIC) and new bone area (NBA) compared to traditional titanium surfaces in a mandibular model. METHODS: Here we evaluated the osseointegration of titanium implant discs coated

Composite bone cements based on halloysite nanotube with enhanced drug elution.

Antibiotic-loaded PMMA (polymethylmethacrylate) bone cement (ALBC) is widely used to prevent and treat periprosthetic joint infections (PJIs), yet its clinical efficacy is limited by issues like burst release and short release duration. To address these challenges, this study developed a composite bone cement (HV-PMMA) loaded with vancomycin-functionalized halloysite nanotubes (HNTs-Van). The results showed that HV-PMMA optimized antibiotic elution: it avoided initial burst release, and the drug elution amount of HV-PMMA was superior to that of traditional ALBC with vancomycin formulation. The

Carbon Polarization and Carbon Nanotube Stacking Impacts the Behavior of Water in Nanoconfinement.

The structural and dynamical properties of water confined in subnanometer, single-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are investigated using molecular dynamics simulations. With radii ranging from 4 to 8 Å, we assess confinement-size effects using fully flexible CNTs with explicit carbon polarizability and the MB-pol water model. Density distributions reveal, that single-file water chains form in the narrow (10,0) CNT, pentagonal ring structures form in the intermediate (15,0) CNT, and a two-layer arrangement forms in the wider (20,0) CNT. Angular distributions show that the influence of carbon pol

Sonicated Carbon Nanotube Catalysts for Efficient Point-of-use Water Treatment.

The rising demand for freshwater and increasing contamination of distributed water sources, such as stormwater and surface water, necessitate innovative point-of-use treatment technologies. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) using solid oxidants offer a promising approach for decentralized freshwater production but are often limited by nonselective radical reactions that degrade both pollutants and background water constituents. Here, sonicated carbon nanotubes (CNTs) that efficiently activate peroxymonosulfate are demonstrated, enabling selective contaminant degradation via dual nonradical p

Interpericyte tunnelling nanotube loss in very early diabetic retinal disease.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Interpericyte tunnelling nanotubes (IP-TNTs) regulate microvascular blood flow by coordinating pericyte-pericyte communication across distant capillaries in the retina. Perfusion abnormalities are observed in preclinical diabetic retinopathy, and the state of IP-TNTs in this condition is unknown. METHODS: Using high-resolution confocal microscopy with isolated perfusion labelling of human donor retina, we investigated changes to IP-TNTs, pericytes and capillaries in the macular vasculature of individuals with preclinical diabetic retinopathy (n=7) and control individuals (n=1

Mass Production of Carbon Nanotube Transistor Biosensors for Point-of-Care Tests.

Low-dimensional semiconductor-based field-effect transistor (FET) biosensors are promising for label-free detection of biotargets while facing challenges in mass fabrication of devices and reliable reading of small signals. Here, we construct a reliable technology for mass production of semiconducting carbon nanotube (CNT) film and FET biosensors. High-uniformity randomly oriented CNT films were prepared through an improved immersion coating technique, and then, CNT FETs were fabricated with coefficient of performance variations within 6% on 4-in. wafers (within 9% interwafer) based on an indu
