Acute phase proteins increase with sarcoptic mange status and severity in Iberian ibex (Capra pyrenaica, Schinz 1838).

Sarcoptic mange is a contagious skin disease caused by Sarcoptes scabiei, affecting both domestic and wild mammals, including the Iberian ibex (Capra pyrenaica), a medium-sized mountain ungulate almost endemic to the Iberian Peninsula. Acute phase proteins (APPs) could be an indicator of sarcoptic mange disease and severity in Iberian ibex. Serum samples from 131 healthy and sarcoptic mange-affected Iberian ibexes were collected from 2005 to 2012 in Sierra Nevada Natural Space in southern Spain. Serum alpha-1-acid glycoprotein (AGP), serum amyloid A (SAA) and haptoglobin (Hp) concentrations we

Causes of isolated recurrent ipsilateral sixth nerve palsies in older adults: a case series and review of the literature.

PURPOSE: The etiology of recurrent isolated sixth nerve palsies in older adults has not been well described in the literature. Sixth nerve palsies presenting with a chronic, relapsing, and remitting course are uncommon, but can herald a diagnosis of high morbidity and mortality in the older population. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Our method was a retrospective case series study. A review of clinical records of 782 patients ≥50 years of age diagnosed with recurrent sixth nerve palsies was performed over a 10-year period from 1995-2005 in a neuro-ophthalmology clinic in Reno, Nevada. A review of the

Childhood trauma and risk for past and future suicide attempts among women in prison.

PURPOSE: We sought to determine whether childhood trauma is an independent risk factor for past suicide attempts and the future likelihood of attempts among women in prison. METHODS: A random sample of 247 women incarcerated in a state prison in Las Vegas, Nevada, completed a confidential interview that included the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, the 18-item Brief Symptom Inventory, standard measures of illicit drug use, and the revised Suicidal Behaviors Questionnaire. Multiple logistic regression models were developed to evaluate the independent influence of cumulative childhood trauma on

Reconstructing the spread of Dirofilaria immitis in California coyotes.

Dirofilaria immitis is a filarial nematode parasite that is currently widely enzootic in dog and coyote (Canis latrans) populations of California. Weak historical evidence suggests that the initial focus of D. immitis in California occurred 3 decades ago in the Sierra Nevada foothills (SNF) and spread to other parts of California thereafter. However, this hypothesis is difficult to evaluate because of the lack of epidemiological studies on heartworm in California before 1970. We investigated this hypothesis by comparing D. immitis prevalence in coyotes between initial (1975-1985) and current (

[Protection of the thyroid in children and fetuses in case of nuclear accident].

The administration of stable iodine in order to keep the thyroid gland away from radioactive iodine isotope contamination has long been regarded with caution by the health authorities, mainly because of the potential toxicity of iodine in newborns, young children and adults with thyroid pathology. Therefore, the risk of oral stable iodine given for a limited period of time must be compared to the risk of cancer due to radioactive exposure. The analysis of complications following the nuclear accidents of Marshall Islands in 1954 and Tchernobyl in 1986 has shown that newborn infants and young ch

Seasonal occurrence of infective nematode larvae in California high Sierra pastures grazed by cattle.

Worm-free Holstein calves were used to assess the seasonal variation in numbers of nematode infective larvae on herbage at 2 commercial cow-calf ranches in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Both ranches used Herefords as their basic breed. One ranch near Sattley, California, is at an elevation of approximately 1,500 m above sea level, whereas the study area on the 2nd ranch near Susanville is at an elevation of approximately 1,250 m above sea level. Worm-free tracer calves were allowed to graze for approximately 30 days and were then kept free of further nematode infection until euthanasia and necr

De-prescribing opioids among Medicaid patients with long-term opioid use.

BACKGROUND: Guidelines encourage deprescribing opioids for long-term opioid patients, especially those using opioids and benzodiazepines, z-drugs, or muscle relaxants ("other respiratory depressants"). OBJECTIVE: Were long-term opioid patients who were prescribed other respiratory depressants more likely to have deprescribing opioid trajectories? DESIGN: Cross-sectional retrospective study using pharmacy and professional claims from 2015 to 2019. Adjusted logistic regression models were stratified on low (<50 morphine milligram equivalents; MME) and high (>50 MME) starting opioid doses. We r

Resurgence of acute rheumatic fever in the intermountain area of the United States.

We describe an outbreak of acute rheumatic fever that occurred in the intermountain area centered in Salt Lake City, Utah. Seventy-four children meeting the modified Jones criteria for the diagnosis of acute rheumatic fever were evaluated by the staff at Primary Children's Medical Center, Salt Lake City, from January 1985 through June 1986. This represents an eightfold increase over the average annual incidence at this hospital during the past decade. Carditis, a dominant feature of the outbreak, was confirmed by auscultation in 53 of the patients (72 percent). An additional 14 patients were f

Molecular and niche modeling approaches to identify potential amplifying hosts for an emerging tick-borne pathogen, Rickettsia rickettsii subsp. californica, the causative agent of Pacific Coast tick fever.

Pacific Coast tick fever is a recently described zoonotic disease in California caused by a spotted fever group rickettsia, Rickettsia rickettsii subsp. californica (formerly Rickettsia 364D) and transmitted by the Pacific Coast tick, Dermacentor occidentalis. Like many emerging vector-borne diseases, knowledge regarding the transmission cycle, contribution from potential amplifying hosts, and geographic distribution of R. rickettsii californica is limited. We paired molecular analysis with comparative spatial niche modeling to identify vertebrate hosts potentially involved in the transmission

Associations between Circumstances Surrounding Overdose and Underlying Classes of Polysubstance Overdose Deaths.

BACKGROUND: The overdose crisis is worsening, with polysubstance overdose deaths involving psychostimulants increasing in the U.S. Substance-specific prevention and intervention activities may not be as effective for polysubstance use, so we sought to classify substances used among overdose decedents to identify unique factors related to these classes. METHODS: We used data from the Nevada State Unintentional Drug Overdose Reporting System, Jan 2019-Jun 2021, which comes from death certificates, coroner/medical examiner reports, and postmortem toxicology. Adverse childhood experiences, antenatal stressful life events, and marijuana use during pregnancy: A population-based study.

Cumulative exposure to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and antenatal stressful life events (ASLEs) are independently associated with marijuana use during pregnancy. However, research has not explored how both exposures may influence marijuana use jointly. Assessing the joint associations of ACEs and recent ASLEs on marijuana use can identify people who may benefit from early intervention. Data come from the Nevada Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System, 2017-2020 (N = 2483). We assessed eight measures of ACEs before age 18 and fourteen measures of ASLEs twelve months before giving bi

Detection and Isolation of Rickettsia tillamookensis (Rickettsiales: Rickettsiaceae) From Ixodes pacificus (Acari: Ixodidae) From Multiple Regions of California.

The western black-legged tick (Ixodes pacificus) is the most frequently identified human-biting tick species in the western United States and the principal vector of at least three recognized bacterial pathogens of humans. A potentially pathogenic Rickettsia species, first described in 1978 and recently characterized as a novel transitional group agent designated as Rickettsia tillamookensis, also exists among populations of I. pacificus, although the distribution and frequency of this agent are poorly known. We evaluated DNA extracts from 348 host-seeking I. pacificus nymphs collected from 9

Pathogen reduction by ozone-biological activated carbon-based advanced water reclamation for reuse.

Ozone-biological activated carbon (ozone-BAC)-based technologies are emerging as an appealing option for potable reuse systems; however, uncertainty remains regarding the reduction of waterborne pathogens. Common log reduction requirements have been modeled after California Department of Drinking Water's 12-10-10 log reduction value (LRV) for enteric virus, Cryptosporidium, and Giardia, respectively. The objective of this research was to investigate appropriate LRVs of pathogens that can be achieved in ozone-BAC-based treatment systems and to assess the applicability of employing drinking wate

Pulmonary tuberculosis presenting as an enlarging left lower lobe mass-like lesion mimicking malignancy.

Pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) classically involves upper lobes in reactivation disease, but it can rarely present as a mass-like consolidation that closely mimics lung malignancy. A 59-year-old man born in the Philippines and living in Nevada with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes mellitus (HbA1c 9.8%) and COPD was found to have an incidental 4.0 × 3.0 cm left lower lobe (LLL) mass-like lesion with mildly enlarged lymph nodes. An interferon-gamma release assay (IGRA; QuantiFERON-TB Gold Plus) was negative. Initial bronchoscopy with bronchial washings was negative for acid-fast bacilli (AFB) cult

Seronegativity of Iberian ibex (Capra pyrenaica) against Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum is consistent with eco-epidemiological and environmental features in Mediterranean mountainous areas.

Knowledge of pathogen epidemiological dynamics and habitat ecological features is essential for wildlife population and health monitoring and management. Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum are two broadly distributed multi-host parasites that affect both wild and domestic animals and, in the case of T. gondii, cause zoonosis. This study reports the seroprevalence of both parasites in Iberian ibex (Capra pyrenaica), a mountain wild ruminant native to the Iberian Peninsula, from the Natural Space of Sierra Nevada (NSSN) in southeastern Spain. Serum from 146 Iberian ibexes were analysed using
