The causes of hematuria are briefly outlined and an approach to the diagnosis of this common finding is suggested. All cases require investigation, since even less than ten RBCs per high-power field may be the first sign of a malignant neoplasm or other serious disease. The most common causes are stones, malignant neoplasm, urethrotrigonitis, bacterial infection, prostatic hypertrophy, and glomerulonephritis; however, there are many other conditions to be kept in mind. A few simple laboratory tests will detect easily diagnosed problems such as bacterial infection, while more extensive and inva

BACKGROUND: Our current knowledge of diabetes mellitus in intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm is very limited and its prevalence and predictive value for malignant transformation are not clear. This study sought to systematically review the literature to define the prevalence of diabetes mellitus in intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm and to evaluate the association of diabetes mellitus with the progression to high-grade dysplasia or invasive cancer.
METHODS: A PubMed/Medline systematic search was performed to identify studies reporting data on preoperative diabetes mellitus in intrad

Intracholecystic papillary-tubular neoplasms (ICPNs) account for <0.5% of all cholecystectomies. There is a lack of significant published data from the Indian subcontinent on ICPN to the best of our knowledge. The objective of the current study was to describe the clinicopathological features of ICPN of gallbladder from the departmental archives during a 5.5-year period. We also aimed to classify them into various histological subtypes and to correlate the clinicopathological parameters of ICPN with invasive adenocarcinoma. This study included 36 cases diagnosed over a period of 5.5 years (201

Intracholecystic papillary-tubular neoplasm (ICPN) is a preinvasive neoplasm arising from the gallbladder mucosa, with a better prognosis than conventional gallbladder carcinoma; however, accurate preoperative differentiation based solely on imaging remains challenging. When complicated by infection, inflammatory changes often mimic tumor invasion, making it difficult to accurately evaluate the tumor extent. We report the case of an 83-year-old male with a liver abscess and suspected advanced gallbladder carcinoma. Initial imaging suggested invasion of the liver and right hepatic artery, and t

Diagnosis and classification of ovarian epithelial neoplasms in guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) are challenging due to inconsistent terminology and few available diagnostic criteria. This study evaluated 23 ovarian epithelial neoplasms in 15 guinea pigs with the objectives of (1) differentiating ovarian surface epithelial (OSE) neoplasms from rete ovarii neoplasms using immunohistochemistry, (2) describing salient histologic features, and (3) classifying neoplasms according to canine, human, and rodent classification schemes. PAX-8 immunohistochemistry separated immunoreactive rete neoplasms fro

Expression of insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I), its receptor, and IGF-binding proteins (IGFBPs) by epithelial ovarian cancer cells and its mitogenic effect on these cells in vitro suggest that IGF-I may have a role in the regulation of human ovarian cancer. To examine this role in vivo, we explored the IGF-I/IGFBP system in sera and cyst fluids of women undergoing surgery for simple and other benign cysts (n = 20) and borderline (n = 5) and invasive malignant epithelial neoplasms (n = 11). The IGF-I level was significantly higher in cyst fluid from invasive malignant compared to cyst fluid

BACKGROUND: Carcinosarcoma of the salivary glands is a rare neoplasm, and the minimally invasive form constitutes a subgroup with a more favorable prognosis. The cytomorphologic features of this neoplasm can be appreciated on fine-needle aspiration biopsy.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We present a patient with a minimally invasive carcinosarcoma ex non-recurrent pleomorphic adenoma (Ca ex PA) who underwent initial fine-needle aspiration biopsy followed by surgical resection. The tumor was composed predominantly of a light microscopic pleomorphic high-grade sarcoma exhibiting partial myoepithelial imm

A 74-year-old man with back pain, foot numbness, and hip/thigh radiculopathy was found to have an L1-L2 intradural extramedullary neoplasm and severe L4-L5 stenosis. L4-L5 minimally invasive laminectomy for decompression and concomitant L1-L2 minimally invasive laminectomy for tumor resection were planned. L4-L5 laminectomy was completed first followed by the L1-L2 laminectomy. On extensive intradural exploration at L1-L2, no neoplasm was found. Immediate postoperative imaging showed that the intradural extramedullary tumor had migrated caudally by nearly a complete spinal level, presumably du

BACKGROUND: Paraspinal spindle cell mesenchymal neoplasms of myofibroblastic origin are extremely rare, particularly in the high cervical region. Radiologic differentiation between dural contact and true invasion is often challenging.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 52-year-old female presented with posterior neck pain and a palpable upper cervical mass. The magnetic resonance demonstrated a 6 × 4 cm paraspinal lesion at the C1-C2 level with suspected dural involvement. Surgical exploration revealed a well-encapsulated tumor extending to the dura without true invasion; this allowed for gross total resect

BACKGROUND: Carcinoma of the ampulla of Vater is an uncommon ampullo-pancreatobiliary neoplasm, and the most common histological type is adenocarcinoma with a tubular growth pattern. Invasive micropapillary carcinoma (IMPC) is an aggressive variant of adenocarcinoma in several organs that is associated with lymph node metastasis and poor prognosis. IMPC was first described as a histological subtype of breast cancer; however, IMPC of the ampulla of Vater is extremely rare, with only three articles reported in the English literature.
CASE SUMMARY: We have reported a case of IMPC of the ampulla

Intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN) is the most common cystic neoplasm of the pancreas, encompassing a spectrum from benign to malignant lesions. Recently, the international guidelines for IPMN management were revised as the Kyoto guidelines, emphasizing the critical role of imaging in diagnosis, risk assessment, and surveillance. This article provides a comprehensive review of IPMN based on the updated guidelines, focusing on imaging-related aspects while elucidating the underlying pathological background. We present the three interrelated classification systems for IPMN: anatomica

Intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMNs) are mucin-secreting cystic neoplasm of pancreas. They have a malignant potential. They are usually localised to the pancreas but occasionally can involve surrounding structures (1.9%-6.6%), like bile duct and duodenum, and are labelled as IPMN with invasion. Jaundice as a manifestation of IPMN is not common (4.5%). It can present as jaundice as a result of invasion of common bile duct (CBD) resulting in stricture formation or uncommonly as a result of fistulising to CBD with resultant obstruction of CBD by thick mucin secreted by this tumour. Inflammatory fibroid polyps (IFPs) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms affecting the gastrointestinal tract which are considered benign and noninvasive. We present a case of an invasive IFP in a 46-year-old woman who presented with signs of intestinal obstruction due to ileal intussusception. A segment of the small intestine was resected and subsequently intestinal continuity was restored. A polypoid lesion was found obstructing the lumen. Histopathology revealed a mesenchymal proliferation of spindle and stellate cells, without cytological atypia, arranged in a fibromyxoid stroma. The tumor cells

Metastatic neuroendocrine neoplasms to the breast are rare and histopathologic overlap with mammary carcinomas has led to misdiagnosis. We present a case of a middle-aged woman with diplopia and a right medial rectus mass. Metastatic breast cancer was initially suspected based on a history of invasive ductal carcinoma. Detailed immunohistochemistry of the orbital biopsy, gallium-68 dotatate positron emission tomography-CT, and reevaluation of her prior breast specimen, demonstrated that her initial breast carcinoma diagnosis was in error and she was ultimately diagnosed with a previously unkno

Herpes simplex virus (HSV) and human papillomavirus (HPV) sequences were analyzed in tumors of the female lower genital tract, by probing DNA from 13 intraepithelial and 30 invasive neoplastic lesions with radiolabelled HPV-16 and HPV-18 DNA as well as cloned fragments of HSV-2 DNA. Careful removal of stromal tissue from the pathological specimens allowed authentic tumor DNA to be processed. Normal genital tissue obtained from the patients and genital condylomata were included as internal controls. The presence of HPV-16 or 18 DNA was detected in 12/13 (92.3%) intraepithelial neoplasms and in

Solid pseudopapillary neoplasms of the pancreas are low-grade malignancies, but their biological behavior cannot be stratified solely on the basis of histopathologic criteria. Aside from mutations in beta-catenin and lack of genetic changes common to pancreatic ductal adenocarcinomas, little is known about the chromosomal alterations in solid pseudopapillary neoplasms. We applied array comparative genomic hybridization to a series of 12 patients. The average age was 31 years (range 12-52 years) with 10 female and 2 male patients. The average tumor size was 7.3 cm (range 2-24 cm) with five lesi
