Cervical radiculopathy is a disease process marked by nerve compression from herniated disk material or arthritic bone spurs. This impingement typically produces neck and radiating arm pain or numbness, sensory deficits, or motor dysfunction in the neck and upper extremities. Magnetic resonance imaging or computed tomographic myelography can confirm neurologic compression. The overall prognosis of persons with cervical radiculopathy is favorable. Most patients improve over time with a focused, nonoperative treatment course. There is little high-quality evidence on the best nonoperative therapy

We report a case of an adult woman with an Eagle's Syndrome (ES) treated with medical therapy. ES is characterized by an aspecific orofacial pain secondary to calcification of the stylohyoid ligament or elongated styoid process. In about 4% of general population an elongated styloid process occurs, while only about 4% of these patients are symptomatic. We report a case of a 49-year-old lady with a 1-year history of oro-pharyngeal foreign body sensation localized at the left tonsillar fossa, associated with a dull intermittent pain. A bony projection was palpable with bimanual transoral explora

OBJECTIVES: To study the natural history of prolonged neck pain and the effectiveness of bone setting as its treatment.
METHODS: A randomized clinical trial with blinded outcome assessment and 1-year follow-up was completed. Forty-two working-aged patients with nonspecific neck pain for at least 1 month and no contraindications to manipulative therapies were recruited. They were randomly allocated into 5 weekly sessions of bone setting provided by 2 experienced folk healers (22 patients) or follow-up without therapy (20 patients). The primary outcomes were neck mobility after the 5-week thera

Eighty-one patients suffering from neck pain and tension-type headaches were treated by the application of a unique physical therapy device combining transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), traction, massage, vibration, and acupressure applied to the forehead, posterior cervical spine, and scapula. The device employed eight silver silicone electrodes for modality application. Its safety and effectiveness were assessed by evaluating patients before and after treatment. No complication ensued. Statistical analysis of visual analog scales for neck pain and headache yielded p values <

BACKGROUND: Retropharyngeal calcific tendinitis is an aseptic inflammation of the longus cervicis muscle. This rare acute pain disorder of the neck region is a prognostically benign condition compared to neurological or otorhinolaryngological differential diagnoses.
OBJECTIVE: To capture the clinical appearance, diagnostics, treatment and course of this rare disease.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this retrospective monocentric observational study, demographic, clinical, paraclinical as well as treatment and follow-up data of all inpatients with a diagnosis of retropharyngeal calcific tendinitis a

This is a protocol for a Cochrane Review (intervention). The objectives are as follows: The primary objective is to assess the benefits and harms of glucocorticoid facet joint injections in adults with chronic back or neck pain that is presumed to be facet joint-mediated. The secondary objective is to assess whether the effects differ by diagnostic method for facet joint-mediated pain.

INTRODUCTION: Acute thyrotoxic myopathy (ATM) is a rare and potentially lethal complication of thyrotoxicosis. The typical clinical symptoms of ATM are characterized by bulbar paralysis. Reports of the successful treatment of ATM are sporadic due to its low incidence. However, no English literature has reported Chinese patients with ATM and neck pain. Here, we report for the first time a Chinese patient with ATM and neck pain who recovered through large doses of systemic glucocorticoids and one intrathyroidal steroid injection.

Brucellosis, is a zoonosis infection with a planetary distribution, caused by facultative intracellular bacteria of the genus Brucella, thus has a variable clinical presentation. Spinal epidural abscesses are a rare presentation of the disease, and may carry risk of a neurovascular compromise. Here we report a 22-year-old male with spinal brucellosis complicated by a cervical epidural abscess. The diagnosis was based on presenting symptoms and his occupation, confirmed by laboratory investigations, blood culture and magnetic resonance imaging results. Surgical drainage of abscess was performed

Neck pain is a common reason for seeking medical attention. It affects at least 15% of the labor force and up to 40% of individuals whose occupation is hazardous. On the other hand, primary bone lymphoma is a very rare disease (less than 1% of all malignant bone tumors), and the relationship between the 2 has rarely been mentioned. We report the case of a patient who had a 1-month history of neck pain. The main symptom was pain on palpation of C2-C6 cervical spinous processes and contracture of the trapezius muscle that did not cease with conventional treatment. Imaging studies indicated an ab

OBJECTIVE: General practitioners refer patients with continued neck pain that do not respond well to conservative care frequently to secondary care for further assessment. Are surgical interventions to the cervical spine effective when compared to conservative care for patients with neck pain?
DESIGN: Systematic review.
METHOD: The search strategy outlined by the Cochrane Back Review Group (CBRG) was followed. The primary search was conducted in MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, CENTRAL, and PEDro up to June 2011. Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) and controlled clinical trials (CCTs) of adults wit

Several theories about musculoskeletal pain syndromes such as whiplash-associated disorder (WAD) suggest that pain and muscle activity interact and may contribute to the chronicity of symptoms. Studies using surface electromyography (sEMG) have demonstrated abnormal muscle activation patterns of the upper trapezius muscles in the chronic stage of WAD (grade II). There are, however, no studies that confirm that these muscle reactions are initiated in the acute stage of WAD, nor that these muscle reactions persist in the transition from acute neck pain to chronic neck pain disability. We analyze

Two hundred five patients with neck pain were evaluated clinically and roentgenographically for a minimum of 10 years after onset of symptoms. Seventy-nine percent had a decrease in pain, and 43% were free of pain; however, 32% had moderate or severe residual pain. Patients who had been injured and initially had severe pain were the most likely to have an unsatisfactory outcome; however, no other clinical features were of value in predicting the final result. The presence or severity of pain was not related to the presence of degenerative changes, the sagittal diameter of the spinal canal, the

BACKGROUND: In the context of neck pain, neck muscle activity adapts through diverse regional coordination modifications during tasks. Although patterns of cervical flexor muscle impairment are well-documented, patterns in the cervical extensor muscles are less clear, hindering assessment and treatment. Despite studies revealing adaptations in the cervical extensor muscles, outcome measure heterogeneity complicates interpretation, particularly between superficial and deep muscles. To address this, we conducted a systematic review comparing neck extensor muscle activity between symptomatic and

BACKGROUND: The myofascial chains or superficial backline association with hamstring tightness during neck pain is known. This mechanism leads to altered gait parameters and neck-related disability, and increased pain. Hence, we hypothesized that retro-walking activation of the hamstring muscle could help decrease muscle tension, which in turn should reduce stress and pain in the neck.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of retro-walking on neck pain, disability, and spatiotemporal variables of gait in individuals with chronic mechanical neck pain (CMNP).
METHODS: An experimental study of the
